In this video Heimler discusses the Columbian Exchange between Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
By definition, the Columbian Exchange was the transfer of animals, food, minerals, disease, and people between Afro-Eurasia and the Americas.
The exchange itself fundamentally transformed all societies in which it took place. One of the more significant exchanges was disease, most notably, smallpox. When Spanish conquistadors first introduced smallpox and other diseases to the natives of the Americas, their population was decimated, and therefore they became a relatively easy target for further European conquest.

@@brand-off3806 yeah i heard from some of my friends who took the 2023 apush exam that it was weird asf, my friend who is like the most history-oriented student i've ever met got a 4 😭😭
i'm 4 days out so we're trying for 2 units a day (I'll forget)
@@connorisbored3834 then apparently the 2024 exam was pretty easy
Our teacher just gives us the textbook and a reading guide, and we are expected to learn the rest on our own, after each unit she reviews the lesson with us, but these videos are really helpful in order to summarize the whole of a unit but remember the important terms. Thank you Mr.Heimler's your videos are really helpful!
School starts tomorrow and I can't wait for these to carry me in history again :)

I have been having trouble studying on my own with AP world, because the note slides our teachers give us is just measly bullets... you actually go into detail and explain, which is SO beneficial for my notes and for me to review over. Thank you so much
whatd u get on the exam? also, i kindof wish i had teachers like that cuz i learn w my own flashcards and its easy to make flashcards that are just the bullets then for more detail to google and make extrra cards from that

I would like to add one more aspect of the Exchange, intellectual ideas. Perhaps the most lasting was the concept of "The Noble Savage" which is a mainstay in American and European literature well into the 20th century. Voltaire's Candide is a good example of this concept.

Great video, but, I know you will be talking about the slave trade which is important. Although, isn't also possible to introduce the "encomienda" system of slavery. I read the course description and even though it is not DIRECTLY mentioned as a term, it does lead towards GENERAL description as to why slavery was necessary. So the encomienda system was to try to enslave native americans to cash crop, and mineral based economies/industries. But, because of the dying off of said people due to small pox, whooping cough, mumps etc. OTHERS had to be replaced. This may be a minor detail, but it will help further explain the slave trade system because it was tried in the Americas with its native people, but had to be imported.
This also may be important when you get to indentured servitude and penal colonies when the first charters were set up in the Americas.

@@heimlershistory Hey one more question, I notice there was no mention of the Caribs / Kalinagos who were the dominate but more aggressive and warlike native groups. The European interaction with them would have been different from the Taino who were gentle, peaceful and kind.
