In this video Heimler explains how the Spanish created new labor systems in the Americas.
The Spanish encomienda system (made legal by the requerimiento) created a system of coerced labor in which leading men, or encomenderos, were granted a portion of land in the Americas on which to farm and mine. In order to do said farming and mining, Native Americans located on that land were forced to take up the labor.
But because the natives kept dying from disease and escaping, the Spanish introduced African slavery to the Americas.
Additionally, the Spanish completely reordered American society by introducing a caste system (or Casta System) to their colonial holdings. A person's position in the system was based on his or her racial ancestry.
If you have any questions, leave them below and Heimler shall answer forthwithly.

Heimler's History thank you!
Me with an APUSH test tomorrow speed running all the videos…
This is really useful. I've recently discovered that a lot of Spanish people are unaware of this, or at least appear to. Those that I've come across believe in this narrative that Spain only conquered South America out of a desire to save the South Americans from themselves and gently convert them to Christianity and protect them. They really like to compare themselves to the US and Britain whom they see as evil usurpers who, unlike them, purposefully committed genocide on the natives. It's a weird experience to be accused of having an "Anglosphere bias" when you agree that Britain, the US and other Europeans did horrible things to indigenous people both by design and by callousness but suggest that Spain did the same.
Spain did the same...
"Frémont's interest in transferring legal title from California Indians to the new state built on his understanding that, under Spanish law, the seizure of Indian lands amounted to illegal invasion by force. He sought to extinguish California Indian title altogether. The day after he introduced his ten land bills, Frémont told fellow senators: "The Spanish law clearly and absolutely secured to Indians fixed rights of property in the lands they occupy, beyond what is admitted by this Government in its relations with its own domestic tribes." Consequently, "Some particular provision will be necessary to divest them of these rights.""
From "An american genocide. The United States and the Californian Indian catastrophe.", Benjamin Madley. Yale University Press.
I did learn about that in Sunday school. I think
Studying the summer before I take Apush lol

Mr. Heimler, what text book do you use for your course?
APUSH CED
What exactly is the "protection of the crown"? Anyone can answer...pls
Like government backed protection, as in anyone who harmed the natives protected under the authority of the Crown would be (theoretically) subject to punishment as a criminal, and more to the point, anyone who was NOT protected was free game to be subjugated.
Like, I know I’m too late. But you deserved an answer, man
We miss you
Don't you freaking dare touch my brain cows Mr. Heimler.
Does topics like the Middle Passage and the Triangular trade included in Unit 1 Topic 5? Or is it included in Topic 4 (Columbian Exchange)?
In can fit in either, but we'll talk more about it in Unit 2
Plz hurry we have our chapter 2 quiz on Friday most teachers aren’t spending much time on each chapter!!!
No way... dang... y'all are fast!
I know and he already has a chapter 3 quiz planned for Tuesday 👁👄👁
Katie Gold i have my unit one test today
What about us sophomores that have euro this year?
Oh man, I wish I could make those too, but APUSH has me covered up. Not that it’ll help, but I’ll be making Euro videos next year...
@3:04
2 days until apush exam and here i am.
...so?
how'd it go?
I LOVE YOU
are ap exams going to be shortened again
Probably not, but we'll definitely not know till much later
There's actually a petition going around to try and bring attention to let the college board modify Ap exams for this year. In case you want to sign, chng.it/dVv7Zty64b
What happened to the Indians and African mixes they did mix
Not sure if your gonna see this, but aren't Africans below Native Americans in the Caste System? In your notes packet, it says Africans are on the bottom and it says the same in AMSCO. Just wanted to make sure.
He also forgot to talk about the castizo which is above mestizo.
The caste system was never a thing nor an institution, the crown approved and promoted mixed marriages since 1512, the first marriage in what is now US territory was between a spaniard and a black woman
is it caste or casta system? @heimler's history
I think it's a caste system called casta. Caste was from South Asia and Casta was from the Americas.

Heimler's History that just made my day
Ha, glad to do it...
Chicago Gangs.
Talking about slavery and only focusing on the very few years of the encomienda doesn’t feel honest. What about the leyes de Burgos? What about the imposition of the British to buy slaves from them? What about the 8 hour working days and other laws that the Consejo de Indias passed? Why were the American slaves fleeing to Florida?
I thought afriacans were enslaved due to ideologies like social darwinism and white man's burden
Those ideas are more tied to imperialism...
In the early years of the spanish conolization Bartolome de las Casas the biggest figure in terms of defending the rights and humanity of natives proposed to use african slaves instead of natives, when he found out that how europeans were buying the slaves and the conditions they were submitted to, he went back on his words and started defending the africans as well
Honestly, this as bad as expected
The Caste system didn't exist
Most Blacks were the Native Americans!!
bro helped me get a 5 on my whap 😘
Got a 5 on my ap world test thanks to your unit reviews that you did over the week of the test. Wouldn't have passed without you. Now we grinding US🦾🦾🦾🦾🦾🦾
