      Just started wanting one of these, yesterday lol. Reason being, after being a Fender diehard my whole 18 years of playing, knowing the story of Fender, after getting my first Squier and reading about the history(I was 9). Leo has been my hero since. To me, he is the Nikola Tesla of music. I learned yesterday, after somehow not knowing this before, that he was a silent partner in Music Man, even when it was under a different name, because of the Non-compete CBS made him sign. So he basically said 'Fuck the man' and secretly created this bass. Became president of music man after the non compete ended. That has only made me love Leo more lol. And these basses are fucking awesome. The look, tone and versatility are so cool. Just figuring out where I want to start with them haha. I am a big fan and believer of Squiers, during the last 2 years, as they are very much an equivalent of base model Fenders. It seems as tho Fender is experimenting with marketing research, seeing how much more people will pay for an equivalent product with only a brand stamp being the difference haha. Sterling seems to be improving drastically in quality as well, from my research.

    I love that bass !!! / You know what - the top finish on these basses has a kind of "Fogged or mist" type of look. Not complaining for the price mind you. But I would take this bass to someone who could get a real nice shine out of this top wood. Yeah Yeah I know. "Well what are you gonna do - look at it - or play it ?" - I've heard this line a Billion times. This "Trans Satin Black" top is REALLY cool. (IMO). May as well do it justice...

    Having long since sold off my herd of pre-Ernie Ball Stingrays and playing mostly finger picking acoustic guitar, I miss the heft and feel of the Stingray when I pick up an Ibanez. When I pick up a bass, I want to enjoy playing it as much as possible without breaking the bank since I'm no longer playing professionally. Your review answered all of the questions I had and prompted me to pull the trigger on a Ray34 natural with the swamp ash body, hoping for as much weight as I can get, I like a heavy bass. And hell, today's my birthday! After watching videos of people slapping, tapping, and soloing, it's nice to see someone actually just play the freaking bass! This coming from someone who has been playing for over 45 years and highly influenced, in style and technique, by seeing Geezer Butler from the 14th row on the floor in 1978 (with Van Halen opening up). Thank you!

    Lately if you can find a good one, you’re lucky. The quality control and “US” setup has gone to crap. I’ve gone through several of these with stripped out tuning gears, big cracks in the finish, and the necks arrive with the truss rod jacked so tight you can’t move it.

But I’m getting the Natural Stain ASH Wood version!..and maybe just upgrade the Pick Up/..or not,..it may just need to be re-configured in Parallel not Single!! (..ands maybe a cheap Power upgrade: 9vlts🔋 to 18vlts…huh!?) Since you were interested in this one ,..you’Ve gotta check out the Roasted Maple/Natural Stain as well ‘cause it’s Purrrdy yawl ✨🎸🤘🏾🤣

    I bought a Sterling SUB5, so the "one step below" the one in the video, and I can't play that thing. The frets are so sharp, they literally cut my fingers. When I play just a few notes on that thing, I have deep visible cuts on my fingers. Not to flesh, but still. Also, the humbucker is intentionally not the regular Stingray format, so that you can't easily replace them. Piece of shit that I wish I hadn't purchased. So I have a hard time believing that any other Sterling branded instrument could be better than that piece of shit I have.

    • @spoonerluv
      @spoonerluv Před 9 měsíci

      Yeah unfortunately I think Sterling is a big fumble. On the guitar front, most of the tremolos have such bad QC that they won't even return to pitch. I'd be willing to pay a bit more money for higher quality, but it seems it just isn't their priority.

    • @PoltergeistWorks
      @PoltergeistWorks Před 4 lety +5

      This is normal, if you want low action and hit the string hard what do you expect ? Listen to some of the metal and progressive recordings - this is actually what makes the bass break through in the mix more. You can raise the action and play softer and you will not get it, it's not the fault of the instrument.
