I really liked this! I love to read and write and am an aspiring novelist. I'm in middle school and I have been writing since third grade, I've written about 36 pages or something of one of my stories and just started a new one! I also love to read books like Less Than Zero, The Outsiders and That Was Then, This Is Now and A Separate Peace. Thanks for this video! I hope to write a book one day!

I lived without electricity for a year, having sank everything into our new house and the company wouldn't turn it on because the pole was outdated. I found a manual typewriter at the salvation army and finished my first story on it. Electronics can be distracting.

    • @ushmals
      @ushmals Před 6 lety +6

LPSCarolineProductions one tip i have is to research your genre. for example the novel im writing is a dystopian one, and so I researched the perfect way to write a dystopian novel without adding cliches and all. And it was very helpful and the website i used even gave me a list of books to read to get an idea on how to write the rebellion part of my novel. The books they gave were kind if old and i didnt rlly want to read them so instead i did some of my own research and using my on bookworm knowledge i came up with a great list of books that I actually want to read and are very helpful during my writing process

I found your channel on the recommended videos and since I'm about to start this channel for writers I really want to network with other writers as much as possible.
I really like this video for a few reasons. First, I am a firm believer in the potential of young writers. It's one of the things my publishing house is founded on. And second because you actually went out of your way to make an almost 20 minute video directed towards new and young writers and did a GOOD job with what you covered.

Hi, I really appreciate all of your writing tips videos, and especially this one! You give some fantastic and very helpful tips in this video as well as your others. I have one very random, and quite frankly, novice question. What is the approximate number of words in an average 350 page novel? I've researched it, but I keep getting answers like, "Anything over 50,000 words is the average number of words in a young adult or adult novel." That answer is great, but I'm trying to get a view in my head of a 350 page novel and about how many words are in it.

      Hi Lulu,
So it does depend on the formatting size, but I can tell you that my book at 70,000 words formatted in paperback 5.25 x 8" (which is pretty much the standard size), is equal to 350 pages. Hope that helps!

Hi Kristen, I love your videos you are a good help and inspiration for me move forward to reach my dream/goals. I want to put in hard work to do that, I can only focus and do it right when I'm alone . how do I keep up when I have family and friends around me wanting to communicate? it's like i have to shut them out to in order to succeed. is that bad of me? do you know of a possible way I can do both?

      Hi Devon,
This is a great question! I've had this problem in the past as well. In order to stay focused, I would recommend creating a writing schedule or designated writing time. I would also choose a place free of distractions to write. Tell your family and friends about this designated writing time, shut off your phone, turn the wi-fi off on your laptop and go to you writing space. If your family and friends know how important your writing time is to you, then they should have no problem respecting it. Hope that helps!

I am not sure when my books will be available in other languages, but I know there are some great free apps like Duolingo where you can take foreign language lessons for free :)

Where do you find a mentor and do you have to pay them?

I think that if you have to pay them then they are your teacher. Mentor to me is more like someone who sees the potential in you and takes you under his/her wing.

Mika is right - mentors are people that offer their time for free to help you with your writing craft. Teachers or professors or even relatives and friends of relatives can be great mentors.

This one time I was starting a book, and I was writing at recess, and a girl came up and asked me how far I was, so I told her that I have gotten to, I think it was 4 pages, and so she went, "What?! you cant have a story that's only 4 pages!!" I got really annoyed with her because I obviously wasn't done with my story XD.

Thanks for the video. The only problem I have is that I don't know anyone who would be a good beta reader, and I don't think that I should find one online. I'm still young and I don't think it would be safe. Kind of stuck in a pickle. 😕

Hmm, that can be tough. Wattpad may be a good option for you, although it is online. It's more of a online community than picking some random person to beta read for you. Hope that helps!

Do not read everything. Poorly written fiction will not help you in any way, and can actually make things worse.
