How To Use The Greenworks Electric Dethatcher | Worth Every Penny

  • In this video I use the Greenworks electric dethatcher on my St. Augustine grass. I have been using my neighbor's dethatcher for about 2 years, and I finally got my own. Well actually I found it on the curb on trash nights. For being an electric lawn tool, i highly recommend it for pretty much any yard as long as you are willing to go back after the fact and rake up the thatch and bag it. For the retail price of $130 or so, i think its pretty good for a tool you will use once a year. You shouldn't pull the dethatcher in the reverse direction as it can mess up your grass, and potentially break the dethatcher. This is one of the coolest things i have found in the trash. Most of the things I find are sold pretty quickly, some items like this dethatcher I keep instead.

      Nice! Yea it should be ok. Even the "scalping" doesn't take the roots away. It'll be ok.

    Don’t use a rake at the end! Just mow and bag it!

      So are you saying you dethach first, then mow?

    Use mulching blades and bag it at the end if you’re worried about not getting all of it. That will make the residual small enough to be good food for the lawn.

    This is the only video I could find someone doing this to st augustine. My lawn is very thick with thatch. Did you have any issues after using this tool?

    • @ForeMoney
      @ForeMoney  Před 2 lety +2

      no issues. St. Augustine is very durable. just make sure you dont scalp the yard. some thatch is good, just dont go too deep...

    How did you fix the clip behind the start button? I've got the same problem with mine, pulled it out after a year of non-use and I can't get it to start. So I opened up the handle and found that the clip was broken. Called Greenworks but they said I will have to replace the entire top handle.

    • @ForeMoney
      @ForeMoney  Před rokem

      mine was a simple fix because the wire was loose. I opened up the little housing where the button is and it was obvious. Yours might be a little trickier. Should be an easy fix if it was stored properly. I will say these are super durable for some reason. I left mine outdoors, not covered, no protection from any elements. I just used it this weekend for 3 different yards. no issues. try to open it up and make sure everything is connected. if not, the motor might be fried.

    How many times do you go over your lawn with the dethatcher? Once? Twice?

    • @ForeMoney
      @ForeMoney  Před 9 měsíci

      twice at most. just keep an eye and dont scalp it. really depends how low the tines are when you set it.

    Hi - We ruin our lawn today using it. ☹️😫 I think my son raked the lawn as I see the soil… How can we fix it? 😔

    • @ForeMoney
      @ForeMoney  Před rokem +1

      First things first is to water it a lot. Don't let it dry out. If you have some of the clippings left, maybe spread them around. This will act a shade to the soil. It like thatch, and grass needs some thatch to stay shaded from the sun. Most grass is pretty resilient even if he scalped it. A lot of people will scalp the grass on purpose, but this is during the early growing season, not middle of summer. Right now it needs a lot of water. It should grow back. Maybe a little bit of fertilizer with potassium to help root growth. But more than anything you need a lot of water. Don't walk on it too much either. Water water water!!!! Keep me posted!

    Can you run the lawnmower over it after to pick the grass up?

    • @ForeMoney
      @ForeMoney  Před rokem +2

      Yes but it won't collect all of them. Some of the clippings are a little buried under the grass. Now if you rake it first you can probably run the mower over the piles of clippings if you have a mulch bag on the mower. But just mowing right after you thatch and hoping you can collect the clippings, maybe won't work too well but it will collect some... give it a shot.

      @@gradyrogers6707 Good! Now water it a lot and fertilize accordingly. I would say next step is to aerate, but i understand thats not always feasible for everyone.
