  • Sunjoe Dethatcher and scarified | Do electric dethatchers really work? Do electric detacher’s really work? Could they be as powerful as gas dethatchers?
    In this video I take the sunjoe dethather to my very thick lawn, did it work? The electric SunJoe has to have to have an extension cord to be able to run. It it is not battery or gas powered. it comes with two modes a detaching mode and a scarifying mode.
    I will be answering these common questions:
    How do you use a sunjoe detacher
    How often should you Dethatch
    How do you revive your lawn after you dethatch it
    Is removing dead grass from the lawn good
    Do you need to remove dead before over seeding
    Should you dethach before overseeding
    Should I cut my lawn before I dethach
    Can you dethach a wet lawn
    Do you need to dethatch a lawn
    Here is the link to the SunJoe electric Scarifier and Dethatcher:

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  Před 3 lety

      @@roba168 hey Rob, so the dethatching is not done on zones, it’s done by grass type, cool season or warm season grass. So if you have rye, Kentucky blue, fescue, you have a cool season lawn and you Dethatch in spring. If you have Bermuda, st Augustine, centipede, zoysia, or Bahia are warm season lawns and should be Dethatcher late spring early summer as it begins to actively grow.
      There are varying thoughts on dethatch some of these grass types, feel free to ask about your specific one.

    I just finished using this thing twice on my lawn. Amazing how much this pulls up. I quickly figured out that holding the back flap open maybe a third of the way with some bungee cords made the clumping problems vanish. Makes is much easier to push along.

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  Před 3 lety

      Jamie, thanks for the comment. It really is a beast isn’t it. Crazy how a cheap flimsy piece of plastic can do soo much!
      Don’t take this as a slam (as it’s not), I just don’t see it as an issue at all. This whole video was shot on -10 setting (max lowest), 2 settings below the recommended 0 setting, and it was my wife pushing the machine. As you can see, outside recommended settings and a lady using it, super thick lawn. it didn’t have any issues. I think people really over think this aspect and make it a bigger issue then it really is.
      As the tines grab and pull, this machine actually semi pulls it’s self along(but this could be because I’m have it slammed soooo low out side of recommended settings lol).
      But with that said, your on to something there, just be cautious of debris, it can get ahold of it and shoot it at your legs if it’s open like that. I know people who have sent rocks through then bag. 😳

    • @JamieWardHD
      @JamieWardHD Před 3 lety +1

      @@TheGreenerLawn Good point about not opening up the flap too much. Debris can definitely fly out the back of that sucker. And fast! Good idea to do this with long pants on perhaps.
      I also had it on the lowest setting. This may have been a mistake for the first time use since my lawn had never been dethatched before. So I may have been pulling up too much material in one pass. I think that made the machine a bit harder to push with the flap down and trapping so much material inside the unit. After the first cleanup, I did a second pass. With that pass, I raised the unit one notch and held the flap open a bit with the bungee cords. The discharge was much more even than the first pass. Not nearly as many clumps since the material wasn't getting trapped inside the machine then dumped out all at once.
      One thing to consider with running the unit with the flap partially open is that the motor will probably be working with less stress. With less material inside the unit flying around the tines, the motor can work easier. I can see this extending the life of the product as well as keeping the unit and your extension cord running cooler.

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  Před 3 lety

      @@JamieWardHD 💯 spot on! I see the motor
      Heat being a prob for sure and in that case; releasing effort /debris is a spot on move! 💯🔥

    I get better results with mine after I cutted1 1/2" off the front lip so that it does not dig in the ground all the time, block the rear door partially open( to let the dead grass out easier) and use not the racking tool but the scarificator.
    The scarificator blades add the advantage of creating "groves" in the soil for the fertilizer or seeds to lodge in.
    I use mine once in the spring ( I just did it yesterday) and once in the fall.
    Do it twice at 90 degrees from each other.
    I use my lawn mover to pick up the dead grass.

    • @TheGreenerLawn

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  Před 4 lety +5

      All lawns are different. It depends on Care, watering, feeding, environmental, etc. Some, you are very correct, they will need a dethatch bump often, and some others never need it.
      My lawn struggled from last year having the wettest spring on record for Utah. It drew all my roots up, causing a lot of drying out issues, causing more dead grass then normal for my lawn. So, that is 1/2 the reason I Dethatcher. The other reason was for a lawn leveling I really need, I didn’t want thatch under a bunch of sand.

    Newbie seeking advice from anyone!! Thx for the video. Your yard is nice to start with. I have a bumpy yard with creeping charlie and bellflower starting to take over in some spots. My plan was to use this, then seed and fertilize with Milogranite. Now I'm wondering if I scrape it through the weeds, will I spread it to the rest of the yard. Thank you.

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  Před 3 lety +1

      I’d the weeds are not actively seeding, then no, you could alway use a herbicide first on your lawn let the weeds die back then start your process (draw back here is they herbicides will give you a time frame till you can seed, there is one tho that works!)
      But using the Dethatcher and then the Scarifier for the seed to have good seed to soil contact. You will be in the right direction.
