I just received my Sun Joe dethatcher/scarifier. Took it out for a few test strips immediately and I have to say⊠I am super impressed. Big thanks to you for the video, it helped with my decision. I was just about to go online and schedule a rental at my local big box store. Happy that I went online first though, now I have my own I can use any time without all of the rental hassle. The unit, as all of the videos point out, seemed a bit âcheap and flimsyâ when I unboxed it and I couldnât help but think, âhow good could this thing be.â My opinion changed immediately as soon as I turned in on and started making my first pass. Kudos to the Sun Joe company for making a great product at a great price.
You get pinned đ«¶đ» it!
I love my SunJoe Scarifier Dethatcher, I use it every season on my Minnesota lawn....the lawn is happy for the additional opportunity to "breathe".
They def open up and breathe soooo much better as stated! What itâs for!
I just ordered a 13" SunJoe and a heavy duty outdoor 100' extension cord from Amazon. Waiting anxiously for their arrival. Thank you for providing one of the best videos on the SunJoe machines and the de-thatching process. I live in western Washington and usually have the nicest looking lawn on my street.
Youâre welcome! Always glad to help! If you have thatch, the removal of your material in there is going to take you to the next level. With the stress of rain and possible fungusâs up there, this will help minimize the fungal issues and let it dry out inbetween rain storms! Awesome pick up, hands down!
Thank you Jeremy. I just bought an electric SunJoe scarifier-dethatcher from a box retailer, and needed to visually watch someone use it before scarifying my lawn today. It's good to know I purchased the right machine.
I understand this, 9 times outta 10 I love to watch the use b4 as well or see if itâs done correctly ⊠I get this đŻ
Excellent video. Thanks for answering the common questions.
Thank you!
I just purchased the 15â electric model and itâs outstanding. This is an excellent video and worth watching for any homeowner. Great job!
Thanks bob! I really liked that model đŻ it was my go to when the battery one was charging. It was beast!
Just did this to my yard today - first time power raking the yard in Spring. These things work.
Ohh ya!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video very informative.
Thanks for the feedback, itâs appreciated!
I have had mine for three years. Love it
They are beasts! Mines the neighborhood piece, everyone uses it.
Absolutely love mine. Next level!
I agree! đŻ
Jeremy showing off his B-ball skills while doing the unboxing. A little flick of the wrists. Good form. đđ
I could ball when I was younger, good catch lol
Very good video especially the Q and A section
Glad u found it helpful. Tied to condense all common questions in one video.
Iâm getting the 15â for next spring. I just threw some Kentucky Blue seed down on some patchy spots and here in Canada it takes a good 3-4 weeks to germinate. I donât want to dethatch until that seed has taken well. That seed takes forever to get any growth on it but once it does⊠itâs my favourite type of grass!
Kbg is my fave as well! Itâs so solid!!
good product review keep that lawn content cmn
Thank you! Iâll get it fixed!
Second year using mine. Works great. Now doing lawns for neighbors who hate raking.
lol I fall in that categoryâŠ. I hate raking! Lol such a flimsy, but solid machine! Lol
I purchased a SunJoe last year, I'm really happy with it.
Solid machine, right?
@@TheGreenerLawn Absolutely.
I just purchased mine; everyone here has me excited! Texas people have crappy lawnsâŠI plan to change that!
Get it done!!! đ
Hi Jeremy. Thanks for the video. Iâve been thinking about a battery one - donât want to mess with the cord.
Extra batteries and have a ball!
Great video man, thank you.
Glad to Assist!
just bought one on Bed Bath n Beyond Overstock on sale and with a 25% coupon from downloading the app. Got it for 126 shipped. I said wait when they more expensive.
Awesome find! đ„č
Things are just starting to green up here in Wisconsin. I used my cordless Sun Joe dethatcher this week for the first time on the highest setting just to use it like a rake. It worked really well. I put some some Scott's Turf Builder with Moss control down yesterday. I could already see the moss starting to turn a little black this morning. I was thinking maybe in a couple weeks I could go over the grass again with the dethatcher on the middle level to hopefully pull out some of the dead moss (depending on how much lawn growth I have at that time.) I'll use the scarifier attachment before I over-seed hopefully towards the end of May.
We've been getting a late start to spring here. It may be back down to the upper 30s this weekend, but by the next weekend it's supposed to be in the lower 70s.
Solid work.. couple talking points, iron helps kill moss and gives you a good green up. Over in England where moss is rampant they scarify, then iron (common way to alleviate moss). Worth the knowledge.
Your way better served to do a heavy dethatch b4 your overseed, opening little trenches every 3ish inches, isnât as good as open soil every where for seed to soil contactâŠ. UNLESS⊠your lawn is too thick and chocking itâs self out, the real reason to use a scarifier. And in this case, I hope your overseeing in a blend to address an issue.
Talking and thinking points ⊠but if you follow your steps I donât see how I could t have an amazing lawn đŻ
OK, thanks. I will keep that in mind. I plan to use the Scott's Thick R Lawn Sun and Shade over the entire lawn. It has the starter fertilizer and a soil improver in it. It has about 12% seed and the entire bag is 48lbs with everything together(a little less than 6lbs of seed.) In the areas that are shaded and thinner, I have a dense shade mix I plan to apply to those spots. I should also have some compost ready to do some top dressing. In addition, I did some pruning in the extra shady areas.
If I ever need one will look into sunjoe!
đŻ with while machine.
I've been thinking about an electric dethatcher for a while now. Manual raking after winter is tough (although I enjoy it after 4 months of no yard work). I feel like a tool like this would be very helpful. I think I'll be ordering the original 13 inch sun Joe today for $129 while they have them! Thank you for the resourceful video
Bro early worth every penny, and reviews do well on them. đđ»
@Eddy Edwards I got it. So freaking worth it I did a few neighbors lawns even
@Eddy Edwards allegedly some of these companies are trying to figure it out⊠Iâm skeptical cause of weight needed, but stay tuned lol⊠it would be crazy
I've watched 6 different videos on the SunJoe. Ordered one from Amazon today. I know I'll get use out of this machine. Between fixing my own yard and doing work for others, I'll make my money back.
đŻ! I have neighborhood kids doing it for cash around me lol. Smart move and well worth it!
When I first used mine my neighbor came over and asked me if I was vacuuming my lawn. Yes! It does sound like a vacuum
Crazy right? But works like a champ!
Very thorough explaining, great job with the video Jeremy! Iâd highly recommend the sunjoe to any level of diy lawncarer lol if thatâs a word ahahah
When it comes to amazing folks like yourself, you can say anything you want, and we accept it! Thank you as always brother! Howâs Canada?
Good tute đ
How Aussie to say of you đđŒđđŒđđŒ
Glad I saw this as I had just ordered the older model.
Any questions?
@@TheGreenerLawn Thank you, but not yet. They will arrive in a week's time. They sent both models as I didn't cancel the first order quick enough. I"ll post here if I have any questions. We have a newly sodded lawn, and half of it looks like it has died off already during the winter (they put it in in November over my objections to wait until spring). Dogs pee'd on parts of it that are totally dead. I am unsure if this will take out that dead grass, but I bought a rake that should work.
@@arcoins this will remove a good majority of debris, but will not clean up dead grass thatâs attached. If itâs not attached, it can help remove it. Dog pee spots, this is a super helpful way of doing it:

Yea, Let me know!
I have the martha stewart sunjoe edition I got it about two and half years ago fricking love it paid around 80. Buck new on Amazon
Solid!!! đđđ
#1 buy the extended guarantee !
#2 after you run it north / south mow up the thatch and now do it again going east/west ! you will easily remove a lot more thatch !
#3 now run the scarifier blade so that you can over seed if needed
My lawn has never looked better since I decided to buy one
Love all that you saidâŠ. Scarifier is optional once a dethatcher has been ran, the seed to soil contact is there. But will not hurt a thing, but honestly just extra work for minimal gains.
Iâve never checked
On their extended warranty. They have a 2 year reg warranty, how much is the warranty? I honestly have never looked. Iâve now bought two machines, and still have no clue oofâŠ. Both machines have been around my neighborhood and beyondâŠ. No issues on 2nd season and maybe 1-2 ish acres on eachâŠ.
Awesome review. Thank you. It looks like that front shroud was intentionally designed to jam into the ground and stop the unit from moving.
Honestly itâs not bad⊠sometimes it can be a bigger on dips, but over all not an issue
I have a St Augustine lawn. I had alot of dead material after a rare frost this winter. I got one of these hit my lawn hard. I know your not supposed to do it to St Aug but I've seen some guys in Australia do it to St Aug with great success. I pulled out 3 massive piles of debris from my backyard . Filled my Honda mower bag up 30 times over 3000 SQ ft. I'll be honest it looks bad now, real bad but I'm hopeful it will recover. Fingers crossed
I think you will rebound. For others who much try it, do it when itâs early summer for st aug, so it has a chance to recover after nailing it.
Thanks bro. I hit it with a bunch of Bio Stims, Stress Blend and some liquid KTS from Sunniland. Love the channel

What size guage extension cord do you need to keep from over heating?
12 gauge 51-100 ft. 14 gauge up to 50 ft. According to the manual.
Hey Jeremy, I use mine on everyone's lawn. I have never seen anyone say what the recommended extension cords are yet in a review. Read the manual, I believe they say 14 gauge for a 50 footer and a 12 gauge for a hundred-foot cord.
Yup follow the manuals recommendations. đŻ
Sounds like a vacuum but doesnât suck lol đ just ordered mine!! The rake can enjoy retirement đ
đŻ well said, you will see! Lol out with that rake, you can now leaf it alone!
Do you think I could use this on dirt? Like a tiller? I have a 10x40 area i need tilled and leveled to put seed in the fall.
The scarifier can go 1/4â into the soil. But thatâs max depth.
@@TheGreenerLawn thank you for responding. I will try it tmrw and see how it goes.
@@enzomoya1689 report back, let me know!
Hello, Before I buy one of these I'm hoping to ask if it will work for my purposes. Do you think the scarifier blades will do a good job of roughing up the top surface of the soil on bare patches of lawn? I need something that will kind of chop up the bare patches like a really shallow cultivating but not tear up the grass in the non-bare areas. Thanks in advance for your insights!
So it does dig the soil like 1/4 inch down, so yes, but it will remove grass plants in good grass in those rows. That is the true use, but as a low level cultivator is does work.
@@TheGreenerLawn Thanks so much! I ended up buying one and it works perfectly for scratching up the top 1/4 inch. I spread half the grass seed and fertilizer on, then scarify, then apply the other half, and roll it with a light weight turf roller to get good soil to seed contact. I apply in two halves to cover any spots that may have become bare from the movement of the scarifier. Thanks so much for your input!
@@tazocitrus đ any time!
I have a battery mower and it dies not pick up grass as good as my gas mower I got rid of. But it definitely is better than using the bagger that came with it. I got maybe a half a pass and the bag was full. I have a small lawn akso
Itâs crazy small and tooo tedious⊠I canât with it lol
I just got the battery powered one. Can't wait to try it. If you dethatch does that affect your pre emergent?
If your preemergent has not been watered in it can scoop it, but preemergent should be set with 1/2â water, if liquid, you will be fine, this is for granular. (Water both in tho, best practice, and correct way)
@@TheGreenerLawn yeah I use liquid and water it in but didn't know if it broke the barrier. Thanks
How much water did you give it?
@@TheGreenerLawn haha we still have 2 for of snow on the grass. I was just wondering for the future this spring. And I water it in with about 1/4" of water
Would it be ok to dethatch and scarify the lawn back to back?
Yep
Hopefully I'll be able to get this one day but my laen may be too big for it. Probably don't need to dethatch since my lawn is fairly new. Only a year old
Thatch happens from stress. Sometimes that stress and that build up can occur early, other lawns, never have an issue with it. Good cultural practices, water, mowing, low rate fertilization all play a key in this.
I donât think I remember how big your lawn was⊠remind me?!?
@@TheGreenerLawn Oh okay. Yea I've never really looked into this process of lawn care but I've heard a few people discuss it. I have a lil under 8000sq ft
@@datriseboyd667 how big my yard is, you just break it up a little or have a power lawn session lol. But over all a bridge to cross, if it ever becomes an issue.
I bought one of these units a year before last year and it cracked out on me last fall. I only used it 4 times on about 1800 ftÂČ
Itâs still under warranty reach out to the company theyâll take care of it.
Any worries when it comes to pop up sprinkler heads?
Nope itâs not tough enough, the scarifier might tho, so itâs always best to mark head placement with flags (or someway; paint, an object, etc.). My sprinklers here are all around the edges in corners so I know where to avoid.
so I bought the newest model and went to use it today and to my surprise on he highest setting it was destroying my lawn ! literally tearing chunks of grass and dirt off ! I thought maybe I had it on the lowest setting but I had it on the highest. Can't understand why tried it on different sections of the lawn with the same result. Needless to say its getting returned
Would you mind sending me pictures? Info@diygrasscare
To be honest, you really need to focus on your root health. If itâs coming up, that easily, you have some issues with your roots not the machine.
Also, what grass type do you have? Where are you located? which attachment did you use the scarifier or the de thatcher?
I added a Sideneck sticker to mines
Noice!

Great video but I'm a bit weirded out by how much the guy sounds like Ryan Reynolds. đ
Hilariously when Iâd train folks in past jobs, we had comment cards, and Iâd get Ryan or dead pool (also Ryan, but worth noting đ€Ł)
Well we just bought a used AJ801E and it will turn on for about 3 seconds and then it stops. We verified it wasn't the safety switch and after opening the top...we saw nothing burnt or broken. It is a mystery! We did verify with top off that motor and thatcher spins. It's a mystery! Only thing left was a small electronic board inside but I don't know what it does. So buy new. Don't buy used. The only good thing is we got it for $35.
Reach out to sun joe and see if they offer anything on the 2 year initial warranty. Some companies will go from manufacture date.
What level do you started first?? 10 or -10
Depends on issues you face and machine your using.
I have punished my SunJoe. It still keeps running. I did the "verticut" hack.
đ, this platic machine takes a licking and keeps ticking
Lawn Panda, where can I find the verticut hack?
@@Blubaugh5 Buy an additional verticut blade. Remove the spacers, cut them in half and then reinstall the old blades w/ the new blades from the new blade. Doubles your cutting.

I got the original, but my handle has nowhere near that amount of play.
I guess Iâm just a little loose. I honestly can tell you the others (as they are newer, and upgraded models) are way more studier built. Itâs not off to badly, the metal is bending, itâs not meant to be twisted like that lol. Itâs outside itâs normal use.

I don't get why you didn't use the bag, though
Cause it would fill up with less then one pass. It literally would be 20-40 bag changes. Not worth the time (sun joe knows this as well, but they donât have bigger collector options at this point).
@The Greener Lawn ok interesting. Doesn't look like it would fill up so fast but I guess makes sense
