Doc talks about dethatching lawns vs. verticutting lawns and which you should do. The majority of Bermuda and Zoysia lawns should never be dethatched. However when they start to get super thick, we can do something called verticutting. Dethatching pulls up too many runners in these lawns but the verticutter will slice and cut. I have bermuda grass and use the dethatcher attachment during my early spring scalp. That's the only time I use it. It speeds up the greening process by picking up all the dead, brown trash.
Hey Doc, we do things slightly different here in Australia on our Couch/Bermuda lawns.
First are our annual renovations - (scalping to bare soil, scarify to remove built up underground thatch, aerate, topdress 1-3 times to level).
Once our lawns have come back from renovation & have knitted up nicely, we spray with PGR monthly to maintain density & control/eliminate seed head, we mow with our cylinder mowers every day, or 2nd at the outside in at least 2-3 directions & ALWAYS with a catcher to collect all clippings (incredibly important in reducing disease occurrence). We crucially also groom every 2weeks. My separate cylinder mower with a grooming reel setup goes over the lawns in 2 directions every 2 weeks at around 2-3mm into the surface. This is crucial in keeping an incredibly fine surface. If you’re not familiar with grooming an Australian lawn, please Google to see how & why it’s done. All of my clients lawns are maintained year round at 12mm/0.5”.

bought a dethatcher last year after watching Silver Cymbal... guess I should toss it in the trash now since I'm in Texas and have bermuda! It took me too long to realize that he was up north, so unfortunately I also bought his grass seed recommendation and now have patches of clumping fescue in half my front yard :(

I dethatch my Bermuda when I do a scalp really early in the season to get all the clippings up. Doesn’t hurt the lawn at that point and allows the soil to get sun.
Too late, I already destroyed my lawn using the de thatching attachment.

What might be a great idea is to sharpen the scarifier blade so it can cut through the stolons easier and create a clean cut without ripping them up. The blade does kind of have a flat edge.
Make sure to use a larger gauge extension. It is easy to burn up the motor with a typical homeowner cord.

I normally do this every year to my bermuda, but I like to do it before applying my pre-emergent herbicide, so the verti-cut won’t affect the pre-emergent efficacy.
Great video Doc.. always wondered about dethaching bermuda.. I'm going into my first full year cutting at 1/2" daily.. My grass has gotten so thick it feels squshy when walking on it.
Question: what will happen if it gets too thick?

Another gadget? Well, I have been asking myself about verticutting my Bermuda lawn, but the next gadget I get is going to be the sweeper. I bought a special rake that has tines that look like a dethatcher, I'm using it to scratch out moss and dead spots, it does pull up some stolons, but once the moss is out and the ground is exposed, the bermudagrass moves right in.
Hey Doc, you have to try the Ryobi dethatcher, it’s a 2 x 18 volts unit so you get rid of the extension cord , it came two blade , same as the one you are using with your sunjoe
Last year, I purchased the Sun Joe, and I used the one with the needles, and I swear, I felt like I ruined my Bermuda grass. This year I used the other one to dethatch my burmuda, and after I was down, I used my lawn mower to pickup about 1 1/2 bags of old thatch. I am planning on seeding. I just have not found the right seed to buy.
Hey doc how much do you know about st Augustine grass, is it close Zoysia or Bermuda?
Between the 0, -5, and -10 setting, which one did you prefer if you were to do the entire lawn?
Sort of having trouble with a small Clover that is uncuttable never use -emergent before would like to know if there's anything I can put down now, I do have a son Joe and wondering if I scarifie will it help with the Clover problem?
Yo doc, I've watched tons of your videos and I had a specific question for a problem in my lawn. I've accidentally sprayed round up in a few small spots in my bermuda lawn. Obviously those spots have become dead. It's been over a month and I just planted some hulled seeds in those bare spots with a little bit of top soil. Can I expect to see those seeds growing and filling in those spots? What can I do to help the bermuda take over those bare spots and how long will it take? Thanks!

Welp, just dethatched 3000sq ft of my bermuda with the tines. Got 11 bags. The Scarifier doesn't look like it would get much thatch up from the surface like the tines do.
What do you suspect will go wrong with my lawn, as opposed to using the scarifier??

Better label your sprinkler heads before your cut or you’ll rip them up too. 🤔😉
I seeded my front lawn with Bermuda 2 weeks ago (in NC) and it flooded last week and dropped down to 51 this morning. My lawn experience is not going well.
Did you aerate or top dress with the seed or just threw grass seed down?

How does it work when seeding weaker areas? I have some small hills that get some runoff every year and want to add a light coat of soil3 and mix in the Yukon seed I just bought. Would this be good to use with it or does it only work well with thick areas of grass?

Seed heads do not mean you have a soil condition. It's natural for Bermuda to go to seed in the spring. Happens every year. It's just a phase.
True... but not ALL Bermuda goes to seed head production. i.e. ZERO on the back yard all year, many in the front.
Why do people grow Bermuda lawns? Is it because it's too warm for nicer grasses.
Bermuda isn't a nice grass? Some of the best golf courses, baseball and football fields have bermuda grass.
