I didn't realize that he was Ali's sparring partner for 4 years. That's a career for many. Larry was a great champion. He had an incredibly long reign, ducked nobody and had the heart of a lion.
He ducked plenty. Dokes, Tubbs, Page, Thomas to name a few.
tlig
These are younger guys that started making waves after his prime years. During Holmes championship reign, he avoided nobody,
@@uncjim But he was champion when these guys were around and calling him out. He dropped his WBC title rather than face Greg Page. He was happy to fight young, inexperienced guys but not the young guys that were ready for him? I agree he was happy to face anyone early in his reign but once he beat Cooney he became very careful with his choice of opponent. So saying he ducked nobody is inaccurate.
tlig I wasn’t aware of that
He got that from Ali
The ali fight should never have happened
He was able take so much damage, the boxing world was fooled.
Yea, but Ali needed that paper.

Larry Holmes is one of the Greatest Heavyweight Boxers of all time; and I'm proud of you, Sir. When I was in the U.S. Air Force stationed overseas, we watched your fights at 3 or 4 in the morning, and you always delivered. Brothers walked around with their chest out and shoulders back, because you let the world know we're smart and powerful men. You're a true Champion, Sir.
Holmes is under rated. He is one of the all time greats. Hes so humble, interesting and ,not punch drunk or full of himself
You are correct, he is underrated!
Larry Holmes deserves more recognition, unfortunately he was in the unenviable position of being the man who came after Ali, and the man before Tyson.
He only beat Ali due to Parkinson’s
He was unlikable that was his problem
'' no white fighter will ever beat a black fighter as long as black fighters fight the way they do''- Larry Holmes. He was in that black supremacy stuff . just imagine if fury, ggg, loma, usyk would come out and say that when they would beat black fighters. imagine the reaction geeez....

nvan guy ...lmfao this is an insult to 40 year olds all over the world. Larry Holmes can’t pass as being a 40 year old. If you said 55 then yes but not 40.
Larry’s not lying...He was a bad man. Extremely underrated! Larry is an all time great. Top 5 all time.
Ali, Foreman, Louis, Dempsey, Frazier, Marciano, Lewis, Holyfield, Jack Johnson etc and there's fighters like Patterson, Liston, Tyson, Ken Norton, Klitschko and many others in reserves. I can't have Larry anywhere near a top 5 of all time. He unfortunately for him beat no bodies during his 7 year title reign and lost to a cruiserweight Spinks twice. Him being in a weak era isn't his fault and he could've done well agasint some on the list there and beaten some, but him not getting a lot of recognition is unfair to a degree. However, this is partly bad luck with the era and opponents he had as well as being extremely unlikeable.
He was a top 7 heavyweight in the 70s and a top 2 in the 80s and somewhere in top 10 in the 90s as a old man. He had a great jab and was a fine boxer who defended his title for 7 years, but he really has to come to terms with not being liked and stop being so bitter, just move on Larry it's fine.
Yes, easily.
Holmes never fought the real Ali, just as Tyson never fought the real Holmes.
Fair statement.

Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest. Two time fighter of the decade. Record of 120-1 in the first decade. 15 round bouts. Fighting 10 times a year as a world champion. Pioneer and bar setter
Ali and Leonard would agree with that
Sugar Ray Robinson as a Welterweight - the phase of his career that many boxing fans really don't know about- was virtually Supernatural.
20:40 That's a respectful amount of speed and power. There's also some accuracy there you can see it. This was one of the coolest interviews I've ever seen. Very cool.
It helps you understand why he kept fighting so long. Funny hes 64. I sparred a 64 year old ex pro a few years ago. I thought he was 50 tops going in but still went easy. Thing is though we ended up having a good spar. I'll never forget that. It's a slow decline not a freefall. Athletes usually retire due to injury accumulation not age.
People often overlook the ‘78 title match between Norton/Holmes. Easily, one of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time.
People maybe .. proper fans … don’t .
Respect Holmes but Iron Mike Tyson had 9 title defenses not 4, and was the heavyweight champion from Nov 86 to Jan 1990. Became undisputed in 87' or 88' I think. That's 3 years and 2 months then the man literally went to prison.
came back and became WBC Heavyweight champ against 250 Bruno.
Edit: Holmes pulled the size card. Tyson may be short for elite heavyweight but he was a genetic freak. 220 pounds of destruction with 20.5 inch neck and size 15 shoes at only 5 '10 which makes his resume and legacy even more impressive. The baddest man on the planet still.
Oh also the last line, he stole from Ali 😂
Glad you pointed that out ..it just goes to show Larry is not a graceful legend ..he still has some hate for Tyson beating his ass ..mean while I never heard Tyson sounded bitter or hateful on his hot box show ..the man gave Holyfield his credit he game Lewis his credit come on man ..Larry need to be more humble.

Ali couldn't touch his nose when he fought Holmes.
I agree with you, when larry fought Ali the latter has already symptoms of Parkinson.
Yep and the last thing Holmes wanted was to fight Ali because he knew it was a no win situation. You can thank Don King for setting it up and when Ali was all beat up in the hospital King showed up with a briefcase containing 50 thousand dollars. Don proceeded to tell Ali that the gate wasn't as good as expected and he asked Ali if he could Ali sign off on the 2 million King still owed Ali for the briefcase with the 50 K. Larry Holmes. Went 48-0, was a few weeks shy of his 35th birthday before he tasted defeat. Heavyweight champion for seven years, successfully defended the title 19 times but yeah, Ali and Tyson.
He was actually already 35 when he tasted defeat (officially). He'd clearly lost his previous fight versus Williams.
What about Ali and Tyson ? It’s all about Joe Louis

@Shaun Davenport He beat some great Fighters and stop quite a few from being grear
Wait a minute, Holmes was robbed against Spinks because the powers that be didn't want a black man tying or breaking Rocky Marciano's undefeated streak of 49-0. title is misleading and disrespectful towards holmes. to say he beat ali and fought tyson doesn't change the fact that his career outside of those two fights was nothing but legendary!
Totally agree mate. Disrespectful title
When Larry lost to Tyson, he was old. Put the young Holmes(that beat up Ken Norton) in with Tyson. The loss to Tyson means nothing.
@@thatismattjohnson978 Tyson was a beast in 87/88. Larry was 4 years older and went the distance with Holyfield in 1992 when Holyfield was in his prime. Give Tyson some credit.
Actually it gives him way more respect than he deserves. Why does the title say beat Ali but only "fought" Tyson. He got his ass whupped by Tyson and if Ali was even a decade younger he would have smashed him to smithereens. If Ali was even younger, say, in the days when his fights were in black and white, Ali might even have killed him. Certainly his career and self esteem.

Larry Holmes is one of my favorites but he's always been envious of Ali, Larry didn't fight George Foreman, he didn't fight Joe Frazier either, and he beat Ken Norton by one point, Ali has 21 world defenses and in total 24 world championship fights won, Larry fought Ali's leftovers and unnamed wrestlers, there's no comparison possible... Mike Tyson gave u credit when he knocked u out with that shot to the forehead. He said i couldn't have touched a young Larry Holmes,Maybe he could have but he gave an over the hill Larry Holmes credit, he gave you plenty of respect.
Great comment and perfectly said.
I was thinking the same thing, he should be more humble. He couldn't knockout an Ali at 2% and got completely knocked into another dimension by Tyson, he's not the Greatest but whatever floats his boat
mike allway gives respect to past figthers, ali, louis, dempsey, liston etc.. never hear of him shitting on opponents outside of figthing promos.
@UCBLcjk5JweXPladOZGqj64w trying to KO Ali from the first bell till the end !!!! Instead !! Karma ! Got to him just like ALI ???👊
When the doctors check out each fighter before the fight Ali couldn't even pass the test where you have to close your eyes and touch your noise. The medication he was talking for his disease really messed him up. That fight should have never happened.
That's a pretty misleading title... he wasnt the man who toppled ali... thats like saying bellew toppled haye or danny williams toppled tyson.. jus much worse.. because Holmes has incredible achievements and was one of the atg hws
Sky Sports are always over the top with their titles
plus the Ali he fought was a diminished Ali
Junaid Ahmed that's not Larry's fault though is it. If Ali and his handlers felt he was past it then they shouldve denied the fight, all Larry did was do his job.
Totally on point reply. Holmes toppled Ali in the same sense Tyson toppled Holmes... Clickbait video title for people who know nothing about boxing.
@@zeizaze5159 True. Although the pride Holmes seems to take in the 'victory' is extremely distasteful.
Larry was just misunderstood by many but in this interview...he's a humble person and truly one of the greatest.
I think the main reason he didn't get more recognition is branding. Tyson, Ali, even Klitschko all have really distinctive looks and fighting styles, even names. Larry Holmes just looks like a generic 70's/80's boxer and overall the brand just isn't there even though the skills were. His 2 most famous fights were also both unfortunate in different ways and didn't really help.
He's a rat
Respect to Holmes but Ali had Parkinson's and the whole world including doctors knew his last couple of fights shouldn't have gone on.
Ali made Larry holmes and larry never gives credit to Ali . trash talks Mike Tyson behind his back and claims he was past his prime when Tyson fought him Yet after mike he fought 20 more fights and won all 17 . thats why nobody gives shit about his career . despite all his flaws in his day people still love mike Tyson to this day. NOBODY knows who larry holmes is .
You are so on point, and thats what holmes compare himself to
Ali wasnt even able to defend himself when Holmes fought Ali that fight shouldnt even count.
Holmes is in denial about alot. At his best and Ali at his best, Holmes was 75 % of Ali. And he didnt have as good left hook as Ali so he totally relied on the jab more. And that was how his jab would be timed from time to time. Ali had a complete arsenal! Holmes was a bit clumsier as well in comparison. Even the first time Holmes spared with Ali, he was a coming back Ali. the phisical peak was behind him. According to autopsy Ali started secretly going to the Doctor in 1972 for his health problems, nd it started to take its toll over the next few years. that was a year after he gave Holmes his first black eye. and He also lied about the jab. he claim to made up. he learned the jab from Ali. I listen to how he explained the jab which is the exactly the same way Ali describes it in a 1960s video. but the only difference is he nick named that discription snake lick. But its described function is exactly the same. around 1976 Holmes appeared a bit quicker because Ali was getting slower and his words were becoming slurd as well. And during this time period Holmes went on his own. The fight Doctor quit working with Ali because he wanted him to quit. Holmes was a great fighter, but not as great as Ali inearly come back year's and definitely not the in his prime. He would have remained only Ali sparring partner.
True man..if u listen him carefully..he doesn't talk full honesty about Ali..Greatest Mohammed Ali 🙏
Larry was a great, great boxer. Never got the credit he deserved. Lookin' good, Larry!

Wonderful interview. Loved it during lockdown
True that
I always thought Larry Holmes was one of the most efficient fighters ever. Like he made his punches count. He wasted no punches. He had a high punch connection rate. He was very accurate with his punches.
Also appears Holmes wasn't in the best shape or as he said they moved the fight up with Tyson cutting his training time down. But physically he seemed slower, less confident and couldn't get out of the way of Tyson's haymakers. I think a prime Larry Holmes could have beaten Tyson. Just like Buster Douglas did to Tyson. A good prime boxer like Holmes or Douglas can beat a Tyson. That's all assuming they don't get caught with one of Mikes vicious hooks or uppercuts. Tyson was a monster with his body shots to both sides followed with his vicious uppercuts that would drop anyone.
Ali and Tyson - 2 colossal greats on either side of Holmes legendary run. This duality dimmed the lights significantly on his glittering career, period.

He agreed to fight Ali only because he was broke and needed the money. He held back and cried after the match. Much respect for this man
said lag Someone had to come along post Ali. It was Larry Holmes. He did a great job. Extreme competitor.
