  • With Henry Cavill's announcement that WB & James Gunn are moving on from his portrayal of Superman, it's an appropriate time to reflect on some of the symbolic significance of his particular portrayal of the character in Zack Snyder's "Snyderverse."

The thing is most people didn't want a more realistic and grounded portrayal of this character. They just wanted yet another iteration of the exact same character they grew up with. Nostalgia is the most addictive drug of the 21st Century. Hollywood has come to understand this and that's why we see remake after remake. Zack dared to deconstruct Superman and they punished him for it. I'm sure Gunn is writing a very typical version of Superman and it'll be better received than Zack's, but it will be shallow and uninspired. Many creators fear taking risks, and who could blame them when audiences punish them for it.

I knew the second that James Gunn was hired to lead the DCEU, I knew it was trouble. The last time DC had someone from marvel in charge of any project it ended up being a massive embarrassment for them. DC should not be like Marvel.

I really disliked Suicide Squad as well. I find James Gunn's humor to be sophomoric and his movies have very little substance. The original DC Animated Universe gave DC the blueprint for how to do this well and honor the characters. I don't understand how they've made it this difficult 😕

I, too, lament the death of Cavill's Superman. Man of Steel is much deeper than many people give it credit for. Your analysis of the time Man of Steel came out in vs the time Christopher Reeve's Superman came out in is fascinating and, in my mind, dead-on. And I lament that we'll never see the rest of his story, because Zack Snyder had a vision for an arc for Superman. People complained a lot about how it was a darker Superman and all that, but that was the point. It was the starting point of the arc, and it was, as you said, an arc that was predicated on the time he's existing in, so angry, distrustful, cynical. But by the end, he would've been the hopeful Superman people were hoping for, but it would've been the culmination of an arc of trials and tribulations for him to get there, rather than just starting at the end of the arc.

  • @AlexanderProcopis
    @AlexanderProcopis Před rokem +3

Snyder's first two films so pierced to the heart of what was going on that the very critical reaction to Man of Steel, but particularly to Batman v Superman, actually became a part of the narrative the films were playing out. Critics rejected a serious superhero film that actually wanted to do the work to establish credible goodness by taking seriously the anxiety of doubt that we are all wrapped up in, preferring the meaningless propaganda of Marvel and the cheesy innocence of the Reeve superman films which allow them to maintain their cynicism and nihilism by making sure that all cultural depictions of goodness and heroism are unrealistic. The same failure to see the reality of the good, only possible by first truly grappling with how fucked up culture is rather than constant ironising and coping mechanisms, is shown in MoS and BvS (Perry White, Lex etc.).

Im sad to see this end but it could of been avoided. If WB would of understood what Snyder and Cavill were doing with the character and the DC characters as a whole from the get go we would of had closure by now. WB panicking cause of audience scores and critical reviews made them reactionary and it cut this storyline off.

Thanks you for fleshing this version of Superman....which I TRULY resonated with and LOVED !!
I have never fully subscribed to the Christopher Reeves Superman - like the movies, just the goodie clean hero, makes no sense, an alien who could literally burn the world down, and choosing altruism because some farmers raised him with the 'American' value !!?!? This day and age, with what we know about the US ...laughable really...but an alien, rightfully struggling through what his existence means and then choosing to do what he does because "he wants to" solely on the back of it being the moral and just thing to do, just sounds more plausible.
Which was why some hating the portrayal by ZS and Cavill caught me off guard ...from MOS, to BvS and ZSJL, the arc was clear for the trinity, and some execs coupled with some gaslighting free lancer-type youtube pundits were vocal enough to disparage the BEST portrayal of the Kryptonian on screen.

Nailed it. So many Snyderverse haters could never grasp this. It’s weird. They need to be spoon fed formulaic cartoons from Marvel or they don’t get it. Don’t get me wrong, Marvel is legit too, but they don’t hold a candle to MOS/uBVS/ZSJL. But you have to have a brain to enjoy Zack’s films to the fullest.

I hope they at least get henry cavill as a creative advisor or something because he really understood the character of superman. He said it best but our society and our world NEEDS a superman more than ever. Portraying superman in this day and age is a public and cultural responsibility. Superman is perfect because he's relatable. He's just like us and anyone can project themselves onto. At his core he's a humble farm boy from kansas. But he's also the ideal human we should all strive to be. A symbol and an example of what we can become. Everyone in the world knows superman, everyone can project themselves onto superman, everyone can agree with his ideals. I feel like with the impact that movies have, a superman movie that makes the audience come out of the theatre with the desire to do good is the best possible thing and something this world needs so much.

Yeah, it is a shame this won't be further realized. Then again, given how much people hated it from the onset, I can't say this comes as a surprise.
At least we still have the MonsterVerse. It's got some interesting religious undercurrents to it, and it's not getting rebooted. I've done plenty of dissertations on them myself, but I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts on them.

  • @andrewnicholasjosephbenena4126

For a mastermind genius like James Gunn, all he would have had to do was make a movie like endgame and the MCU did and make dark side the Thanos of the DCU and give all the current Heroes their moment in the Sun to face down the ultimate bad guy battling Dark side,, and then use Flashpoint as the reset and you would be good the fans would get their closure Our Heroes would get the ending of their story and James Gunn and Peter saffron would get their brand new DCU and everybody would live happily ever after.. But Nooooooooo, they're super genius director-type/type producer masterminds Peter saffron and James Gunn who are just super Geniuses many levels above the fans who buy and pay for everything in the DCU can't figure that out?? Unless this is like seventh dimensional chess and we're just so far behind the curve it's like a neanderthal matching wits when an advance alien civilization from another planet or maybe they're just being condescending to their own fans gas lighting everybody and the backlash is going to be so immense that there's going to be nothing left at the DCU, that's just my opinion..
    Just saying..

If it makes you feel any better, Snyder himself desires and expects that he will one day get the opportunity to finish his syory in one form or another. The reason i think that Zack Snyder's Justice League didn't feel like a fully fleshed out response to BVS was because it was i tended to play itself out across at least two other movies. I'd even settle for a graphic novel adaptation of what he wanted. I'm not against this new reboot idea if its actually done well (although i expect it won't be as "contemplative" and existential as the Snyder films, which they don't necessarily have to be), but I do want some complete closure. If I had one complaint about his trilogy, it's that i wish he didn’t make Steppenwolf of all characters the main antagonist. We were supposed to get the Injustice Gang/Legion of Doom and then Darkseid and the other dark gods in parts 2 and 3, but i would have at least liked to see some of the other lackeys of Darkseid in the film get involved. On the religious/philosophical side of things, these three films are trying to look at something that is extremely important to the world today, arguably the world of the last 150-200 years. As a Christian, do I think Christianity has failed? No, I don't. I don't believe in the interpretation of eschatology where thjngs are just destined to get worse and worse hntil things get so hnbelievably borrific that Christ has to return to intervene either. In fact, I think that sort of thinking about the future is precisely why Christianity has gradually ceded ground in the West. I believe that it is the universal church's mission to gradually convert the nations until they are ready to embrace Christ's return as the one, true King, but the decline of Christianity and the degredation (and I wohld say infiltration and subversion) of western society ought to be seen as an opportunity for Christianity in the West to reflect on many of the issues presented in these films that plague our society, learn from its past mistakes, and appropriately evolve (or even go back in some ways), if necessary, in order to be what the world needs it to be. Life, death, and resurrection, death of the old man and the rebirth of the new is kind of the point of the whole deal, so I'd like to believe that our society's relationship to Christ can do the same.

What most DC fans who dislike the Snyderverse don't understand is that Man of Steel is the birth and nurturing of Christ, Batman V Superman: Ultimate Edtion is the percecution and death of Christ, and Zack Snyder's Justice League is the rebirth of and deliverance of Christ.
What's sad to me is that Henry Cavill himself never understood that the Superman he played in Zack Snyder's films was in fact a very positive and hopeful Superman, but he had to endure challenges along the way.
Christopher Reeves Supman was during a time were the majority of people was living in ignorance within the world as it was. You had a mix of World War 2, and Cold War babies who just accepted what the powers that be would tell them, this was also only 10 years after the counter culture of the 1960s saprked a much needed disccussion amongst Americans.
This nation has been in a perpetual state of war since it's inception, was built on the criminallity of slavery and genocide and then dressed up with the false pretense of traditional values, when it's always have been about building wealth on the backs of those who weren't able to fight back.
If it wasn't for the black and native slaves who were kidnapped, raped, and tortured, the ones who actually built this nation then those decendents of slave owners and European immigraants wouldn't have been able to benefit from their labor, engineering and the many inventions black men and women created to make their unpaid work easier.
Henry Cavil's superman was a lot better than Christopher Reeves Superman, unlike Reeves, Cavill's Superman valued and respected all people from all walks of life, Christopher Reeves Superman movies were racist, bigoted, and sexist to a fault.
I hope whoever is next to play Superman will be a much better Superman than Christopher Reeve, and maybe just as great as Henry Cavill's....

The Christian symbolism was never an issue to me. I’ve seen Superman have this Christ allegory before in the comics that’s not the issue. I think the issue in these movies starring Superman is not earning the Christ figure and has more significance throughout the story than it actually needed to. Think of past films that had Christ figure like The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Matrix people seem to like these films and they’re way on the nose of their Christ allegory. The movies are just not good plain and simple, the idea of Superman learning to be Superman is an interesting idea on paper but in practice left a lot of people really conflicted and divided. We don’t really see Clark’s journey more as an alien’s journey because Superman in these movies sees himself as alien not human and that doesn’t seem relatable to the viewer. In BVS this concept of Superman facing the consequences and living in a world that doesn’t trust him is also an interesting idea on paper too, both the comics and the animated series delve in this idea but BVS fails in this regard as we don’t really see much from Superman’s perspective as we see more from the perspective of Batman and the other humans. Also the ideas are not given enough time to explore or delve into as the movie needs to move on to the next scene. BVS is a whole mess of ideas as it tries to add too much and tries to do things too soon. That’s why these movies failed.
