Hi
Mistakes were made... Mistakes were corrected...
Bear in mind that, before you watch this video...
😊
Right, VW Passat, came to me with a very rough idling when cold, and randomly throwing an engine light on...
On a scan, P0171, the engine was running lean, could also see that on the live data...
After quite a bit of wrong turns, and head scratching, found the issue!
And probably, nothing that you would imagine it could be the culprit...
Follow me on this video to find out what was the problem and how to resolve it.

I wish I had seen this video a year ago Luis, my other half has an Audi 1.8 tfsi with exactly the same problem, underside is covered in oil, runs/ idles like a bag of s-it, it has had everything replaced and I mean everything! The car has been mothballed for the last year because I just had given up on trying to fix it myself, I let a friend try to fix it who also has given up, but I will do a smoke test on it and I think I will find the same problem. This car is like a bad dog; it has a pee wherever I leave it! lol. Thanks for the video Luis, you are the maestro!
☺️
Thanks!
👍👍👍
I’d never of thought a crank seal could be that bad to cause an air leak, nice work 👏🏻👏🏻
☺️
Thanks!
👍👍👍
on 2 strokes its even worse it makes it lean and burn trough piston or seize engine
Everyone makes mistakes, it’s the recovery that counts! Nice job Luis
😊👍👍👍
While I was watching the test, I thought that 2 bar was too much for the test and that the seal popped out. But it was proven that he was still bad, so congratulations on a good job. 👌👌
☺️
👍👍👍
surprised the clutch was not slipping with all that oil, good video 👍
Indeed!...
Probably it was, and I was just not made aware... lol
👍👍👍
At 36 minutes I paused the video to write this. Imagine if this was a 4 motion and you were going to do this job😤😤. ( edit ) That was a nice diagnose and it might be an eye opener for people that don't understand lean and rich codes or vacuum and lack of it. Great video Luis and big surprise that the client himself was clever enough to suggest a clutch change and not asking you to clean it with some brake cleaner🤣🤣.
🤣
Indeed... would be a shame puy the old clutch back in... lol
Thanks, for watching and for your comment!
👍👍👍
Hi Luis, I did think for a minute 'That smoke is coming out the bolt holes' but you did say that was a bit of fun lol, but it was quite clear that oil was pouring out the seal from all the oil in the bell housing and all around the back face of the engine, great call, love the videos, I've learned a a great deal from the videos you've done over the years many Thanks..
☺️
Thanks!
👍👍👍
Great video and not only do we learn by your successes, we also learn by your mistakes which saves us making them 😂 Thanks 👍
☺️
That's the whole point of all of it...
👍👍👍
Good morning Luis and well done finally diagnosing a faulty crankshaft seal issue. Your honesty and learning from your mistakes makes watching your channel interesting. Great work once again.
☺️
Thanks!
👍👍👍
Learn something new everyday, new one for me but that's why I watch the vids.
Great one again Louis,as diagnose Dan says "fixed it again ".
Keep up the great content 👌
☺️
Thanks!
👍👍👍
„...no lights other than...THE TYPICAL ONE“ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have commented on one of your videos before about this, and I still see the fuel light on/very low on like every second video 🤣
You did a nice job there! Mistakes are always acceptable if you notice them and make them right, cheers, keep up!
☺️
Thanks, for watching and for your comment!
👍👍👍
Hi Louis! Nice video as always. A little tip I've learn from the US guys (they mostly work on petrol engines), whenever you have a hard time finding the stft or ltft or lambda etc. go to EOBD. The pids are always in the same place no matter the engine and they make your diagnostic easier. The VAG channel system is not very intuitive if you don't work them everyday. Cheers!
☺️
No, they are not very intuitive...
Thanks for the tip...
👍👍👍
Absolutely, working out the status of the lambda control from the binary string in MWB 1 is a pain in the, well, lower back area. I mean it can be done but why the hassle.
😅
You're right, I've learned that from SMA chanel and later heard of that from SD...
Found it can't believe what effects the engine who would of thought it seal was the problem
☺️
👍👍👍
Hi Luis another great job I'm glad you persevered with showing the complete repair great job 👍
☺️
Thanks!
👍👍👍
nicely done there could the old pcv valve caused the crankshaft seal to go if the turbo pressure was getting past and into crankcase a correct diagnose is worth every penny and proving it with the repair bet the owner was very happy if i saw that clutch plate i would have refused to refit it it was about to fail and you know who would get the blame ps good morning Luis
It is a good possibility as why the seal failed...
I warned him about the state of the clutch... so, I wouldn't accept any blame... though wouldn't surprise me if he would try...🤪
👍👍👍
I have learned something new today. Never seen this before. Great job.
😊
👍👍👍
A great educational meal
Thank you for all that knowledge
You are the best
And finally, good morning
☺️
Thanks, and good morning!
👍👍👍
Top job again Luis, so nice you ended up being able to fix it. Was this the Passat you mentioned on the astra video? I thought it was another case of catastrophic engine damage so nice to see it getting back on the road.
☺️
Can't remember know, but I believe it was...
👍👍👍
What a job.Congratulations 😊

Great fix!

Good job 👍

I had a VW Golf 1.4 TSI with the same code, and the diagnosis was the same. The seals on some models are really difficult to do and you need special tools as you say.
☺️
👍👍👍

😊
Thanks!
👍👍👍
Nice to see the correct repairs I cluding the clutch being replaced. Wonder how many people may of wrongly diagnosed it throwing parts canon
☺️
👍👍👍
Nice
☺️
Thanks!
👍👍👍
So if you would put smoke into intake pipe(where u covered with glove) it would show the problem also right? Thanks
Hello sir!!very good diagnosis!!! How much pressure with your smoke machine do you add inside the engine when you search for leaks?? What pressure is safe? Thanks in advance!best regards!!
Hi
I usually don't go too high...
1 bar, sometimes close to 2... didn't ever needed to go any higher...
👍👍👍
@@LMAutoRepairs really 1 bar??there is no chance for the mechanical parts to be damaged?? Some smoke machines i search they have maximum pressure 0.3 bar ...so I can put 1 bar pressure for check without fear to break something or throw out of seat any crankshaft or camshaft seal???
When you test the entire crank case, like on this case, I usually go low, 1 bar max...
When testing the intake, I usually go bit higher if needed, specially on turbocharged engines...
@@LMAutoRepairs thank you very much sir!!!
Good diagnosis. I’ve been a mechanic for forty years, and I’ve never seen that before. A quick question. How did you clean the injector nozzles?
☺️
Old fashion way... lol
With some cleaning solvent, and a small wire brush...
Not how it should be done, but for what it was, was good enough...🤪
👍👍👍
@@LMAutoRepairs as long as it works, who cares!!

Absolutely!

Hey
I want ask if oil leak anywhere or colant leak so can also come code p0172 rich
how can crankshaft seal make such problem, unreal stuff
REAR MAIN REAL!
Question do you think that a failed pcv valve could have caused the pressure to build inside the crank case during wot .that pcv system to complicated it has a spring inside with a diphram sort of as a wastegate lol.
A very plausible possibly...
👍👍👍
Hello by the crankshaft seal can also spot engine oil from car?
Yes...
👍👍👍
its easier to watch short and long term fuel trims from OBD, not from engine ecu. Nice fix!
What a stupid phrase! And from where OBD take fuel trim value?
@@moldovanandrei7008exactly, someone trying to sound clever.
I apologize for my wording but if you work with cars, you know what I mean
@jusgaa
I know what you mean...
☺️
I really can't believe a leaking rear main seal will cause those running problems but I guess I am about to be proven wrong
☺️
👍👍👍
Well done Luis! Keep up the good work :D
☺️
Thank you!
👍👍👍
Realmente uma boa explicação...e este ano não vem de férias a Portugal?
Sim... este ano vou...

Can i ask, what is that smole machine what you use? Looks very good tool. I use Autel SDT-208, but that looks it can make hi pressure, because need external compressor....
I made this one myself... as per the video...
Links in the description...
Was a kind of a project at the time...
👍👍👍
@@LMAutoRepairs That was great video, and tool. Somebody should make that kind tools for sell. Better than smoke machines, what have own compressor, because they make low pressure. Of course need low pressure machines too for evap, but if want find leak from exhaust example, your tool must be good for it.
☺️
👍👍👍
You could use an endoscope to record a video.
Yes I could...
👍👍👍
Dear sir can you tell me how check leak in citroen c4 grand picasso patrol 1.8《2007》engine code 6fy. Which way is good send smok thanks
Same principle as in this video...
So i just put smoke pipe in oil dip stick and check
Is this right
For the crank yes...

Merhaba luis p0171 in yanında p0221 hata kodu beraber yanıyor ve ekranda EPC MotorStorüng Werkstatt denen bir yazı çıkıyor lütfen ne yapmam lazım cevap verirmisin ?
Check the p0021 first, check the timing etc...
The p0171 could be a consequence of the timing problem...
