- In this extraordinary behind-the-scenes film never intended for broadcast, we follow a complete BBC production from script to screen in January 1968. With director Christopher Barry at the helm, and production assistant David Maloney, we see the process of rehearsing, blocking, vision mixing and location work in a way that would have been identical to the creation of a black and white Doctor Who serial. We even see a photo from Power of the Daleks displayed on the wall.
This training film documents the recording of the Z Cars episode "What D'Yer Mean - Charity?" which was broadcast on 26th Feb 1968. - Zábava
This episode they're rehearsing is actually missing, so it's an even more fascinating look at the episode than it otherwise would be!
Yes I was thinking about that, really underminds all the work you see in this film only for the final production now lost for ever.
Brilliant! Thanks for posting. Awesome to see how it was done back in the day when the BBC was an in-house show factory of the highest order.
Joss Ackland! Think this is the only clip from his time on Z Cars in existence. And since this is a Dalek based channel, spotted a Power of the Daleks photo around the 5 minute mark.
With the Doctor Who connections it would make a fantastic extra on one of the 60's Box sets.
Wonderful. I love things like this. Shaun Sutton's a good teacher.
There's a Daleks Invasion of Earth photo on the wall behind Christopher Barry.
The designer is John Stout who ten years after this would design the sets for The Stones of Blood.
I love that studio model!
This type of TV making really is a lost art - it makes you appreciate how much they achieved💯
The photo is from Power of the Daleks 😊
and Dalek invasion of earth hence the Dalek in the Thames and the Trafalgar square pictures.@@cosmicphil4445
@@cosmicphil4445 I thought it was a Daleks' invasion of Earth picture at first. However since Christopher Barry was the director of Power of the Daleks it probably is.
There are at least four photos of Daleks. They come from both of those stories.
That wonderful studio model with those beautiful models of the cameras and sound booms 😍
A brilliant piece of TV production history!
just found out this sepcific episode of z cars is missing. unbelievable find.
you can see three photo's from the dalek invasion of earth at 1:43.
Wow. Working in broadcast for the last 25 years, this is gold for me to see. I’m guessing this was a woodnorton training film?
That's where I saw it... A49
Wonderful stuff! I've no connection with television at all (apart from repairing them back in the day) and loved seeing the equipment and how it all comes together for the final production. My parents loved Z-Cars. Cheers!
Oh wow, absolutely amazing to see this and what a wonderful director Christopher Barry was so calm and thoughtful, fascinating stuff
Proper old school BBC!
i reckon Shawcraft built the model set and cameras.thanks 4 uploading.
Fascinating, thanks for sharing, if I’d had my time again I’d loved to have been involved in BBC production.
Sometimes I wonder what if modern shows, especially Doctor Who were still filmed like this today.
All it’s missing is a live audience, given that studio filming felt like filming a sitcom.
This is incredible
Now there is an inspiration for a new Character Options Doctor Who playset - TC1~~!
That was a really interesting watch. I work in post-production/distribution so I don't know much about production workflows, but I'm sure directors had to carry a lot more of the load back then compared to now. Live studio recording and vision mixing always looks so stressful, I don't think I could handle it! I did some live broadcast master control room work early on in my career, that was more than enough. Nice to see some of the legendary Joss Ackland too, I'm surprised he never made it onto an episode of Who.
A lot of the stress of live editing drama could be removed by planning.
itg looked hectic and gives a lot of us a new appreciation for old BBC recordings.
It just dawned on me at the end - was this being simultaneously filmed and broadcast LIVE? No wonder it required such meticulous planning!
Also great to see the late great Jimmy Ellis at work, he of course was in Battlefield later on
'That's right, Mr. Cholmondley Warner!' 😄
A fascinating piece of history.
Fascinating stuff. Imagine if it covered Camfield shooting Web of Fear...
Fascinating!
Amazing this film has survived, given BBC's penchant for destroying film back then. It may have an interesting story of its own to tell? Seems that someone, some time, cared enough to save it from the skip. After all, this episode of Z Cars is long gone.
Real head scratcher.
Fascinating! I love the model sets
I’m always amazed on how you managed how to find these.
Good stuff. It’s a shame that long takes using multiple cameras has died off, as it gives things a much more real feel.
This is fantastic!!
This is fantastic. Its facinating to see how much work went into a production to be seen just once. How did you come by this?
Brilliant, nice blast from the past with Z Cars, this was really interesting, much more easier with the technology these days, thanks to all the team at Dalek 63-88 for this.
Absolutely fascinating. It's such a shame that this multi-cam directing skillset is probably lost for good.
A rare treat... greatly enjoyed. Thank you.
broadcast the day my brother was born.
studio 3 is now where gmb and this morning are filmed
This was interesting the complex nature of doctor who must of made it harder. So different now like tom said that a directer or a anouncer hes not on floor. compare to making silver nemesis different
I am thoroughly enjoying this like. Brilliant find.
Fascinating.
Yo! This is amazing! Good find.
Fair dos. Sean Sutton was a fine presenter
Great!
Now, if only it would have been dalek masterplan or fury of the deep being filmed...
and this episode of z cars no longer exists in any format. Absolute crime to bin any programme from the era.
@@JohnKobaRuddyThere’s some programmes today we’d happily bin including Big Mouth.
wow
I bet Christopher Barry was good at jigsaw puzzles, how on earth did he manage to direct the first dalek story without going mad
A M A Z I N G
Pauline Delaney too!
I don’t give a monkey’s at my chances of surviving the workday.
I work in TV and film, and never had such a warm and wise taking to as the one in this film by Shaun Sutton. What a progressive style of leadership.
Peter Warmsly genuinely drying... 👀
That Shaun Sutton seems like a nice chap. Might write to him about an acting job.
Odd to think it was made in colour too
Have you guys heard of the VHS from 1993 of the history of the daleks called Dalekmania - the history of the daleks on the big screen, might help with older research
We have yeah. It’s got some nice stuff on there.
@@Dalek6388 ah nice! Find it awesome the research you do, found my self wanting to get it and take notes 😂
Makes it seem a terribly complicated job compared to today
Is that a lost episode of Z-Cars?
I believe so!
“What d’yer mean - Charity?” Transmitted 26/02/68 and 27/02/68 (at this point in it’s history, Z Cars was shown twice a week on successive days, one story a week in two 25 minute episodes.)
*All* the episodes from 1968 are missing.
@@DVB0are there any tele-snaps?
It helps if you can lip read.
interesting but could barely hear it.
Sounds perfectly audible to me.
I agree, though it may be partly that the original source is in mono, but either way it needs some turning up to hear (and subtitles are less than accurate so can't entirely compensate if the volume cannot be turned up for whatever reason). Then when the many ads come on the volume is suddenly rather higher, which for me became a game of how quickly I could remove my headphones vs how quickly could the site could buffer and start playing the ad. It really is great to see this video though, and given the original source is 55 years old at this point some quirks with either sound or vision are to be expected.
David Maloney once said something along the lines of:
"I'd like to see Dr Who come back, but not as a multi million pound extravaganza, but something cheap & cheerful. Like it used to be"
I wish he was right.
Both version suit mr fine. I'd love to work on, or have a part in the new Who !
Is it just me or does the audio stutter?
That's film for you. I was a V T man. Irritating VT never got a mention, neither did the sound mixer.
How disappointing! ... I thought we were going to see a Dalek training film! 👎🤣
I notice none of the female production staff get a credit - and also the fishmonger from Passport Pimlico.
