Scruton is the only cornerstone of my conservatism today. He has proved so prescient. Savor every word.

I'm nowadays in a great interest about conservative thinking and way of Life. We can inherit much superior human qualities from conservatism.

Sylvio Hillas Yeah. I for one am tired of modern conservatism. It's mostly itellectually bankrupt.

@@davelong9055 True, but that doesn't discredit what I said.
Also, it depends what kind of socialist we are talking about.

How could Scruton state that the market isn't an enemy of tradition? One must be blind and deaf.

Yeah that was one of the causes to the fall of conservatism as well as foreign intervention and a lack of action or at least a willingness to adopt policies that the progressives had 10 years ago. The modern Republican party isn't much different from the Obama administration. Pres. Trump briefly changed that but unfortunately sort of fell into the trap too.

In my view, a proper American Conservative must recognize the merit of the market as the most effective, but also, however, that it must be constrained. Just as the average individual must be taught and practice self-restraint so as not to lead to ruin of oneself and wider society.
If I could think of a term for this, it would be "Dynamic Balance."

Smart man but needs to let go of the old alliance. Although libertarians and libertarianism has many good ideas and good theorists such as HH Hoppe and Murray Rothbard, I think we need to understand that the Cold War is over. What we are confronted with is not the socialism of old. Although it may have some aspects that are familiar. And conservative seem to forget is that like Socialism, capitalism is progressive since conception in the Enlightenment have evolved to the woke plague we know today. And will continue descending into the abyss, eating itself like ouroboros because it's a materialist/nihilist inversion of Protestant theology and where building heaven on Earth is only achieved by perpetual revolution

I thought today that governments could save up for the next recession based on the idea that each century, there are on average 28 years of recession.

Very true. It's important for people to learn and to remember that Libertarianism is simply logically downroad of Classical Liberalism without God. Whereas Leftisim broadly is the rejection of Liberalism in so far that it believes it can achieve Liberalism's promise of "true" Liberation through rejection of Liberalism's perceived safeguards of the individual and by revolution through the attempted destruction of anything from hierarchy itself, to human nature, biologically, etc. Overlap is, of course, present due to implementation, individuals, and topics.

The Royal Family has always used the media for their brand-promotion. The Diana phenomenon did supercharge this relationship, but I do not have that much sympathy. We now live in the age of Meghan and I wonder what the deferential Scruton would say about her?

American intellectual Conservatism was part of the "Fusionism" coalition to fight and win The Cold War.
With the fixing of the Economy in the "short-term" and the full victory of the interconnected American globalized market systems, the Era of the Neoconservative and Neoliberal consensus took over. Liberal and by extension libertarian social values became the heart of society, which inevitably led to further cultural rot, decay, bad/almost no long-term planning, further development of the hyper obsession with the individual, pain reduction and pleasure seeking becoming the highest form of "good" in society, continuing transhumanist ideology, and so on.
Trump was mostly focused on the economic side of the issue in office, that there was too much unfair disadvantaging "free trade" and wage suppression from foreign workers in and outside the country. Of course rhetoric wise, he was also railing against political correctness and then eventually what would go on to become known as wokeness in policy as a whole. Trump indeed completely disrupted and has now almost fully laid the path of destruction for the Washington Establishment newconservatism of old. Neoliberalism and all manner of evil and self-destructive Leftisim still remain in play and holding on to power of course.
Even with the temporary loss of Trump after the 2020 election, Conservatives, especially the younger generations, have benefited from actually learning and brainstorming their and other's history, who they are, and who they have yet to become.
True American intellectual Conservatism will one day be reformed into something both Timeless and New. Truly Progressive. Within a proper recognition Moral framework to conserve and cultivate for beauty and meaning. God recognized in all things and understanding.
Sorry for the long reply. Your comment was just a great opportunity for me to think! God bless!
