Ah yes Windows 8.1 Vista edition. A true classic. Also I see hard drives get a lot of flak online but the truth is hard drives aren't that slow and no 20 minutes to boot any windows operating system is a massive red flag whether it's a hard drive or not. And I'm still using Windows 10 on a hard drive and it's surprisingly quick to boot.
How someone could throw away such a high-end pc without testing other PSU. I mean, its old technology But replace the HDDs for an SSD and it's completely fine for daily use or Not heavy gaming. PD: I have the same Golden Orb II CPU Cooler and weights like a ton!
I love refurbishing old computers to sell, donate to charities, and occasionally to keep for a special purpose. They are great for streaming, a home server, old games (10 to 30 years old), and tinkering with Linux. Throw in an SSD and maybe update the BIOS and put in a better CPU (cheap from EBay). I sometimes buy a palette of 30 to 40 of them from a state university auction for just $100 to $200. A few cheap hardware upgrades, update Windows and good to go. I can sell them for $200 each. Dell and Lenovo have support assistant utilities that tell you exactly what is in them and what they can be upgraded to. But the power supplies are low wattage proprietary garbage. Motherboards also have proprietary connections and mountings (but standard RAM and PCIe).
If the computer is THAT slow, it's likely loaded with bloatware, malware, and possibly viruses. I have an old Gateway Pentium 4 that I use as my "retro gamer", it runs older games I have that don't play well with modern graphics adapters but work well with the older onboard VGA graphics in that machine. When I got it, it was so painfully slow, that I ended up completely wiping the drive, with a drive erase program, and even that took forever to finish up. I did a clean install of Windows XP as well as all of its OEM drivers, for sound, video, etc. and it now runs much faster, like it did when it was new, even with a mechanical hard drive. Since all of the games I use on it are either installed to the hard drive, or on CD ROM, I don't have it connected to the Internet, so it has been safe from being bogged down by anything online.
Definitely wasn't the norm back in the day for a PC to take 20 minutes to boot. There's something wrong with the OS install or a failing hdd if that is the case. Anything over a minute or two for boot times is an issue, even with a mechanical drive.
my workstations was booting in 6 seconds in 2008 with first ssds and others with hdds 25 seconds in 2000 - 2003 in 30 seconds max around and build fix thousands off years ago 20 min would be just screwed up os and crappy hdd
I found a few systems on the side of the road on trash day a few years ago and I snagged em. One was actually a pretty decent AMD Phenom X6 system with a GeForce 8000 series GPU lol.. I put a 1070 Ti into it and it can still run modern titles fairly well at medium-high settings. The only thing wrong with it was a bad stick of DDR3; so it was probably one of my easiest fixes. One persons trashed electronics is my treasure; always looking to grow my collection of fixed electronics! Even snagged a nice 750W EVGA fully modular power supply from a PC that had a bad memory controller.
I have found their is always something to use from junk computers, weather it's saving the screws or repurposing the case or refurbishing an ancient computer for a retro pc customer!!
Great video man. The love of fixing all things PC is so much fun. Also half life 2 is still an amazing game! If it can run half life 2 it's a keeper (just my opinion). I miss the phenom days.

A few comments on your video. First, you never dust the case inside the house. You always do it outside. Actually, you want to thoroughly vacuum clean it first, in order to suck most of the dirt, and then you go outside to air spray it. And it's a good thing to have a soft brush at hand, a women's makeup brush does wonders. Second, if the machine does still not fire up, even after you check that the power button cable is plugged in the right pins, the first thing you do is to unplug the cable again and then you short the two power button pins, meaning the ones that the cable was plugged in previously. This is to make sure that you don't have a malfunctioning power button and/or cable. Then you test it again with another PSU that you are sure it works. Third. Wear a static bracelet in order to avoid some nasty situations. They are dirt cheap on the web and those capacitors can hold A LOT of power for quite a while, even if you have unplugged the power cable from the outlet. You can get a nasty shot, and/or you can burn some valuable components. Best thing to do when you unplug it, is to hit the power button again for two or three times to drain the capacitors. Fourth. me knowing a lot of tech stuff when im 11 years old my mom how did you fix the family pc? but then my friends in school found out about this and then pov my friends:can you fix my pc phone ipad and alot of other things
lol.... yea sometimes i gets that way when people learn you can fix things.
I wouldn't do shit like that for nothing. I'd want something good, money would be best.
It's sortof flattering and fun in the beginning, fixing them up, impressing whomever. But soon you get the feeling you're being taken advantage of, which you are.
Demand something in return. That's what I'd do.
Some people get to be parasites, same as the deadbeats who want my brother to fix their cars, and my brother never ****ing says "show me the money". He's more soft-spoken than I am. Meantime, these ****heads want something on time... "can I pay you later"... etc. ***k them.
that looked more like windows 8 rather than vista
yea the sticker on the case said vista and I got too stuck on that lol...
This was a really fun video to watch.
Thanks
