Young Carers: The Children Sacrificed to Care for Others | Real Stories Full-Length Documentary

  • Every day across the country an army of unsung child heroes faces extraordinary challenges that most adults would struggle to cope with. They are Britain’s 700,000 young carers.
Over the course of several months these young carers allowed our cameras to follow them and their families as they deal with situations most adults would struggle to cope with. All four look after mothers who need continual care - from a life-threatening condition to mental health problems and blindness. What unites them is their deeply engrained sense of responsibility and an unbreakable bond with their mother. They all have to find a way to balance their caring roles with the need to still have and enjoy a childhood.

“Sacrifice” is the right word. I grew up like this and my entire life, all my decisions about my life, revolved around my parent. I didn’t learn who I was or what I needed until I was middle aged and my parent finally died. It ruined my life.

It’s profoundly unfortunate for you not to have had the life you deserved… where you were able to be carefree … and develop your own independence. No child should miss out on a carefree childhood… it’s just so sad you had to grow up so fast, and carry the weight of the world on your shoulders… but please know… there is a special place for you in Heaven… because you are so uniquely EXCEPTIONAL… have faith… you’re going to be ok… ❤❤❤

This is all too real. I’m 22 and have been a carer for my dad for a few years. He has been disabled since a young age but always worked full time at ECU here in Western Australia until he had another accident that made it more severe and stopped him from being able to work a few years ago. It is the most rewarding thing I’ve done in my life but also the most difficult. My heart goes out to these kids, it is a huge responsibility to take on especially for their young ages. These kids are incredible, I wish all the best for them and their families in life.

However, you're an adult making an adult decision. These are children whose childhood is being taken from them due to an ill Mum.
It makes me ill to see small children having to bath their own Mother!

I had to stop my study, seeing friends and also step up as a carer for my younger brother because our mum isn’t around either. It wasn’t easy at all. It’s difficult for any child, no matter how old, to be a carer for their parent.

That’s very nice. I’ve had to take care of my mom the past few months. Thankfully she got better, but you were out of high school. So still young but pretty much an adult. This is not okay at all. They need care takers. If they can’t afford it one should be provided. Children only have one childhood. That’s it and it should not be spent caring for the adults that are meant to be caring for them. We aren’t in the past anymore where kids have to be mini adults. I’ve seen it first hand. Parents having kids caring for them or siblings. It is not fair to the child. They need to be able to be children. They need that time. Working in schools you see the kids that are like this and it’s sad. I know a kid like this. Family. And I’ve watched it first hand and I hurt for her. She had to grow up to take care of herself and parents and siblings too bc why not have them do it instead. You don’t see it until later, but resentment sets in and anger and frustration and then they start their plans to leave as soon as they can. She wants a job now to save to get out. I don’t blame her either.

I was left responsible for my grandmother in my mother’s absence or whenever the health aide was not around. My mother was basically the full time caregiver of her but I still should not have to worry about watching an elderly person in my childhood even if part time. I did not sign up for this. I feel that is why my mother birthed me in the first place, because she needed help with her disabled mom which was unfair to me. I resented my home environment. I was burdened as an only child, absent father raised by a single mother, and a physically disabled grandmother on top of that. No child should ever have to live under those conditions. I tried to mentally disassociate with it as much as possible as a result. I felt like we were more like housemates than family. I really didn’t have much of a family and found my comfort in other people, other interests.

These poor kids are damaged for life. I think the law should not allow parents to do this. Carers should be hired. As someone with less than 10 percent vision who was raised to be independent, I was shocked by the apparent laziness of the blind woman who should have been made to get therapy to learn life and independent living skills. The fact she had a child knowing they would be enslaved is awful. Kids rights need to be put first, and they should not be brainwashed into thinking this is natural and normal. Adults should be caring for their kids, not the other way round. I wish the kids every happiness and freedom.

child parentification is a form of abuse, it's not "learning about life". Also it's your job to educate your children about screen time and teach them to be safe online. Abuse is not a tool to "fix kids". Education should be present so they don't resort to excessive screen time. It's your job as a parent to teach her, and abuse is not a teaching method.@@billyJessica1126

These young people are amazing. They're growing up to be the most functionable adults of their generation, though under the worst circumstances. I feel equal parts admiration and sadness for them. But if any of the young ones from the video, or any children carers are reading this, you have my total respect and I wish you and your parents the best! You are incredible humans and you have taken on tasks far past your age. So many people love you, keep being strong! ❤️

It's never easy. I don't know if it's a problem of this generation but every young person can't understand what you're going through so you end up loosing a lot of friends because they can't understand why you can't go to a party.

The longer I watched, the angrier I got. I'm not against children doing chores, or more than the average kid or helping with certain things if it needs done in situations like these, but every single one of them have other adults in their lives who could be helping and aren't. The boys have a dad, a grandma, and at least one aunt. The girl has a grandma, and the brother is not pulling his weight, plus, that mom could learn to do a lot more for herself. It is not your child's responsibility to take care of you!

I agree 100%. This level of responsibility should have been shared among the whole family; children should be allowed to be children and have time to be with their friends, go to the movies, and just be free to daydream and think of brighter days. Children can and should provide some level of help for their parents, but the parents portrayed here (with the exception of the mum with liver disease) could do more for themselves. Why isn’t the blind mom working? Why can’t the stroke survivor go through occupational therapy to be more independent? I’m a paraplegic and my kids have never, ever done any personal care for me. When I was very ill a few years ago, my husband did much of the care needed, and visiting nurses did the rest. I wanted my kids to know it was a temporary setback. They see me put my wheelchair in/out of the car every single day, go to work every weekday, make their dinner every night, do their laundry, help with homework, and generally be a mom. That’s my job that I got the moment I heard their heartbeats.

    • @catloverKD
      @catloverKD Před 5 lety +14

@@pinkmonkeybird2644 YES, and the mom with liver disease had a husband and a mother, and apparently a sister who only showed up when she got her transplant. If your wife/daughter is dying you can work with your employer or take leave. You don't put the responsibility on your 10 year old! And the stroke survivor has her mom too (who was there the day she attempted suicide.) So, why can't her 11 year old have a childhood?! Growing up, my next door neighbors were a cop and a stay at home mom. They were super-strict parents (because dad saw the worst of the worst), who were sending their kids to public school and also pretty much homeschooling them on top of it. When the mom got Mono, the kids' workload picked up even more. They were 4 and 6 at the time. Looking back, I think that was asking too much of them, I can't even imagine putting this much on a child.

The problem with getting angry is that this documentary is about the children. We have no scope of what the adults do to care for the person in need. It's very unlikely that the kids are left to do everything 100% by themselves, but this documentary is about all of us getting a glimpse of what it's like for children to act as carers. I'd hold your judgement. We have no idea what the family/community dynamic is like for these people and their children.

I’m 21 and I cared for my mom from the age 8 to 17. My dad died when I was 13 so at that point things really became my responsibility even more so. All the comments saying these kids need therapy I couldn’t agree more. My mom got to the point where she absolutely couldn’t live alone I had to make the decision that she had to be put in a nursing home. It was time for me to go to college and I feel as though I had paid my dues and it was time for me to live my life. I hate my family now. Like a lot of these kids I also had other adults in my life who refused to help. They got angry when with me when I decided I was going to live my life. I feel guilty everyday that I choose my life over taking care of my mom. My mom hates me for it and tells me she wants to kill herself. I’ve had to go to therapy to work on this. So yes being a young caretaker should never be an option for kids.

I lived across the country during his surgery. It was difficult getting 25x calls a day from him while working full time at 22. He passed approximately 4.5 years later. Moving from hospital to multiple nursing homes. I cannot image being a child enduring this, I recall calling a trusted family friend’s mother crying on my lunch break asking “I don’t know what to do!” She replied: It’s okay; you shouldn’t. My father’s passing anniversary was approximately one week ago. Beautiful children, growing up too soon, heartbreaking.

It's your job to take care of your kids but it's not the job of kids to take care of parents. This is so wrong!!

I'm sure we don't get shown the full extent of their problems, but why can't the mom who had a stroke do more than she can? I had a coworker at my last job who had a heavy limp like hers and one of his hands was deformed so he couldn't use it, yet he still stocked things and worked like the rest of us. I have no doubt a partial paralysis of the body would completely change one's life, but I suppose I'm questioning if she truly needs her daughter to care for her 24/7.

trash can chic Strokes can do a lot of permanent damage, far more than what you can see physically on the outside in terms of a limp or paralysis, and many stroke patients end up being disabled and fully reliant on care for the rest of their life. They really didn’t go into detail too much about the type of stroke she had or the extent of it, but it was obviously very severe for needing to be hospitalized for over four months and having to be put in an induced coma. Disabilities affect everyone differently, so it’s always best to try not to compare people to one another. Even two people with the same diagnosis can be completely opposite in terms of their capabilities. It’s wonderful that your coworker is still capable of working and being independent, but you have to remember that they are an individual, and that your coworker’s capabilities are unique to them and their specific unique set of circumstances. Strokes come in limitless forms, and no two patients will present exactly the same when it comes to recovery, regaining abilities, and the degree/severity of permanent disability caused. I’m sure the mother in this documentary would love nothing more than to be as independent as your coworker, as it was made clear that she was fully independent before her stroke, and has suffered greatly with her mental health as a result of that independence being taken away. She has clearly worked extremely hard to regain the amount of function that she has (re-learning how to walk, talk, perform tasks, memory & comprehension skills, etc), which that alone signifies that she isn’t just lazy or lacking motivation and that she is giving it her all to the best of her physical and mental abilities. It appears that she does do things for herself, as she is alone while her daughter is at school, and tries to do as much as she can for herself, even if she needs help to finish a task (such as showering herself as much as she can before she has her daughter come in to help her wash her back). Judging by the fact that she can drive, I’m sure that there is a lot more that she can do independently that was not shown in the documentary, because the documentary is mainly focused on showing the children and the tasks that they do, not really focusing on the parent’s own capabilities or what they can do independently. Not enough information was shared to create a realistic view of what a 24 hour day looks like for really any of the families involved, and so it’s hard to know just how much the children do and just how much the parents still do for themselves. Regardless of what the daily reality truly looks like for any of the parents shown, it’s best not to judge or compare what they are capable of, or speculate whether they are capable of doing more than they are. We have to trust and respect that they know their own limitations and capabilities better than anyone else, especially complete strangers who only saw around 15 minutes of their life. Hopefully that helped answer your question. Anyways, I hope you have a good day! God bless! 😊💕

Traumatic brain injuries are tricky things to deal with. But I agree with you. She just sat there while her daughter ironed clothes. Why couldn’t she have moved the ironing board over to her comfy chair and ironed the clothing herself? You only need one hand to iron, and she could have done it sitting down to avoid any balance issues. I think she’s gotten used to her daughter doing everything for her so she’s become a little complacent. It’s super easy to let it happen.

In other cultures family transcends blood relatives and the saying " it takes a village" is seen in action. Everyone unites to care for the elderly and infirmed thus the concept of young caregivers is not as prevalent as in the Western world! However kudos to children who demonstrate true love and kindness!

What a great view. Very true also.. In some parts of the world it is a given that you take care of family no matter. Wouldnt it be great if it was like that all over the world

My mom had cancer and died when I was 18. My dad turned into an alcoholic to cope so I spent 2 years doing this. Left terrible trauma I still haven’t delt with till this day 4 years later. My heart goes out to these children and the families and I hope the children get help before they grow up ❤️
