The MPC Live 2 Is The Mother Of All Music Draft board's, Because of it's True Portability and For Us People On The Go Ah Lot or For Those That Let Nature Inspires... The Live Is An Easy Choice As A Beginner. But For The Seasoned or Schooled Musicians, Yep I See The Machine as A Better Fit. Nevertheless, You Can't Go Wrong with Either of Them. 😁
@@babysunn2 portability and the speakers are something I completly underrated of the live 2. having speakers makes quick sessions so much easier to enjoy not having to hook it up to a system and no need for bulky headphones. Battery powered isn't that big of a deal, it's more the ability to just having it sitting on the lap no need to carry a bulky charger.

The last machine I bought was the Mpc one because of its layout but I have not had the time to learn how to use it yet due to my desk top setup going into storage for a few months...
The MPCs have a bit of a learning curve (as does most gear) but once you wrap your head around them they’re very powerful
I keep treating my MPC one and live like side pieces cause I'm super fast on my maschine lol
🙏🏾💯You make me want to start doing videos, I actually know how to use it very well, A/B nice for blends, fortunate to work at a start up that specialize media and music, Literally got this instrument as a bonus so it was a great score as a producer thats into from scratch vibes , home is producing usually on logic or FL learning my workflows but once I found out about the force, I knew something would change theory about my production And workflows overall, I am so proud that I can say I damn near master this machine the last update I just found out about maybe a week ago so now I am even more intrigued as a producer I use it every day standalone and planning some releases to Ableton as well.
That’s so rad! I definitely recommend making videos if you’re interested in doing it! The more you do it the better you’ll get and the larger an audience you’ll build!

Great video! You also went into details like the buttons. I have the Force and love it, for the similar reasons you mentioned: It‘s the closest to a full DAW ‚in a box‘ thanks to the arranger, plus the 64 pads and 8 knobs (with Oled) are far more workflow-friendly than the 16 pads and 4 knobs on the MPCs. It‘s a bewfy boy, though. I use it on a stand myself.

You have them all including the kitchen sink.! The ‘ideas’ sequencing mode of the Maschine is a huge plus for finishing songs, force only has single sets of scenes and recording a sequence bakes down the selection of clips. Unlike ideas mode, that allows any clip to be used in a song section.

I tried them all and the Force checks the most boxes for me... I run my guitar pedalboard, synths, and vocals into a Headrush Looperboard which doubles as a 4-stereo channel input mixer, then into the Force that is audio interfaced with Abelton... This setup works like a charm for song creation...
Do you write in different time signatures? I owned one for a week and loved it until I realized global metronome/clip launching is essentially stuck in 4/4. You can trick it into doing some odd signatures, but it's not smooth. That was a deal breaker for me. And really my only issue with it haha. Just thought I'd mention it.
Hi Shaigh - I am looking at dollar setup (guitarist myself, have an Headrush looperboard + a few synth). Are you MIDI syncing devices ? Which is the master ? Force or Looperboard to make sure loops are synchronised ? Thanks !

@@WyattLite-n-inn Yeah, you can at least mess with time sig on MPC. I just really don't like the MPC software or the sequence/song modes. Just doesn't work for how I write music.

Great review, I believe your pretty much captured all the pros and cons, I have a Mpc keys and Maschine + and I believe for me as a keyboard player the Keys with all of the new sound packs dominates the Mashine + having a 62keybed built into a daw gives me everything I have ever needed. I wonder if Nativte instruments will be releasing some new products for NAM 2023 that will compete with Akai?
I’ve been thinking about how cool a Komplete Kontrol S61 that could play komplete 14 plugins in standalone would be, I hope they make something like that someday!

But did not get the workflow differences. I got the one, and use it in what I think is linear workflow like in a DAW, I just make one long sequence.
And when not, I use the song mode to join the sequences into one.
Great showdown! - but 1 con you didn't mention for the Force is the lack of a tilt screen.
I noted it a bit by mentioning it needs a stand due to the layout, but yeah a flip screen would be awesome
I agree with your opinion about the button layout of the live 2 compared to the one. The undo button is absolutly misplaced on the live 2, it boggles my mind that we have those almost useless +/- buttons. I don't even mind the pads on the side, in fact not having the screen in my face helped me concentrate more but idk, I'm weird I guess.
Also the button per function aspect of the one. The pad menu shortcuts are okay and help get stuff done but having no dedicated programm edit button really sux tbh.
I don't mind having no xlr on the live 2 cause when I'm at home, I just use an audio interface. When OTG recording with live outside makes no sense to me and to set up a mic inside, you still need equipment so using an audio interface there too makes no big difference.
Sounds like I'm hating on the live 2 but in fact I'm so glad I bought it, should have bought it earlier. Dedicated speaker is such a game changer to me and I use it in my bedroom after work late at night for quick sample (and editing them) sessions or I can use it downstairs hooked up to all my synths. makes no difference, same UI and I still got quick acces to all my samples. I only use it in standealone and having a dedicated music making device really helped me to get quickly "into the zone" and just focus listening. the q links and the touchscreen are helping too^^

I put my Program Edit into the left slide menu (I also moved the List Edit and Save to that menu) on my MPC Live 2!

Have you tried opening the force to see what is really wrong with the sata cable? Also it has a drive size limit. If you try something larger than 2tb it may not mount it. I ended up with a 1 tb ssd inside of mine and it does make loading and browsing snappier. Also format the drive using exfat. I would do it from a pc and not try to format it from the force. I noticed that it doesn’t mount none partitioned drives.
I did all of that, drive was 500gigs and works in my MPC live 2
I agree that the combo jacks on the Force are very cool, and one reason that I still consider picking up an MPC X at some point(although I'd really have to find a good used copy, I can't see spending retail unless I win the lottery). I disagree on the headphone jack, however, because any headphones that I'd want to use/trust to make music came with the adapter, and since pretty much all my other gear(mixers, audio interfaces, etc.) use the 1/4" jack, too, the adapter lives on the headphones.
Oh, also: I never really take my Live II out of the house, but I DO make music on the couch fairly often, so I use the battery and speakers quite a bit.
My mpc one is my favorite, gear I ve owned, Roland, korg, boss,etc

One question about the Force : does the fact it has disk streaming eliminates wait/loading time when going through multi-sample based presets like the recent MPC instrument collections ?
I also wonder is that same disk streaming spec allow to crossfade between projects on the Force.
The answer to both of those is no I believe. The instruments load into RAM and you can’t cross fade project loading or queue up projects on any of these boxes yet :(

Just we are not limited by memory to play many long samples simultaneously ? I never could hit that limit on my MPC Live II anyway but Force’s workflow maybe invites to reach that limit.
Yeah basically you could load really long samples like full song stems across a single project and play a whole live set while still using ram for key groups or plugins with samples
thanks for the content. You gave me the scary idea that not all akai force units are a like.... I bought a demo that was on sale as open box. Surely this would not be one of the beta versions that you said we're missing fearures the new units have. These features you mentioned that were originally missing can they be added by updates??? Are all the units the same given they are updated to current software?
All of the units have the same features, the SATA drive on my specific used one was broken, so that is why I mentioned that. Other than that, you can download all firmware updates on the appropriate hardware.

I ahve used Reverb for buying used gear, more than once. Never had a regret AT ALL. I highly recommend them. Just stick to mint and excellent conditions and you'll be fine.
Well, as far as XLR inputs go, both MPCs, (and probably the Force) have the ability to use class-compliant audio interfaces like the Focusrite Scarlet 2i2, so it's not as bad an issue, though the single USB port on the One will be a bit of an annoyance without a powered USB hub.

Had the MPC One but could not get my head around the workflow, so sold it and bought the Maschine Plus.
Fell in love immediately and could make tracks within a week or so...
BUT it broke me. The CPU is F#£KIN' HORRENDOUS!!
It crashed when I scrolled through my sound library. It froze when I turned it in/off. It lost tracks I'd "saved". It maxed out with a simple break loop and single MASSIV pad...
I don't use computers or DAWS so I didn't want to plug into my pc as I bought it for standalone.
My Synthstrom Deluge has never, ever let me down. So, odd looking as it is, I'm sticking with it.

After watched so many videos including yours I’m very confused. I just bought the mpc live 2 and I like it , I’m still figuring everything how it works but I feel like it’s the right degradation lol from pc to dawless. But now I started thinking did I do the right choice , machine+ looks fantastic and I don’t really like massive which is one of the main plugins , because it’s full of stuff I’d never use in my music but it looks like it pushes you to produce more. I really want only one stand alone unit in my studio and please tell me what do you think after spending a lot of time with both of them the live 2 and the machine+ .
I think if you already have the Live 2 it’s worth spending more time with it, learning the effects plugins and maybe picking up the new paid plugins when they go on sale.
It’s very easy to get caught in the loop of the grass is greener with another device. That said if your budget ever allows for both it’s nice to have variety

I have the mpc one and the mk3 , I’m not a stand alone fan but that’s me personally to each it’s own but I like the convenience of my vast plugins on my Mac m1, that makes either device that much more flexible and powerful.
Good overview. I’ve got a little bit obsessed with finding a single box device for writing and recording music (full songs as well as sketches). Just a word of warning about the Force, which would be my choice if not for one crucial failing: it doesn’t support any time signature other than 4/4. There are tricky workarounds that don’t entirely solve the problem, and you can’t have an odd length measure in the middle of a song. If that ever changes, I’ll buy one. The MPCs and the Maschine+ can-according to users on forums-handle different time signatures and the insertion of an odd length measure mid-song.

While the Force is my favorite piece of gear on the list, I would say there are two cons that are worth calling out.
First - it is fairly large and heavy compared to the others. This is fine as a studio piece of gear, but for live performance or just for jamming on the go.
Second (and I believe this applies to the MPC lineup as well) - it has a max of 8 plugin instruments per project. Would love to see that increased. I get it was designed to be a sampler first, but I tend to prefer the plugins.
I definitely should have mentioned the 8 plug-in track limit on the Akai boxes

On the Force, NOT having the ability to use odd meter time signatures (without some goofy, awkward workaround) is kind of a bitch for some of those people who don't just simply consider themselves "podussahs makin' beatz, yo!!"

Price wise the MPC One is the best for starting out, but it’s hard to go wrong with any of them. That said maybe start with something like the Circuit Tracks or Rhythm
I started on MPC 200xl. Fast forward…. I’ve had Maschine Studio-then MK2-now +. I bought a Push2 and sold that to get a Force, sold the Force to get the Live II… Now I have the + and the Live II . I actually make beats on the Laptop & +… I use the Live II when I just want to have fun in standalone around the. However, I just haven’t found a reason to use the MPC with software, I prefer to use Maschine with software. Bottom line it’s all going to boil down to preference & use case. I’ve thought about selling my Live II but I’m over selling my equipment (for the time being)
Definitely agreed on it boiling down to preference and use case! Holding a few pieces of gear at a time can be nice as well for variety (if it’s financially feasible)

Selling my Maschine + and KK MKII to get a MPC keys and replace the plus with a used MKIII:
Result is Maschine MKIII (used$300), MPC Keys, MPC Live II (for mobility)
Currently I have Maschine +, MPC live II, and KK MKII …
Personally I think having two MPCs is a bit redundant although I’ve been super tempted by the keys as well. In general I’ve stopped selling gear for the most part cause I always regret it but if you can get a good price for your plus and don’t need standalone that sale makes sense. Personally I chose the S61 and MPC vs an MPC keys cause I can use the s61 with Maschine and Ableton as well but if you prefer the keys could be the move! I’d say maybe try the keys first before selling the other stuff
I am very interested by the Force BUT I work in logic pro. Can I have access at all the possibility despite that?
Honestly all of these function best as standalone devices that you later export stems out of (in my opinion). The force integrates best with Ableton (but not as well as it could), the MPCs with the MPC software, and the Maschine with the Maschine software but I tend to just export stems out of all of them and finish songs in my daw of choice

My dream device is a maschine with a touch screen, speaker, and basically a powerful computer under the hood that allows us to use komplete plug ins. Idgaf if it’s $4-5k, I’d get it.
Worddd, my dream Maschine Plus 2 or Pro would be basically a macbook pro m1 under the hood with 1tb of storage that could run all of Komplete

MPCs on PC are similar to standalone but with less limitations on vst tracks and clunkier navigation (you can use 3rd party vsts but they don’t map to the screen like the akai ones)
Would you see the MK2 SP404 having a place in this showdown?
It doesn’t have any internal synth engines so it is a bit of a different beast but I think it is an interesting option for sure!
I had a force, however the time stretching wasn't great and samples didnt feel in time, do you have the same problem? not sure if Akai has addressed this in a firmware update
I think it’s just a power of the CPU a limitation compared to a computer. I don’t do a lot of time stretching samples so it hasn’t been a huge issue for me
@@DylanParisMusic Hmm perhaps, not sure if a fair comparison although never had a problem with apps on an old iPad (such as cubasis) I think AKAI must have a dodgy algorithm. Thanks for your response, appreciated!
Worth noting that iPad chips are super powerful as well, my guess is the chips in the Akai boxes are like 1/8th the power of an iPad Pro from 2018
So few of these reviews focus on live looping/live composing. I don't have the patience to make tracks brick-by-brick and prefer to make them in real time.
You likely want something like a boss 404 or 505 looper then

What is the best for live performance and integration with Ableton? Also, what if you already have an APC 40 MKII
I would probably lean towards the Force for live performance although the portability and flexibility of the MPC LIVE 2 makes a strong case as well.
For integration with ableton I would just get a Push 2 or a launchpad Pro mk3 to be honest. These devices do not integrate as smoothly as a push or launchpad, even the Force which seems like it should basically work as a push, doesn't integrate nearly as well.
@@DylanParisMusic I see. Yeah I for a Maschine+ and the APC40. So you're saying a Force would be better. I've just been so used to using the Maschine for production I can't imagine not using it.
@@trigger858 Maschine Plus is great too, especially if you know the workflow and just want standalone. Depending on the Maschine you currently have you might just want a laptop though. I do personally enjoy the standalone elements of the plus enough to endorse it though. i'm not sure it would be my top pick for live performance but Fred Again uses one I think and he rules.
The only feature I want from the Force is the disk streaming. I don’t care for Ableton like workflow and I own Ableton Live 11 Standard. I only use it for mixing and mastering. I’d use a workstation keyboard for song creation before using Ableton Live or the Force. MPC all the way. My “Ultimate device” is probably a Kurzweil K2700, Yamaha Genos, or Korg Pa5X but can get a lot done with a MPC.

Things that made go 'I'm sorry, what?'
1. 1/8 headphone jacks, as a person that's dropped the cash for a force, doing the same with headphones is a no brainer
2. Devices crashing? I'm anti-daw because of the word crash, my hardware doesn't(mc707/force/mpclive 1/peak), if it does, it's garbage.
3. I looked at the mpc instruments collection, that should be free for force/mpc, in no way would I give them a dollar for that. I'm sure they wanted you to mention it, the nature of it is so superfluous, it would only be greedy plugin daw junkies that bite.
4. Decent vid, but you spend more time on how something looks than I ever would, but I'm genx, function over form, so it might be generational. i would have preferred the vid hitting the hard lines of function, comparisons between the units, and save the 'my goodneth thith is the prettieth-t one for last so I could skip it.

I purchased an MK 3 in December. I cant get it to work on my 24” iMac M1. Only pads 9 through 16 work. I’ve been going back and forth with NI. They keep tossing me around to different people. Not being able to have a conversation sucks.

Imo if you’re making mostly sampled based hip hop beats there’s nothing that’s going to beat the mpc live or mpc one…I own a mk2 and mk3 and they just collect dust. The mpc live 2 is my favorite item I’ve ever owned in my life it’s a wonderful machine. Probably the best drum machine sampler ever made.

I feel you I love my Mpc live retro, but bro I bought a analoge rythm which led to a syntak which led to the analoge heat which led to my octatrack and I hate to say it but my live just stays charged in my back pack for trips. Electron has changed the game for me. The sound is so warm and beautiful the workflow allows me to go deep in creativity with precision. If you a gear head like myself I recommend it if you haven't already. 🙏 peace

Which has better swing? Maschine or mpc?
I don’t use swing very much so I am not the best to ask, but when it comes to quantizing I really like the default hardware 50% shortcut on the Maschine. Let’s the midi still sound human but fixes some errors with very little work
I like them all. I think Maschine+ is the one that needs a major update. Re-do the user interface, upgrade processor and memory by a lot so that any & all NI plugins/expansions can run stand alone. Call it something like Maschine Studio or Maschine Pro & sell for around $1,200 - $1,600.
I can see the appeal in the Force too. What held me back from Force were a fair amount of complaints I read about weird noises when recording external audio. I'm not sure if that's still true but I record a lot of external audio.
I own Live 2 and love it. The MPC work flow comes pretty easy to me and I enjoy it. It felt a little lacking when I first got it with only stock sounds. Once I got Fabric XL, Studio Strings & Piano, OpX4, expansions, custom multi-layered realistic instrument samples, and tons of my own external gear autosampled & saved to my SD card it became my portable DAW in a box. The Live 2 itself or Garageband/Logic/FL are the only things I record in to lately.
If anyone is reading and can't afford any of the options from the video, there's some great apps for your phone/pad. Flip Sampler, Koala Sampler, and Bandlab are all cheap but great, functional music making/recording apps.
There's something out there for every budget and skill level these days. ✌️

Is a small headphone jack really "right" for every musician? I would have thought the opposite tbh unless you're sticking earbuds in or something
About 90 percent or more of the wired headphones I’ve used are 1/8th jack and include a 1/4 adapter if necessary. I don’t believe I’ve actually ever had a pair with the opposite configuration
This includes all of the IEMs I've tested and even my high end Shure SRH 1540s I use for my pro work
design is better on MPC One but I want the portability of MPC Live.

Considering the MPC One because of the price and I/O is so good almost future proof for me, just never had an MPC so skeptical of if the workflow will suit me, I’m still new to using electronics programming and lean more towards synth playing and really just want something solid for drum programming that’s hands on and potentially could use it for performances…I would be moving away from using the polyend tracker which I will miss but I feel like it’s not for what I want to do as it’s too sample based and not really performance based, do you think MPC One would be a better sampler for me, a person that’s more of a synth player rather than sequencing all my music? Thanks for watching! You may enjoy the MPC more than the tracker, especially with its internal synths and keygroups. It’s a bit of a programmy device but not nearly as much as the tracker is and you can easily live play in any part you want
I just wonder why Akai made the pads smaller than their standard size on the MPC One 🤕
I think to save overall space for the smaller device, similar to the MPC Key 61

@@DylanParisMusic I just ordered volca sample 2 it’s on sale for 109 $ kinda wondering 💭 how it will hold up low fi style not a proper sampler more a sample player, but has a unique sound . Sometimes the MPC sounds to clean that’s why I really like their air flavor pro . I think it’s worth every penny.

Not sure I would call any of them “beginner”. It’s just a tool to make music. I’ve had a couple of placements using MPC one. I say whatever works for you. Nothing is beginner, it’s just a tool to get your ideas laid down the way you want.
I mostly mean cost as a barrier to entry, but yeah I definitely don’t mean “only for beginners” so fair callout! I could have worded that differently

To me the most important problem with NI hardware products it's life duration, specially if you use them extensively. I already have 3 Mashines and none of them has last more than 4 or 5 years. Each time it ended with pads problems witch you'll never get with akai MPC or Force samplers. I have a Force now and I really love it, it's the central piece of gear on my studio now
I haven’t experienced any of those issues yet but I haven’t owned any of this gear that long. That said, it seems hard to know the lifespan of the current Akai devices would be guaranteed to be longer given none of them have been out for 5 years
@@DylanParisMusic Sorry but Akai are doing Pad samplers since the 80's, they have far more experience in that field than NI
You can still found on the market Akai MPC from the 80's with pads still functioning. Try to use a Maschine MKI now a days and you'll see what I'm talking about
and a Maschine MKI is just 10 years old...
I definitely believe your experiences with past devices are legit I would just caution against assuming that the newer devices from any manufacturer are built to old school specs. It seems like more than ever all things are made with planned obsolescence in mind

Maybe someday! It's a pretty different device with no internal synth engines, mono sample playback, no internal sampling. But it looks neat!

Ugh, another comparison video that doesn't include an actual opinion. Yes, we can all look up which one has a SATA drive or a speaker, that's not helpful at all. It would be so much more helpful to hear which you personally prefer and why. Otherwise this is just the usual features list with some commentary. And yes I know it depends on what someone's preferences are but I watched this to find out YOUR opinion. Watching a comparison video that ends with "it's up to you" is such a cop-out. Unfortunate because you're very well informed and a lot of your videos are really great.

Do not buy the MPC One+ if you plan on working with audio tracks. It's got a bug that makes it super tedious.
The bug is that when you are looping a section of an audio track and laying down drums for just that section, then when you move the loop to the next section THE UI ZOOMS YOU ALL THE WAY OUT.
So then you have to zoom all the way back in and hunt for the place where you were working. It's SOOOO frustrating. I gave up on it. I don't use the MPC anymore and went back to Ableton.
Also, it wont let you continuously overdub on an audio track. The recording stops as soon as it gets to the end of the loop. ( At least the Maschine has its 'take' mode which looks wonderful.)
The built in drum samples are pretty bad. Hardly any of them sound like real drums.
The Bassline synth is awful. None of the presets sound like a real bass guitar.
I work with off rhythm audio tracks that this awesome blues guitarist sends to me to put drums on but the MPC is so bad that it's just unusable for my workflow.
I was thinking of buying a Maschine but I'm not sure it can loop over any arbitrary section of an audio track while I lay down beats. I have not seen a convincing demo.

Haven't had a Roland device since I sold my MC-707 (definitely regret selling it). If they drop something new and cool I'll definitely check it out!
well that was stupid of Native instruments to make a stand alone device but think people will still want to be attached to the computer to do more deep editing of instruments if that was a thought of theirs
I think it was more that because it started with 3 generations of hybrid devices they have a foundation that makes it hard to rewrite from the ground up. That said I let them know a GUI overhaul for the plugins would be my most requested feature
