    Description Source:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin_Cobra
    Twin Cobra, released in Japan as Kyukyoku Tiger (究極タイガー Kyūkyoku Taigā?), is a 1987 helicopter-themed shoot 'em up arcade game developed by Toaplan. It was published by Taito Corporation in Japan, and by Romstar in North America, and is one of Toaplan's most popular arcade games. It is a spiritual sequel to Tiger-Heli, and is itself followed by Twin Cobra II.
    Ports:
    Twin Cobra was later ported to the NES, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, PC Engine and the Sharp X68000. The NES version was developed by Micronics, published by CBS Sony in Japan and by American Sammy in North America. The Genesis/Mega Drive version was developed by GRC, published by Treco in Japan and by Sega in North America. The PC Engine version was ported by Taito exclusively in Japan. It was also added to Toaplan Shooting Battle 1, a collection of Toaplan's shoot 'em ups that also includes Tiger Heli, as well as some arranged music; however, the collection was released exclusively in Japan for the Sony PlayStation. The arcade game's most recent platform it was ported to were mobile phones. A port for Samsung's Smart TV platform is also available through a Samsung TV's games panel.

    The best thing about any version of Twin Cobra is the music. The first stage theme is so amazing, on the Mega Drive especially.

      The sound on the PC Engine is way closer to the arcade than the Mega Drive. I find the FM implementation like it is played on steel drums.

      I think the PC Engine version sounds better than both. The FM versions sound like the lead guitar is played on a harp cladded in tin cans. And the popping balloon sound if you shoot something is highly annoying on the MD.

    I loved this game in the arcade! The fully powered up red weapon was just sick. I wanted this for NES but got Twin Eagle another helicopter shooter by mistake.

    Other differences besides checkpoints between the arcade versions of Twin Cobra and Kyukyoku Tiger:
    -Kyukyoku Tiger has stricter extra life scores (70k then every 200k instead of Twin Cobra's 50k then ever 150k)
    -Kyukyoku Tiger has no option for 2 players
    -Twin Cobra has a limit of 3 shots on screen at once, Kyukyoku Tiger's limit is 4
    -The helicopter colors are different (Twin Cobra 1p side is red, 2p side is blue, Kyukyoku Tiger is silver. Also worth noting, the Twin Cobra title screen still has the Kyukyoku Tiger helicopter on it)
    I think Kyukyoku Tiger also has slightly faster enemy bullets and a slightly slower movement speed but I'm not certain.

    The genesis/mega drive version does not have the shot sound effects. Only the bomb and enemies exploding(with a lot of bass). This is not a demerit, but a benefit instead, because you can listen this magnificent soundtrack. Better than arcade in my opinion.

    The NES version is trying it's best with the music but damn they could have taken it down an octave to not be so ear piercing. A truly important game, it set the standard for vertical scrolling shmups to follow.

      They also nailed the graphics. I think it is really well done within the limitations, easily beating the Mega Drive on graphics.

    Most ports on Twin Cobra are great. But I prefer the Sega genesis version because it offers an ending and its much closer to the arcade version in my opinion. I'm glad that game I own is built inside the 112 in 1 Sega genesis cartilage.

    • @lovemadeinjapan
      @lovemadeinjapan Před 6 dny

      I think it is behind the PC Engine by a huge margin. There are 4 things unacceptable on the MD version: The yellow tanks. What the heck were they thinking? The balloon pop sound when you shoot an enemy. This is no Bubble Shooter. Third is the lead part of the sound track. It sounds like it is recorded from a metal-spring bed frame or something. Last nuisance is the price. For 1 boxed MD cartridge, you can buy 3 PC Engine ones.

    The Mega Drive port is fantastic when it comes to gameplay (dat AI), music (awesome), level layout accuracy (arcade perfect), content & also some great SFX but on other hand 2 issues: the half crappy take-off SFX (beginning is bad, 2nd half is good) & the way colors are handled which is kinda weird & leads to a few questionable results (the gold plated tanks lol). Overall a bit frustrating because it could have been a stellar port with just a few tweaks but still, as it is, it's very good (& better than its PC Engine counterpart) & worth owning for the improved AI & the dope soundtrack.

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 Před 7 lety

      BTW there's an enhanced Mega Drive version around, didn't check it much but apparently it mainly fixes some of the weird colors choices.

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 Před 7 lety

      Oh &, no tate option on X68000 or FM Towns? (pretty sure there's one on FM Towns, or maybe it was Raiden...) If so my order would be:
      X68000 < Mega Drive (the AI & audio make up for some of the weird colors choices) < FM Towns < PlayStation (which seems arcade perfect with tate option & some (rather good) rearranged music (even though I prefer the original, more authentic arrangements)).

    • @pjomayo
      @pjomayo Před 7 lety +1

      Disagree.The Megadrive version lacks the secret weapon (the heat seeker bullets) and the extra lives and bombs cheat you can do in game.

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 Před 7 lety

      I know for that weapon but don't care much about it. But what's this cheat about? The MD port also has extra bombs/lives just IIRC less bombs (& also maybe less lives) than on PCE (which is not necessary a bad thing).
      & on other hand the PCE port:
      - doesn't have an options menu
      - lacks many hidden stars (some of them are still here but not hidden anymore which is not as fun)
      - lacks the increasing score as you shoot enemies which require more than one hit to die, especially bad vs the bosses
      - has less good AI

  • @2kBofFun
    @2kBofFun Před rokem +1

    The PC Engine version is best considering the platform it ran on and the price of a true cartridge today. It is near arcade perfect, and wipes the floor with the Mega Drive version with its horrible FM soundtrack (why could nobody get anything decent out of that sound chip?), loud mixed explosions and horrible sprites/colour (tangerine tanks).
