Description Source:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yie_Ar_K...
Yie Ar Kung-Fu (イー・アル・カンフー Ī Aru Kanfū) is a 1985 fighting game developed and published by Konami, considered by some in Japan to be the basis for modern fighting games.
Yie Ar Kung-Fu (Chinese: 一二功夫; pinyin: yī èr gōngfū; literally: "One Two Kung Fu") features the protagonist Oolong (Chinese: 烏龍; pinyin: Wūlóng, Japanese: ウーロン Ūron; see oolong), controlled by the player. Oolong must fight all the martial arts masters given by the game (11 in the arcade version; five to 13 in the home ports) unarmed to win the title of "Grand Master" and honor the memory of his father. On his side is a variety of punch and kick blows reachable by combining the joystick with one of the buttons (punch or kick). He also has the greatest jumping ability of all the game's fighters, with the exception of "Blues".
The player faces a variety of opponents, each with a unique appearance and fighting style. The player can perform up to 16 different moves, using a combination of buttons and joystick movements while standing, crouching or jumping. Moves are thrown at high, middle, and low levels. Regardless of the move that defeated them, male characters (save Feedle) always fall unconscious lying on their backs with their legs apart (players flail their feet), and female characters always fall demurely lying on their sides. Feedle disappears. There are only two female fighters, and the rest are male. When a player gains an extra life, the word "xiè xiè" (Mandarin for "thank you") is heard.

Feels like the Lee-Wang games are a completely different game from the Oolong-Buchu ones.
One thing that always sorta disturbed me was this. In the arcade The fighters were named after their weapon. Pole, star, nunchuck, chain, so on & so forth. But the 1st character in the MSX version is named wang. umm what's He fighting you with ?
His personality. V:
Wang is a chinese name. Derp
Lyu Kang And wang in America is another word for penis. Derpa derp !
His pole.lol
wingnut4427 no shit, sherlock
The ORIGINAL 1 on 1 fighter! You purists can have Karate Champ.
I played the MSX version sooooo much. Over and over again the same opponents who were getting more difficult up to level 15, after that the challenge was gone. I played until level 90 and then i had to quit because my mother was getting angry as they were waiting with dinner :)
Played the msx version as well and it was a lot of fun. The music was fantastic as well.
Amstrad looks and sounds the best of the 3 Usual Suspects Suspects ie spectrum Commodore
C64 had that awesome intro theme.
great version of Jarre music
Looks like there were two entirely different games. The Amstrad version was tremendous, spent many happy hours hammering people's faces in on this!
Good version
I'm sure glad I did not get an Acorn Electron for 80's Christmas time!
I'm laughing my ass off because Star wasn't even throwing her ninja stars in the ZX Spectrum version. Lmao they did you so wrong Star! Graphical limitations are hilarious!
LOL...and it would take years and a 32-bit gaming system before we got the actual music and sound effects (especially the "gong") right for a home edition.
Kids today don't know how good they got it, heh heh
I never passed this arcade without playing in my life.
The Amstrad version was the best
No, the best conversion was clearly C64. Not ist's fault, the makers of the video hat a defective Joystick.
You guys are both wrong. The best version is that for Famicom/NES. And this is the fact
@@alnikur87 Still, the ZX spectrum and Amstrad versions are pretty close in quality.
@@alnikur87 Well, that's just like your opinion, man!
It's my first Nes/Famicom game, along with Mach Rider!
Had this for the C64. Great game.
C64 version really stands out to me... gameplay, music and fx ... plus it’s faster than the arcade
yeah, too bad about the speed of the C64 version. It really lets the game down
the konami lost the timming to create a great franshising of fighting games with this.
Well, what about Yer Kung Fu 2??? It was awesome
You mean you've never played Super Yie Ar Kung Fu 2 Turbo Arcade Champion Edition?
This was one of the first arcade games I ever played. I had no idea it was ported to so many systems outside of NES back then. I'm always amazed at how many ports completely eluded me despite all the Gaming magazine subs I had. I just remember this game being hard as fuck.
+Pimphand Gamester I remember this game just being total trash. Everything just felt off and awkward as hell in it.
+walmartian555 I always found it very easy. Completed it in no time at all.
walmartian555 Well it's not like I had a ton of games to compare it to back then ya know and I was like 9 yrs old with this being the first arcade game I ever played if not THE first game I ever played period. I didn't have a console for a few years later.
ya it was hard tonfa was harder then blues sometimes to me awhile and alot of quarters
This was great. It was great to see the other versions. I played the MSX version and its sequel years ago.
Thank you for your vids. Good luck with the new job.
I had this game for C-64, once, in my childhood...
I'm still very fond of the Acorn Electron version. I think it's a solid effort (despite the clashing sprites and farting sound effects).
The MSX/Famicom version
should've been *Yie Ar Kung Fu I.*
The Arcade version should've been released later on as *Yie Ar Kung Fu II.*
And Konami's Martial Champion (1993)
should've been *Yie Ar Kung Fu III.*
If I ever buy a stand up arcade game, it will be this one! Arcade version is the best. Pumped many quarters into this game as a kid
Same here, I wish I could find one that is working and buy it.
This brings back fond memories of fighting games like Way of the Exploding Fist and International Karate+. It's amazing what you could do with one button in those days ha!
Here's something hilarious i just found out about this game now from playing it on MAME: if you hit Buchu in JUST the right spot in the crotch while he's kicking, his pupils will dilate and he'll say "NI HAO!!" (Chinese for "HELLO!!") I have yet to know whether this works on any other characters or any other versions of the game. (i don't think it happens in the gba version though, cause i played that one to death before and never saw it) I also have no idea if many other people know about this, but I'm gonna try and record it happening because i don't think there is any video footage of it on CZcams.
Buchu is the only one that it works on. Don't know about the other versions.
You also get a 2000 point bonus for doing it to him too. lol
This is the game that got me hooked on video games...
The Coleco version really surprises me in terms of quality.
Shouldn't surprise you. The Colecovision was a pretty capable machine. This was a home brew version. Look up OpCode Donkey Kong if you want to see what the Colecovision was really capable of. You'll be shocked !
+Gaming History Source if you want to see what the colecovision WASN'T capable of. OPCode games uses their own expansion module that has a better video card, a RAM expansion and maybe a secondary sound chip
and i heard they are also making a Colecovision 2 with the expansion module incorporated and maybe a few other enhancements IDK
+MarioKart7z I'm aware of it. I've been fallowing it for quite some time. But expansion or not you have to admit. It's extremely impressive U demonstrates what the colecovision could do if properly utilized.
+Gaming History Source
Their Donkey Kong port is great. But the majority of the games are just straight MSX games ported to run in the ColecoVision hardware. So basically what you're seeing is an MSX1.
@@TheLoveMario That isn’t exactly true. The Super Game Module only adds more RAM and a second sound chip. CPU and graphics are still stock ColecoVision.
You can attack Star's stars and they will not hurt you.
I love this game. Played it with my friend as a kid on his C64 then many years later I was happy as hell to get it on the PS1.
7:55 - so funny sounds)))))Wow! This orchestral version of music is so great!)
Yie Ar Kung-Fu is a great classic. I played the C64 version to the death. I'm looking forward to the Let's Compare of Yie Ar Kung-Fu 2 ;-)
Amstrad one will always be my favourite version
ola gostei muito da comparação. parabens pelo video.
4:25 When Buchu flies across the screen his body is virtually swallowed up by background clash. VERY bad indeed!
as a kid back then in 1988..."wtf is this game, so damn hard to control!!"....but i still play it...
I only played the Famicom/NES version of this game, when I discover what the actual Arcade version is like, I'm really surprised how different it is compared to the Famicom version. Can someone explain to me why the Famicom, MSX, Colecovision, and GameBoy etc are so different compared to the rest of the versions of the game? It can't be just limitations, everything is wierdly changed. The music, the background is just a dojo background(not different variety of backgrounds like Arcade version), character's names, it's only cut to 4 fighters. I mean I love the Famicom version of this game, I'm just confused why it turned out the way it did rather than be like it's Arcade counterpart.
It's been 30 years and Konami never made a Y.A.K.F. remake...
The closest we got is the version released on Xbox Live Arcade.
I remember when my friend let me borrow one of those bootlegged cartridges that had a bunch of games.
This was the best game on there
Two different games by the look of it, the one with oolong was my spectrum version and the BEST!!!
Never knew there was two version lol wish the Genesis version had updated look like Xbox live one but the past let's emerge both oolong and Lee fight the pad guys thanks for the upload
懐かしい
sweet old memory
C64 version is tight!
The ZX Spectrum version is the later Spectrum 128K version, the sound on the original 48K Spectrum version was far far worse, as the computer only had the ability to make beeping noises where you could specify the tone and the length of the note
6:55 Star kicked his ass and then "Control is so loose... ...Impossible to play".
Heheh :)
Consider the different versions. Control schemes. Programming liberties some developers took. Consider the emulators & programming set up for the system. Each & every one of them handled & felt different. There was a very distinctive difference between the commodore 64 version & the others. Try it yourself & You'll see.
I can confirm that the controls were a nightmare on c64. You some how get used to it on the long run. Loved the game
Best port ever...
Maxed out score on arcade by kicking stars for an hour.
Yep I remember that hitting sounds from my bootleg nes
C64 version was actually pretty good. I played it all the time.
I'm still trying to understand if two versions of the game exist for the C64, like Bionic Commando and Street Fighter.
Star looks like a bloke in some versions. Not just that, but like... an edit of Oolong.
WOW brings back memories! How far we have come back in old arcade days, arcade parlour 1990, in melbourne at carribean markets in wantirna i think had a mini ridable train went around the markets .. Plus had POW, elevator, pengu, ghouls nbghosts far out man .. To think in my lifetime i have seen the start of primitive gaming and to where it is now the evolution, the ideas of games and consoles has onle really happened in last 25 years or so ... Felt like yeaterday
Oh and Wonder Boy, MatbMania etc etc
Future videos will be coming slower than normal. I start My new job tomorrow. I wish I could make this My full time job but I need a lot of subscribers & even more views. So I don't see that happening for a LOOOONG time. lol
I will be doing more of the Video art scans soon as well. I hope that You guys continue to enjoy these videos & this channel for years to come. If you like the music in the beginning, a link can be found in the description.
Why is the MSX/Saturn and more so different to the Arcade? Never realised that. CPC version is tops! But I would say that. Thanks for the info the other day btw mate. Helped out a lot. Cheers.
Saturn version is a MSX compilation. :)
Glad it helped :D
Amstrad CPC was very close to the arcade, definitely the best amongst the big three 8-bit computers. Then again, the CPC was at most everything. Had one since mid 80s, Dizzy, Ghost Hunters, Head over Heals, Game Over, Gryzor. Awesome machine.
Ha, you should check my channel. Full of Amstrad love. :)
thesomething79 That's why it ranked 7th for me. Fantastic port.
The protagonist's name is 「Lee Oolong」(李烏龍)
Yie Ar Kung Fu 2 inside the 「Lee Young」(李詠) Is his son
This game was also released on Playstation Home (you could buy an arcade cabinet of it). But sadly, PS Home has ended/died.
Back in the day I didnt know this was out on the Electron, and its not a bad effort really.
nostalgia
I loved the MSX version, but I admit it's pretty different to the arcade.
was the acorn electron the same as the BBC B version? we had it on BBC B and I seem to remember it being in blue/black monochrome, but with much smoother and faster movement than the electron version here. could be remembering it wrong though. can't find any BBC B footage to check...
Had fun playing it on the C64
Funny about the control of the C64 giving you fits--I could beat the c64 version, but could never beat Tonfa on the arcade version.
I remember the c64 version looking pretty good, but looking at it now, it hasn't aged very well. Rose-colored glasses and all that.
Nice video; but you didn't show the BBC Micro version. It was very similar to the Electron version but with better sounds and a few minor tweaks (as most Beeb versions generally were).
I did ok in this in the Arcades. But it became old so fast lol.
Where did you get the version of the fight theme that starts at 0:05 and ends at 0:47? It was a lovely rendition.
It's in a clickable annotation at the end.
Thank you kind sir!
I'd like to see a compare of Dr. Doom's Revenge eventually.
the NES version is the one I enjoy the most playing, flying kicks are awesome
This is street fighter before it was born..
seems strange now,how it took so long from no1arcade to same thing no12 gameboy advance... I used to nail this game in the arcade when young, and kung fu master and karate champ :) sooooo many 10p`s happy memories
+hill mott all 28yrs ago
Fat guy flying is like Raiden. Lol
I think Buchu is named after Abdullah the Butcher...he sure looks like him
the acorn electron was the best version....loved that game....

"The power of emulators ladies and gentlemen" -Armake21
Yup. Might need to update it. But 95% of what You see on this channel is emulation & I have never hidden that fact. In fact ! It's on my channel description.
Lol, Famicom/NES just got its ass handed to it by a fucking COLECOVISION
Best this on the C64 when I was a kid. Not easy.
the arcade version was the best i beat this game at the skating ring when i was like 7 or 8 i had to use certain moves on tonfa and the boss blues i swear his name was bruce or lee when i was a kid i found the one move from the arcade game instructions on the cabinet were it shows all the moves u can do, the move i used to do especially if u get him caught in the corner is this split type punch with 2 hands i think, he does some shit like Jean-Claude Van Damme in blood sport got to hit and run and spam the split move i loved doing it to the fat guy in the first round punching him in the nuts and his eyes pop out and get big lmao great game took me a long time to beat that game
I love the GBA & PS1 versions.
In the MSX version wang fights you with a stick
The best Buchu in zx spectrum version
The C64 version has to win, soley on Martin Galway's title music?
Just a thought,but isn't it rather awesome.....
+nikamota So random XD
+Azumarill_TF2 Don't even remember making that comment..must have been the Merlot...XD
Actually the music is not an original from Galway but rather the SID version of Jean Michel Jarre's Magnetic Fields Part 4.
No BBC micro? That version was awesome!
C64 version is great. Nothing wrong with the controls in my opinion.
I remember Pole being super hard there because they would lock you in to slamming your big toe and just drain all your health.
The video uploader is just salty from losing.
I got my nes with 3 games, one of them was written "kung fu" and i was fuck yeah, i want to play this one first. Never understood why the nes version was that different form the arcades
What went wrong with Nintendo DS version??!
Why did the background and characters and their names change?
The speed of the MSX isn't quite right. The Coleco and Sega Saturn version is MSX at real speed.
Let's compare Galaga from Namco :D
They didn't have a good Port of this game until the Game Boy Advance. Is this the first arcade fighter type game?
the sega saturn and Genesis versions could be better.
Only "Arcade" and "C64" are be has more senses than "Famicom/NES".
I always prefer the MSX version.
Ahh c'mon... these are all emulated :)
+midinerd yes. I've never hidden that fact. ;)
Con este juego entrenaba Alfredo adame
Always loved the cover of this game, such a epic picture, remember when it came out when i was a kid and saw a massive poster of it in a shop advertising it thinking that looks bad ass! right up there with the Renegade and Green Beret cover.
www.giantbomb.com/images/1300-2258112
The c64 version was amazing.
Actually it was horrible. Just the music is amazing.
It depends on how fast you are. It's not too fast for me, so I consider it the best version.
Wasnt there a NES or Master System version too?
I don't know about Master System, but Famicom is Japanese NES, which mean it never release outside Japan.
@@Takato2527 If we had a North American NES version of this game it'd've looked similar to the arcade version.
I used to load up the C64 version just to hear Martin Galway's frigging amazing intro tune.

PLEASE Anybody getting screen glitches only on the GBA section????
Why did so many home versions use the dojo background instead of the waterfall one?
My guess would be because of a limited color pallet on these systems.
Gaming History Source The NES, Saturn and Genesis didn't have limited palettes though. They could have easily done the waterfall scene. I think even the MSX and Colecovision could have handled it. Strange.
lurkerrekrul Here is a very interesting article along those lines. NES could have been so much more than it was if it weren't for processing & memory limitations.
Gaming History Source Back when the NES came out in the US, I was still using my C64. My friend had one and I thought that some of the games looked like a step up from what I had. Looking at the games now, I'm surprised by how many of them I dislike. Many games used bland colors and had similar tinny music. The strange part is that I don't feel the same way looking at other old systems, only the NES.
Also, the same (about being so much more) could be said about a lot of systems. If the designers had been given a little more time to work out the bugs, the C64 wouldn't have been saddled with such a slow disk drive. If they had spent just a little more money and connected the upper bits of its color memory, it could have displayed more colors closer together without programming tricks. If Commodore hadn't been staffed by arrogant, greedy idiots after Jack Tramiel left, they wouldn't bungled the handling of the Amiga so badly. If Tramiel hadn't canned all the projects at Atari to work on the ST line when he took over, the 7800 might have had a chance. :(
+Gaming History Source "What if the NES had a 5.12 MHz processor and 1 MB of RAM?" and "What if the SNES had a 7.68 MHZ processor and 3 MB of RAM of which 1 MB is dedicated for the sound chip?" that's the questions we all have... some1 needs to make a NES 2 and a SNES 2 like OPCode games is making a Colecovision 2...
And i played this back in 2005 and this one game im looking for indont remember it wws an army gane
Surprised the Genesis version was so shitty looking. Hell, it almost looks like something a Colecovision could pull off.
