Ghosts 'n Goblins (魔界村 Makaimura?, "Demon World Village"), alternative spelling Ghost'n Goblins, is a 1985 side-scrolling platforming game developed by Capcom for video arcades and has since been released on several other platforms. It is the first game in the Ghosts 'n Goblins franchise.
Gameplay
Ghosts 'n Goblins is a platform game where the player controls a knight, named Sir Arthur, who must defeat zombies, ogres, demons, cyclops, dragons and other monsters in order to rescue Princess Prin Prin, who has been kidnapped by Satan, king of Demon World. Along the way the player can pick up new weapons, bonuses and extra suits of armor that can help in this task.
The game is often considered very difficult by arcade standards and is commonly regarded as one of the most difficult games ever released. The game is considered by Gametrailers.com to be the world's second most difficult game ever made. The player can only be hit twice before losing a life (the first hit takes away Arthur's armor, and the player must continue on in his underwear until completing the level, or finding replacement armor). If the player loses a life, he is returned to the start of the level, or the halfway point if he has managed to get that far. Furthermore, each life can only last a certain length of time (generally around three minutes), the clock being reset at the start of a level. If the clock does run out, the player instantly loses that life.
After defeating the final boss, but only with the cross weapon (if the player does not have the cross weapon, they will be prompted that it is needed to defeat the boss and restart at the beginning of level 5 and must repeat round 5 and 6 again regardless if the weapon is obtained immediately or not) for the first time the player is informed that the battle was "a trap devised by Satan". The player is then forced to replay the entire game on a higher difficulty level before finally reaching the genuine final battle.

I like the AMSTRAD music...
"get the knife. get the knife. GET THE KNIFE!"
To me, the Commodore 64 versjon will always be a classic. With it's unique scary music, and with the scream that red devil seems to make when you cross it's path. I don't think the graphics are too bad compared to the NES versjon either...
+Atle Kristiansen yeah I totally dig the C64's music too. Finally someone agrees with me. It is scary.
BOOZE & METAL I agree. The music certainly makes the C64 version, but the graphics are just as serviceable. This is the kind of argument you could make in general about games, i.e. technical vs. artistic. The C64 graphics seemed more "alive" to me.
BOOZE & METAL The sprites are a lot bigger on the c64
there's an unofficial improved version that contains everything from the original game
Yeah I had that one.....loved it
Ghosts'n Goblins is an instant classic. And there so many great versions. I'll try out the GBC and the Amstrad version. Besides C64, NES and Arcade the Amiga version is really outstanding.
GBC is NES with better music
+MrVenom1974 the only great versions for me were Arcade > Windows > Amiga > Atari ST > C64/128
the NES version suffers from bad sound and stiffer controls
NES Ghosts n Goblins had crappy (shitty) graphics (visuals)
+Ryan Joseph William Mayleas the GBC version of Ghosts n Goblins also had better graphics (visuals)
The Amiga version appears to the best remake in several games you demo. I still own mine and it still boots. :)
Amiga Ghosts n Goblins is or seems more like a conversion (port) than a remake because the audio, graphics, music, sound, visuals, aren’t nor weren’t updated
The Gameboy Color version is a hidden gem, and also one of it's best versions, they lowered the dificulty a bit, and while still hard, it's not as brutal as the NES version. They also added passwords which is amazing
The music from the DOS version should have its own dance remix
ultimate ghost and goblins its a different game!
They just wanted an excuse to show people the game I guess.
Go home Dos version, you're drunk.
I was amused no end by the PSP version. It just sums up modern games compared to 20 years ago!
The PSP version feels the need to tell an epic story about the struggle between demons and knights, while the original just gives you "girl kidnapped by devil. SAVE HER!!"
The Amiga rocked back in the day, every game port looked amazing.
The c64 version was amazing as I played it , yes the Amiga version by elite systems limited was super.
"Every game port looked amazing." Lol the Amiga was home to some of the worst ports of its time. Check out Out Run, Street Fighter II, or Bionic Commando on the Amiga. Great games turned into pure ass by shovelware developers. There were good games on the Amiga, but most of these were games that had been developed for the platform. Most (not all) arcade ports were terrible.
@Lumumba B. Can you send me the new c64 file , I can use on my c64 mini console pc
@@Jayce_Alexander not true at all... Take a look at toki, super hang on, silkworm, rodland, pang, snow bros, pacmania, just to name a few
@@jimkromwhat was bad or good about those Amiga arcade ports?
The zombies hair animation in the St version is very nice (it gives them a sense of faster dynamic) and it misses even in the arcade counterpart. :-|
The Amiga port is definitely one of the fewest arcade perfects or so of its entire library. :)
Amiga Ghosts n Goblins might've looked arcade perfect but it wasn't
perfect in the audio it had different music and missing sound effects
The music in the PSP version sounds like it's from a Tim Burton movie.
lol
thumbs up if you played original GnG on arcades back then.
I used to get over a million points on the arcade version back then, doubt I could do it today lol.
LeShark75
Awesome. I doubt I can do it now on mame.
yup.. this game will break your cherry .. And your heart ... and your sanity ... and piggy bank :(
I was born on 2012 (using my dads account) but i'm a retro gamer.
The music from the the Amstrad version sounded like it invented dubstep
Bellissimo video!!! La versione per commodore plus4 è un vero cessò!!
Love it. Takes me back.
It sucks when you accidentally pick up the damn torch weapon!
nahh ... what sucks is when it doesn't vanish like everything else.
Gaming History Source where can I get the windows version?

thanks
No problem ! Enjoy ! found it to be a bit fidgity ... but you may enjoy it. :)
I have the C64 music of GNG carved in my mind. I played it A LOT back in the day!
I always thought only the C64 version had different music, but the Amstrad version also has a unique composition. Interesting!
Another interesting thing was to see that the DOS version is flick screen instead of a side scroller. I've always loved the flick screen style in games and watching GnG as a flick screen game was fascinating.
well IBM PCs don't have hardware sprites and scrplling (at least they didn't in the days of DOS)
Commodore 64 soundtrack was awesome :)
+spacecoke +1 And this version is the best of gameplay too!
no, it was too difficult, Amiga wins because it's virtually perfect. The c64 as usual is plagued with collision detection issues.
Thank you, finally!
I kind of dug the music in the Amstrad version.
That was one of the prettiest (and the toughest games) of the 80s! I remember seeing it on its arcade version but I was too young and they wouldn't let me play. So my first gameplay was on my Amstrad CPC 464! Great game!
C64 Music FTW
C64 version always had my favorite music, Tim Follin made an amazing set of tracks for it.
One of my favourite games, though as nails. Played the C64 and NES versions the most but it is cool to see it got a ton of ports on other systems too.
My favorite as a kid was the Amstrad version (6128) but for some reason this one here looks and sounds a bit different.
The ST version feels like it is running on a faster machine.. I don't remember ever being that fast.
The PS2 version looks fantastic.
Great video.
Great video!
The ZX Spectrum version is the definitive version. The two color pallet, lack of music and sound effects that sound like the game is farting (as if it knows it's shit) will go down in history as the best version of the game ever. It blows the arcade version out of the water.
the Commodore 16 blows the Spectrum version out the water
I was about to yell WTF, that's not C64 graphics!! Then realized it was C16.
Great vid bud.
i like these comparisons but i sure wish that you would do one on a whole game
considering how long some of these games are this is entirely possible
Man, this video spikes my post traumatic stress disorder brought on by home versions of games that shouldn't have existed. :D
I must say, the Amiga version does the game of Ghosts 'N Goblins justice.
Okay, the Game Boy Color version actually looks pretty damn good.
@@jasonlee7816 No you just complaining about how it looks 'cause it looks like the NES Port
C64 by far the best. Best music my far, and you can see more of the world, more than even the arcade version.
Some times the Low Res can help more
in 1986 C64 Ghosts n Goblins was the best port (conversion) until 1990 when it was ported (converted) on the Amiga except the Atari ST conversion it sounded terrible
+Jason Lee Absolutely being a fan of every computer must admit C64 GnG is awesome
Holy crap my C64 version. The longer you stayed alive you were rewarded with those funky beats. Compared to some of the other versions, made me laugh at the chicken legs.
Uno de mis juegos favoritos
that Amstrad music is crunchy and moreish!
I believe the Capcom Arcade Cabinet you mentioned in on the X-Box 360 as well, not just the PS3. You might want to add that in sometime.
yeah .. slight oversight. Forgot to mention it. It's easy to miss some of this stuff when You have a mountain of notes in front of you. 0_o
wingnut4427
Yeah, I understand. It's not a big deal or anything, just something I noticed and thought I'd point out to you.
The music of the c 64 is really adjusted to the game
WOOOW!!!! The PSP Version is really nice! Ive never seen this Game in that graphix
I didn't even know there was a Gameboy Color version of this game.
Nice video as usual. DOS version is horrendous and why is the boss on the Atari ST facing the other way; how rude!
The Amiga Version is faithful down to the secret bonuses, armor placement and even glitches! (the zombie corridor in Level 3, in example)
I remember seeing the Amiga version when I was 12. I thought it was an amazing conversion and worth the 1mb upgrade!
plays with 1/2 meg, but has no music
more Amiga arcade conversions should've had the 1mb upgrade
Hey man, great video as it always has been! I have come here to say that the intro song seems to no longer be on 4shared, after all this years, do you happen to have another link to the song?
Not sure where to get it now. But I may have the video files backed up on an old drive somewhere. Might take some time but if I find it I'll upload it & give you a link. Just need to look for it.
@@GamingHistorySource Thank you! Your efforts are much appreciated
Commodore 64’s music for this game kicks ass!
Spectrum's water effects on stage 2 are pretty neat.
The C16/Plus-4 version doesn't even have _sprite transparency_?!
Amiga is the best port of the arcade game.
C16/Plus-4 has no sprites, hence no sprite transparency :P
I had the Commodore 64 version as a kid. What memories.......all of them frustrating!!
Some pieces are nothing alike the arcade version and that's awesome. Good game choice for comparison
Commodore 64 is my favourite version. The music is amazing!
The download link to the opening remix is down. Anybody know where I can find it? Kind of curious what the rest of it sounds like...
missing the GBA version. It's called Makaimura though. Only released in Japan.
Wasn't that Ghouls 'n Ghosts? That was the sequel to this.
5:42 action 52 Manchester jump sound?
The Amstrad version sounds like a fucking awesome remix, the GBC version is WAY too focused closely on Arthur...
1985?!?!
This game was way ahead of it's time.
Also, the DOS sound makes me want to shove ice picks in my ears.🥴
You forgot the GBA Mini Famicom version and the Wonderswan version.
the gameboy color version is just the nes version ported to the gbc but with a small screen
Really like the colour of the msdos version. The C64 version though, the music is iconic! No music in any version has ever come close.
That arthur in the Ultimate Ghouls N Ghosts! LOOKS SO FRIKING EASY!
Anyone else ever thought how weird it is, that at the start of the game, they're possibly about to "make out" in a graveyard?
+nbirdman74 Not only that.. but look where her hands are & how Author is laying on the ground.
Wow, i never saw footage from the psp port. Looks pretty interesting. How is the game play?
if you have a PSP buy that version then find out for yourself
The arcade code and graphics were dumped, and used in the amiga port, that's why the game is so faithfull to the capcom board.
how do you know the arcade code and graphics were dumped then used in the amiga port (version)?
@@jasonlee7816 he doesnt
@@jasonlee7816 It was common knowledge back in the day. Developers talked about it and it's advert advertised the fact.
Makes the bloke above me(Mario Wario) look foolish to spew crap without an iota of research. Would have taken maybe 14 seconds of time to see dlfrsilver is correct.
beezle1976 i didn’t know it was common knowledge back in the day, i didn’t know developers talked about it, i didn’t know an advert advertised it possibly or probably because i did NOT understand the process the Ghosts n Goblins arcade code and/or graphics (visuals) were dumped and then used in the Amiga port (version) i could research it but all, most, some of the info i find might not make any sense or not much sense or zero sense
The PSP version is really a huge love letter to the franchise. It is outstanding! I have it for my PS Vita and love it! I actually think the NES version, although not as graphically impressive as the arcade, it plays better than the arcade. Great video!
Why did you use a ZX Spectrum emulator with no sound? I'm guessing it's because this game barely had any sound to begin with, right?
It has sound. It's real low.
I'm confused about the MS-DOS and Amstrad versions. I ran the MS-DOS version on my Amstrad, and the Amstrad is a IBM-PC clone. The Amstrad had a monophonic PC speaker with volume knob, yet the audio demonstrated here for the "Amstrad version" seems to be beyond those capabilities. Was there a newer Amstrad with better graphics and sound than the PC1512 and PC1640 that is being shown here? I don't remember ever seeing an Amstrad-specific version of any software, just IBM-PC and compatibles.
Amstrad separately had a (MS-DOS) PC clone product line and a different 8-bit home computer line called the CPC.
Westwurtzli I'll be damned. I had the ones with poop graphics and sound. My favorite computers to this day, though.
i used to have a pirated version for the commodore 64. Only after 5-10 minutes of not loading did you know if it had crashed...usually took 15 minutes or so to load in that respect. Thanks for the memories...love that C64 theme.
That PSP version looks awesome!
Who could have possibly thought that making a PC speaker version of the music was a good idea? Also, is it me or is the C16 version deliberately bad?
I think the C16 could have done much better. Maybe just lazy programmers?
I was digging the amstrad and comedore 64 music.
I've beat the nes version (it was traumatic) and I'm trying to beat the arcade version now
i never played this on ms-dos... there is really a version of ghost 'n goblin on windows ???
This game was made shortly before Super Mario Bros. 1 came out, and is one of the last platformers ever created that predate SMB1.
I really liked the Atari st graphics they seem to have given it a unique perspective of the arcade game making it look like it but also very different. music wise the Gameboy version really surprised me in a positive way. the ps2 version was an absolute joy to watch but felt a bit slow.
Atari ST Ghosts n Goblins gave me an impression it was a crappy, rushed, shitty job without the developer giving themselves enough time
The high scores of the Amstrad LOL
Looks like the 16-bits got fairly decent conversions, but personally I always liked the Speccy version, some great sprite re-working. In fact, it was the first game I ever bought with my own money :D
Best overall remake: Nintendo
Best remake of the main theme: Amiga
Best original theme: Tie between Amstrad and Commodore 64
Best overall game: Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins
Worst remake: Commodore 16
Worst remake of the main theme: DOS
Even ZX is playable only problem is that it looks lazy...if the port was made by US Gold that explain everything
Best overall remake is nowhere near close to nes. Amiga is almost arcade perfect ;)
in zx spectrum who whrere tap image? thanks
Love the C64 version
i grabbed the psp version for my vita earlier this week. its nice.
1-Get the god damn knife
2-Evolution is a beauty don't?
Amiga Best of Home computer Versions also C64 got great theme and is pretty good as well
The one and only sound effect on the zx spectrum is definitely a wet fart. Sometimes it's a single shot sometimes its a 3 round burst. Hilarious
Still plays better than the NES version. Just because more people had it as kids doesn't make the NES a good version
Love the music on the c64, I think it is the best.
I'd like to try ultimate GnG of the PsP. I wonder if exists an emulator that permits me to play this game on a PC.
C64, Wow what great music indeed.
Commodore 64's music reminds me of some of music from the Jet Set Willy remakes.
Who remade them?
Ghouls n' Ghosts is the sequel to Ghosts and Goblins, it was also an arcade game, and AFAIK the first version of it on home consoles was Genesis. Super Ghouls n' Ghosts has separate levels than the arcade/genesis and has MASS use of Mode 7. I think the SNES version is better than the arcade.
Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins is probably the greatest side-scrolling game ever made! Wish that can be released as part of a retro game pack for the PS4.
you can't buy it from the psn online?
Not sure if you can or can't.
+faithinchaos2012 until Sony has found a way to emulate PSP games on the PS4 using PlayStation Now a cloud gaming service you won't see Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins on the PS4 PlayStation Store
Used to load the c64 version up and not play it, just let the tune play.
Prior to watching this vid, the best of these was SUPER Ghouls n Ghosts (SNES). But after seeing the PSP version, I think Super Ghouls n Ghosts would have to step aside a little, no wait, make that a LOT!
There also was ghosts 'n goblins on SNES called super gouhls and ghosts
*ghouls
And that game was based on the SEQUEL to Ghosts and Goblins, not the original game
You can't put a sequel in a comparison video of the original game. That would be like putting a version of Mortal Kombat 3 in a comparison video for MK1
At least the PSP respects the original, not like Altered Beast for PS2.
Practically all the SEGA AGES stuff is awful in that regard.
I want the psp one... I didn't even know it existed.
I like that amstrad remix
LOL. Going direct from the arcade original to the C16 port. ARGH MY EYES ! :D
Fantastic play sound.. What's the title???
It's at the end credits. Can't seem to find the song now. :( Sorry.
