In 1989, artists from Pink Floyd, Queen, Rush, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Yes, Iron Maiden, Free and others joined forces to raise funds for people affected by the Armenian earthquake. Kerrang called it "the greatest array of hard rock talent every assembled".
Organised by Jon Dee, the remake featured David Gilmour, Brian May, Tony Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore, Alex Lifeson and Chris Squire on guitars. On vocals it had Ian Gillan, Bruce Dickinson, Paul Rogers and Bryan Adams. Keith Emerson and Geoff Downes played the keyboards and Roger Taylor played the drums.
The song was released worldwide - it successfully raised funds to rebuild a children's music school in Gyumri in the Armenian earthquake zone. Today the new school teaches music to 220 children a year!

Interesting to hear Paul Rodgers sing a Deep Purple number. We all know Ritchie Blackmore wanted him as Ian Gillan’s replacement back in ‘73, a definite “what could have been” here
lifeson-only mix? :-)
Anna Kasparian is an Armenian. Fuck Armenia.
Check out Richie Blackmore speaking on how this tune is a rearranged Beethoven's 9th symphony. No kidding. Then you won't be too impressed with any of this.
Brian and Tony's friendship is one of the purest things rock has given us
Tony and Brian doing Apache... Fantastic stuff!
What a musicians, what a fuckin’ musicians. Rock giants in the same studio recorded the rock anthem “Smoke On The Water”. Just brilliant.
RIP Tommy Vance, Chris Squire and Keith Emerson.
I remember reading about these sessions in a Guitar Wolrd magazine, from 1989/1990. Perhaps it wouldn't hurt if this documentary was promotoed ( again ) to Guitar Player/Guitar World Magazines. Great upload. The moment of Brian and Tony /rehearsing one of the Shadows pieces is PRICELESS!!
Wow, what a collaboration of greats wow, fantastic pieces of, Purple, Queen, ELP, Sabbath, Maiden, Bad Company, Yes, Asia, Pink Floyd And Rush it's like the greatest rock band in the world!!!
RIP CHRIS SQUIRE, & KEITH EMERSON, 2 very sad musical losses
The amount of musical clout in this 1 song leaves me speechless
I know exactly when this was made because Brian came in to my gig in San Diego and as soon as he walked in of course I lit up but no one else seemed to know who he was. I'll NEVER forget what he said to me that night. "As soon as I heard your hands on the neck of the guitar, I knew you were a great player."I could have retired right then.....and maybe should have
Seeing all these greats together can make one a bit misty eyed. Far too many gone. Great remake, by the way.
I bet that when Blackmore and Gillan were invited, each made sure the other wouldn't be there when he walked in!
What a bunch of smart-arse, funny, disfunctional, talented musicians! They don't make 'em like they used to...
12:13 That smile on face !
Gods of Rock... Incredible!
Thanks for putting this up! Priceless!
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching!
What a great documentary! So nice to see many talented musicians together, especially when most of them are from your favorite bands. Heard the song many times, but each time it leaves me speechless 💪💪
A great piece of art.
Roger taylor looks like lars ulrich of metallica in this vid
Man I just had a flashback, sitting in my bedroom As a teenager, headphones on, listening to To Radio 1 (when it was good) Friday night rock show with Tommy Vance, first heard of things like Donington listening to that show, good times.
Thanks for this amazing video! Greatest musicians on one place, singing and playing. Really overwhelming.
What a great ride through the past with Rock-n-Roll Royalty!
Thanks for posting this, I love these Rockumentaries.
Old misery would be Roger Waters?
- Well spotted
😂😂😂
tony iommi legend
I love this so much!!! Thank you for uploading this masterpiece 😍
Amazing
Geoff Downes understates the actual lyrics to Smoke on the Water, in a snobby way. The riff sets the mood and the lyrics paint a picture.... for anyone willing to listen.
Only Ritchie is playing the riff the right way. Parrallel fourths.
La chanson qui a révolutionné le monde du hard rock !!!!!! Great, marvelous !!
A masterpiece of antology
Stunning document...¡¡¡
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for Watching!
I salute all the rock maestros to join hand in hand for this noble cause on a iconic song like "Smoke on the Water". We, the people from one and half a centennial do have the superluck to see the idols altogether.Again it proves , music , that is created also for humanity, for the greater purpose!
Rogers seems younger now...
21:55 The best ever version of Apache?
A masterpiece of antology !
Внимательно смотрел, и вот что скажу, здесь есть момент, где Роджер в финале песни наворачивает мощную сбивку, а в оригинале ее не вставили, а зря!Ведь так намного круче!!
WTF, Alex Lifeson on a tele, never seen that before.
Gil C
lifeson carried the tele on the road for at least two decades and played it live
Cara !!! Isso é MUITO LEGAL !!!!
É DEMAIS, cara !!!!
V A L E U !!! 😁😁😁👍👍👐
( From Brazil )
I love this song. but I am just wondering why they chose smoke on the water for this project.
Ritchie and Brian were the only ones with an original tone/sound. Even Gilmore seemed to succumb to the over processed, high gain, late 80s sound that made guitarists almost indistinguishable. But not Ritchie. You knew he was playing a Strat because you could HEAR the Strat through all That. Lifeson's rhythm track was the shit too
My fellow Canadians (this one's from Alberta): notice Roger Taylor about 39:00 is wearing a shirt that reads JASPER, CANADA?
@25:28 . Can any tell me how I can learn this ?
No Jimmy Page? I guess being around Blackmore can be quite intimidating.
“Ole misery guts”
🤘
Were in the Hell is Rodger Glover?
what's the song in 22:37
dp🔥🎸❤🎵
Wonder how it turned out if Jeff Beck did the entire solo.. 🤔
Hahaha.. Ian Gillan forgot the lyric
Ian Gillian is great but Paul Rogers was AWESOME.
Que te puedo decir...? Ahí esta todo
👍🙏🔥🎸🎶 dp
I need to see Roger Taylor rock out together with Neil Peart. Will be more awesome than adding Alex Lifeson to this.
PS: just my opinion.
Im with Ritchie on all these remixes - there's a reason why the ones chose were selected...they were the best....just a way for some producers to rehash and make bank
If this was in 1989 why didnt freddie.m go to sing
He was on hiatus
good old tommy vance narrating rest in rock rir
No John Lord?
Check out Richie Blackmore speaking on how this tune is a rearranged Beethoven's 9th symphony. No kidding. Then you won't be too impressed with any of this.
4:40 "Talented Session Guitarist" is playing it wrong...
12:22 Well damn!! They're all playing it wrong!
25:20 HE ain't playin' it wrong :-)
Great! Yet Blackmore seems to be a little odd...
He's always, more so in studio envirovements.
The session guy is playing the riff wrong!
That was just a scratch track to set up the rhythm for the drummer and base player (RIP Chris Squire). I sure it was tossed once the big boys got there.
"dave gilmour, brian may, chris squire, roger taylor & ian gillan? WANKERS!"
........lil wayne
Sorry... Gillan, co-creator of deep purple?? Well... Nope.
I can't believe they didn't have Frank come in to play. That would of been the Icing on the cake if you ask me. What? You didn't ask? Well fuck you Booboo! Lol. Do I need to tell you who Frank is? He is the Father of the Mothers! LOL!!!
Вы бы еще сняли о том, как создавалась мелодия "в траве сидел кузнечик"...
Brian May wrote Smoke on the Water?
You can put a bunch of virtuosos together, that doesn't mean magic will happen. This makes that PAINFULLY obvious. 😩😩😩😩
.....it's not even that good. Highway star and speed king blow it out the water amongst others.
What is the increase of "worst"?
This is the most appelling and kitschy cover version of a great tune I have ever heard.
No eggs in the pants but trying to whistle la paloma ...
Big names but poor boys ...
All of these All Star musicians yet the version they did sounds like total crap, and not even close to the original
I thought this was about deep purple's version this fucking sucks
