  • 1984 saw the long-awaited reunion of the classic DEEP PURPLE Mark II lineup of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. It was the first time they had been together since 1973. They recorded a brand new studio album, "Perfect Strangers", and headed out on tour. The band's show in Sydney, Australia was professionally filmed and is the only full-length concert recording of the band at this time.
The "Perfect Strangers Live" DVD - released October 14 via Eagle Vision - is a stunning concert with the band in incendiary form. The setlist mixes then new tracks from the "Perfect Strangers" album with favourites from the early seventies culminating in the brilliant "Smoke On The Water" finale. This is without doubt one of the finest DEEP PURPLE concerts ever filmed and a must have for their legions of fans.
This documentary can be found on the DVD.

I caught them on this tour at Merriwether Post Paviliion in Columbia, Maryland. At one point I noticed a buddy busy stuffing two broken-off cigarette butts in his ears and my other buddy standing there frozen and just kinda vibrating. We had all been in garage bands, had done local gigs and had seen many major concerts by this time, but it was so loud that I almost couldn't make out the song at times (in spite of being the huge Purple fan that I was). But the show was fantastic - no special effects, just awesome individual musicianship, super tigjht ensemble playing and great songs. During the guitar/vocal duel of "Strange Kind Of Woman" Ritchie played a lick and Ian hesitated, looked at the crowd and said "I think I know that one" then proceed to do it.

Ritchie is foudner DP as Jon. Ritchie can`t loose his belt when Ian and Roger join band. I know Gillan mentionate Blackmoore often best guitarist, but very difficult person. After many singers, JR Dioo also told same story. Ritchie Blackmore is great musician and one of best guitarist ever, but no team player. DP Mk 2 was very good the first time, but by the reunion, they were a well oiled machine at the top of their game. Got to see both tours, Perfect Strangers and House of Blue Light, and their best music was done during this period, beyond a doubt, but I'm also a big fan of the early Rainbow with Dio and the late Rainbow with J. L. Turner, and without Richie's flighty diva attitude, we might not have been treated to these eras. I think Richie has fired every musician he has worked with at least once (excepting maybe his wife).

I bought Perfect Strangers as soon as it was released. It
Was a great album and a did Godsend as it saved us from the US hair hands.
People forget that it was released at the end of 1984. 1984 being the year that Van Halen had their massive worldwide breakthrough bum.Eddie Van Halen was the gunslinger of the day.
Perfect Strangers was the perfect album as it rescued us from the likes of Warramt, Ratt, Poison etc. It brought the better part of the 70's in an 80's way. I wish I kept it but I remember reading an article on how Eddie Van Halen cites Page and Joe Perry as his influences yet he blatantly ripped off Blackmore. This guitar playing critic then song by song explained how EVH stole from the man in black including the "hammer on." Àgain I wish i"d kept the article.
I played the album Perfect Strangers repeatedly. Here in Australia we were proud of DP as they began their tours here and the video to the single Knocking on your Back Door was filmed in Sydney. Terrible video that burst the bible for Russell Mulcahey.

oh man, i'm 48 and i'm proud to say i sort of look like these guys, long hair, a respectable but not so huge beer belly haha... the funny thing is that they were like ten years younger when they recorded the magnificent 'Perfectc Strangers' lol... btw, thi is just a little joke.i LOVE Purple since for some reason my grandma gave me a triple LP set of theirs for my 9th birthday... i was way into Kiss and Alice Cooper, so the clerk at the store suggested that album, if memory serves me right- well, that dude was right on target!

DEEP PURPLES first official show on the Perfect Strangers world tour was at the Perth Entertainment Centre Perth, Western Australia, Nov 27( tues eve) 1984. I was there in 3rd row along with 5000 other rabid rock/ metal fans. Support band, local heroes Trilogy so it was an incredible unforgettable nite. Lost interest couple times during this dis jointed docu but was a nostalgic trip back.

It can be presumed that any Musician who's reach a certain maturity (age) cannot, realistically, perform at the same level as they once had over a century ago. That being said, go to a Deep Purple show, or any show for that matter, with a realistic expectation. I am glad to see that they are still with us, and can give us a semblance of what ingenuity in music, production and performance are like.

I agree, however, Iron Maiden puts on an incredible show. Without exaggerating they are as good live today as they were during the Powerslave tour. One difference is that their shows are shorter now. 1 hour 45 minutes on the current tour.

I once saw a 70 year old blind bluesman kick the ass of a 24 year old Van Halen wannabe with a one note solo. The house cheered and the wannabe stood there with his mouth open. Feeling and timing versus youth and speed?

Any performance done by any band from that time, from Speed wagon to Metallica y light years from what today's mainstream shitty music artists do.
