How to Make Easy High Performace Acoustic Panels for $10 - One Day DIY

- My new studio space has a lot of echo and to remove that I needed to make bunch of acoustic panels. I needed something cheap and decent looking for low price so I can get the studio operational fast. I can make better looking and more panels later to improve the space further.
I started by cutting frames from boards. I used very rough boards which to keep the cost at under $10 per panel. I made simple frames to fit a sheet of mineral wool. For the back of the frame I used cheap fabric that only serves the purpose of keeping the wool inside the frame. The fabric was stapled to the wood Next the wool was inserted. Then I used better looking fabric for the front. That was stapled of as well and trimmed from the back with scissors.
The panels should be mounted on walls so that they block the sound waves from bouncing, so at minimum you want some panels on 2 walls and to the ceiling, or you need thick carpets tahat do the same. When installed like this the waves can't bounce back and forth anymore. But if possible you want to cover all walls. Also having a door open van easily cause lots of echo as well.
PS: I noticed that USA has much more expensive mineral wool maybe I'm looking from wrong place, or wrong brands but the price on my video is normal price here locally.

I really needed this video. As an audio engineer on a budget, I need to get as much as I can done in my bedroom/studio without breaking the bank. Thanks, Mr. Odd! 😊
Addendum for those reading in the future: There are many types of mineral wool. While you shouldn't be disturbing it, and it shouldn't decay for many years, pick something with a low biopersistence so your body can filter it out; should you need to move, maintain, or remove these panels.
You're prob used to it but whenever im done working on something i get a feeling of satisfaction that i cant describe
At first I was thinking, what a cool little tablesaw alternative; but after seeing it used, I think my fingers are worth more than the space savings.
Great work. Did the same 6/7 years ago and it changed everything (studio recording / mixing). Just a comment regarding your sawtable : never use glove with a saw table, use pushers, and put it on very stable table. What you did was just dangerous and you have to think of your very large audience (probably some teenagers also watching this).
Wow, that is a huge difference simply from a few of those acoustic panels. Impressive!
I have made a few similar type panels, but was curious to see how others do it. One trick I might recommend is that for the back of the panel, I used weed barrier fabric and it was so much cheaper (and I can use the excess leftovers for yard work) and then the nicer fabric on the face. But looks great and helped a lot!
That combination miter and table saw is brilliant!
I feel like the top needs a cover
So neat! Art canvases would probably work too. A good sale on them and you can get the big ones for cheap.
Nice! And easy to make. To make it more rigid you can use little triangles in internal corners.
Love these videos! Ever think of doing a tour video of your workspace or a video going over a lot of the tools you have/use regularly?
Can you please do a “How To” video on how you recreate factory labels on photoshop? You recreated the factory label on that white PS2 slim video on your other channel. I would LOVE to see how you create those labels! Thanks for the entertainment
Awesome work, huge difference 👏
What a difference! Nice work👍
Love the new panels, Odd! :D Now it's less echoey!
Oooooh this pained my heart as someone who studied cabinetmaking/wood carpentry. T_T
So, before you ever "cut" wood to it's proper size, you always need to "square" it first. Basically, removing all of that excess undesirable wood texture from when it was first cut.
Don't get me wrong, this is just me nitpicking!
And I'm only at 1m36 seconds into the video! hahahaha
I still always enjoy watching all of your contents, here and on Odd Tinkering. =D
Excelent job.
Very effective, well done 👍
I was just thinking about how to make acoustic panels the other day, and I'm glad they were just as easy as I expected them to be. While I was saddened that I couldn't find denim batting at any of my home improvement centers, I figured as long as I don't use fiberglass or foam, I should be okay.
EDIT: I meant to say urethane foam. That's the stuff you spray onto wooden walls and it expands as it hardens.
I haven't tried any other foams than the small pads I show on the video. I looked into using insulation foam but based on what I found that might not be as good as the wool. Maybe insulation foam with similar texture to the foam pads might be another good idea
Rock wool is similarly hazardous to breathe as fibreglass. But as long as it's covered all around by cloth, it's probably OK either way.
@@SianaGearz I wasn't thinking about breathing hazards so much as being cut by it or getting it embedded in my skin, but you do raise a good point.
As long as I'm wearing a good-fitting N95-grade mask while cutting and fitting it, that should keep it out of my lungs, and I do have a small area that I can use as a workspace to build it.
Awesome video
Nice work.
Good work
Great share
Those ridged panels are worth it, but u have to pay up for good, thicc ones. Auralex is a good brand. I'd avoid the cheap ones on Amazon tho bc they're not gonna be thicc enough to dampen much sound unless ur in a rly tiny room
Bro...your content is so good...👌👌👌
I think that I'll be doing the same in my home office, it'll make video conferencing sound so much better for the others on the call.
Any one else notice the door built into the garage door that also folds as it goes up? That is sweet do a video on that please!
That is made by a company in some versions of garage doors here. So unfortunately it's not custom made by him
It''s not made by me but it think it would be possible to add one to at least some existing lifting doors with some hinges that allow the door to bend like that
I have never seen a combination chop saw / table saw before, and I find the idea fascinating. Mind you, it didn't look like it worked very well...
Ooh new content!
Nice
I had to do some sound proofing and used some foam mattress pads (the ones with all the wibbles) and have had no complaints for five years. They're just now starting to be old enough to fall apart.
I love you content.. fab stuff.. you mentioned you made a mistake in this one by rushing... I said to my husband just before you put about the mistake on the screen.. 'Isn't he using his scissors upside down?"... and would like to know if that was indeed the mistake you referred to?
And now we need to figure out how to make them without proper tools 😂
If you buy board that you don't need to split, maybe 2" x 0.5" board, you can easily hand saw it to lenght. And just hammer it together with nails. You can get the saw, hammer and staple gun for under $30 from walmart so you don't need to make many of these to cover the cost, but it will be a bit more work that way
@@Odd_Experiments you don’t even need the saw. Hardware stores, like Home Depot, Menards…, usually saw it for you for a couple of bucks, if anything. They don’t do anything too precise, but something simple like that, no problem. I had it done many times. :)
You might consider a strip of wood in the middle to prevent the sides from bending in when you stretch the material. Do yourself a favor and get a new blade for that saw, at the least, get the one you've got sharpened, it's dangerous enough without pushing your luck with a dull blade that will promote kickback with warped wood.
I would not have used mineral wool if I didn’t seal it really well out of experience if that dust start to get out you are not going to have a fun time
Won't those panels raise the room temperature substantially?
How effective is it to simply hang those IKEA carpet sheets from the walls? I imagine that would do just fine if you cover most of not all of the walls.
Definitely not as effective but if you don't have the option of building panels, it might be worth it. In my old studio I only had carpets, towels and thick blackout curtains literally everywhere. It was ok but I recommend these panels if possible. 100% worth the extra effort. You can imagine that 5cm of insulation gives very different result than that relatively thin carpet
@@Odd_Experiments For sure, no question there. Pretty smart solution.
I wonder if someone could literally just hang the insulation itself from the walls? Just trying to think of the cheapest ways possible to implement such a setup.
@@skins4thewin My old band room had compressed rock wool squares, but just having normal rock wool would be bad as ther is a lot of small partials, that are not good for your lungs
@@Glaaki13 Ah I see. So in other words you'd want it to be enclosed like it is here? Makes sense.
@@skins4thewin yes as the compressed is really more expensive
chop saw table saw?! 😮 🤯
could use a saw blade guard and proper pushstick
What is mineral wool?
You should have had at least one of the panels printed with the famous ducktor 🤣😂
Can I send some of my old ps2 discs and some consoles to you for repairing
Cheap, simple, and more fire-retardant than cheap chinese foam squares... :P
The absolute cheapest way to get fabric for a project like this is to buy 2nd hand bedsheets at a thrift store.
You’re cutting it up anyway
Eww dude (not for your use but for normal shoppers) ... Where I'm at they would never take things like bed lines because that's utterly disgusting
I find it hilarious how much sound deadening materials cost when you buy it with that purpose, with acceptable results, surely, but you can make just as good panels for a fraction of the cost.
Looks worthy. If somebody looking for cheapest (almost free) solution, then look at big cardboard eggholder... looks ugly AF but easy to mount and still works)
Not really... At best about as good as that acoustic foam. Not great.
That saw makes me nervous!
That's healthy.
Повесил бы ковры или занавески на стены и всё)
Its interesting how much cheaper you can get it for making them yourself, but the only issue with projects like these is the price of tools and materials and time start to outweigh the pros of it being "cheaper". Great vid otherwise but useless to a lot of people who either don't have time or need for these tools in their Home/Apartment.
I agree, it's not something evryone can do but I still tried to keep it quite simple for thise who can use tools. That's also why I added the scene where I mention the IKEA carpets. Those foam panels look better but are quite useless, the ikea carpets are much better value for the money, but ugly. If you can't build your own but need them cheap, just cover everything with cheap carpets, towels, blackout curtains etc.
Always people on DIY channels complaining about the tools 🤦♂️
@@scottmartin7717 not complaining just making an observation
@@TheNephilimofEmpireCity you literally said it is useless to a lot of people... as if those people couldn't get and use a 3 dollar hand saw and a 2 dollar hammer + nails.
Not useless. You could build them with screws and a power drill/screwdriver just the same plus tacks and a hammer. Don't buy large wood that you need to split lengthwise, you can have the store cut it to size or find suitable cross section and shorten with a crosscutting saw yourself. I do believe most people have most of the tools needed, basic tools, and if you have to buy one or two, they don't really take up space.
Wow that's a lot of money on panels ... Yikes.
Are you ever going to do a face reveal?
Never say never, but not any time soon at least. It's something I can't really reverse once I've done it. It definitely has it's pros and cons and I'm not sure the pros out weight the cons for me personally
Whatever you do, never do a voice reveal!
@@YT-Lucas Too late. There's a few videos where he did some speaking sponsor spots
Face reveal? Haha. How about hands reveal. I think Mr. Odd is called like that for a reason, because he sleeps in well fitting nitrile gloves. Which honestly is fine by me. :D
@@SianaGearz The older videos feel so weird to watch since he doesn't wear gloves in them. Clearly we can date the videos by pre and post-glove eras
