- In this video we visit Lancashire to look at the remains of the 18th Century Hollinshead Hall house and its well house. We start at the Roddlesworth Waterfall. Hollinshead hall house was a country house built in 1776. It was the country manor of John Hollinshead. The house was demolished in the early 1900's and all that remains are ruins. In the grounds of the old house is the complete and renovated Hollinshead hall well house. The well house is a charming grotto constructed in the early 19th century so that pilgrims could take the healing spring water that flowed hear. Initially lauded by Pagans the spring water was later Christian. The spring water or Holy well is said to have healing properties. The properties are said to cure conditions of the eye. Finally in this historical tour of Lancashire we visit Liverpool castle. Liverpool castle was built by Lord Leverhulme. William Hesketh Lever. The Edwardian Industrialist and philanthropist. Liverpool castle is situated at Rivington just outside Bolton. It was a folly built as a replica of the original Liverpool castle that stood in Liverpool. This video includes drone and aerial footage of Lancashire.

I've sent you an adventure in your mail Martin. You'll love it 👍
Ok
Martin's videos sadly can't help against the virus, but they're a cure for boredom. 👍
Your sure right 😉
Thank you. Hopefully back to normal soon
@@MartinZero 👍
Virus is your control.
@@ArnoldClarke absolutely
I moved away from Manchester as a child and moved to the Midlands, which is where I've grown up. That said, I still have family in and around Manchester and your videos have taught me so much about a place that was once home. Thank you and I appreciate the effort you go to get the best content for your viewers.
Thanks very much John
Wow I love these ruins. These places just have something about them!
Great arent they
Many thanks again Martin. The Well House is a little gem.
Thanks Martin if i was a fish id move in to the spring house swim in all those memories Keep safe !!
Cheers Dave, I bet there are some memories there as well
"fake castle ruins" - That is impressive to see someone actually build modern ruins.
Myself living about 2 hours from Biltmore Estate, I can attest to the surprise when you think you are looking at something centuries old but then realize it was built in the 1880s with running water and electricity.
Thanks for showing these. Greatly appreciated.
Thank you
We stumbled across these ruins and the well house some 25 years ago, while out on a walk.
Great arent they
I know there is no point in dwelling on these lost houses however it deeply saddens me that they are gone. So much hard work, care and memories lost.
That was so interesting. What a find. Loved the waterfalls. Filming and music brilliant. Thank you for taking us on a fabulous trek.
Thank you Shirley
Yeh, goodun, well matched.
Just what was needed for a wintery sunday night
Well said 😊
Thanks very much Tim
I know where you are! We went camping once at Belmont reservoir and a water board warden moved us on but said try around the castle which we did and a t 6 o'clock in the morning there was noise coming from the field we were camping in - there was a chap with a full drum kit giving it what for - it turned out his partner didn't like the noise either and so he came out to this spot on a regular basis - hey ho Stay Safe
Cheers Frank, great story 😀
Curtains closed, snow excluded, feet up and settled for a good viddy 👍
Cheers Matty. Hope you liked it
Beautifully edited Martin. The mind boggles at simple thoughts of the conversations that were had by the workmen that layed each stone whilst building these wonderful buildings for us to all enjoy 100s of years later. Keep up the great content 👍
Thank you Mark
Well that stirred up some memories!
Back in the 70's we would bike it up there from Swinton. Of course we never realized the castle was a folly. Back then you would never have got to the end of that narrow passage! We used to go for a swim in the pond in the gardens near the tower, then bike it back home. Kids nowadays do not know they are born!
Tockholes was a spiritual center founded after the ravages of WW1 .... before the diagnosis of Shell Shock!
As per usual another Cracking Video!
Did the same from Little Hulton Dave.A spoke in the Sturmy Archer for 2nd gear all the way.Fantastic days out for estate kids Rivington and Belmont.
Thanks very much Dave, good info
Thanks guys for another great "lost in the wood find", thank god for something decent to entertain us on a Sunday night. So, that's no fish supper for you tonight James!!!! 👍🏻
Cheers Bob 😀
Been checking for an upload, kettle on ,Martin time...your better than tv....thanks martin
My sentiments entirely Mike, lockdown relief 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks very much Mike
The well house was a delightful hidden gem for sure and Liverpool Castle was amazing. Enjoyed watching it all, well done Martin and James.
Thanks very much Valerie, glad you enjoyed
Thanks again for the upload Martin, Sunday night complete! 👍 Stay safe
Thanks Jay, much appreciated
Im have a terrible time at present so really look forward to though few special words
WELCOME BACK TO ANOTHER VIDEO - thank you Martin & minder Cheers Rob
Thanks Rob, hope things get better
Great video Martin. Lovely barrel vaulted ceiling and diminishing coursed roof. Water gardens & Grottos were very fashionable things to have for the rich and famous in the early 1800s....
Well Martin that was absolutely fantastic. Loved those ruins they were awesome but that springhouse was amazing. Thank you so much for taking me along. Please stay safe and take care
Thanks LInda
Thank you, Martin and James. A day meant for hot tea.
Ah, my old stomping ground - every time I get back to see the folks (in Darwen) I always take a walk across to Tockholes over the moors with friends and family - some excellent pubs in Tockholes too. I'm in Italy now to avoid all that bloody rain! :) - miss the moors a lot though - cheers Mr Z!
Thanks Daimon. Yes mate too much rain
The architecture in the well house is stunning, what a tremendous survivor. Another interesting video. Thank you.
Thanks Dave
What a couple of great finds. Cheers for sharing Mr Martin!
Thanks you two. Yes definitely a hidden gem the well house
Love your channel. Here in Texas covid-19 has changed our lives in ways I never thought could happen. Due to my age I have been in quarantine for a year. A year....hard to get past that. I haven't seen my kids and grandkids since February 2020. I can travel with you and make discoveries about the past through your videos. I look forward to seeing more of your explorations. I miss taking trips, exploring ancient ruins and hiking in the wilderness. Thank you for sharing. Your videos always lift my spirits.
Hello Kathleen thank you very much. Glad your enjoying the videos. I hope things soon change and you get to see your family this year. best wishes Martin
What a gem of a video, Martin. The sites are beautiful enough by themselves, but the way you introduced them to us, the camera work, background music... everything was a wonderful cinematic treat.
Thanks very much
That well-house was a real gem, you were so lucky to find it open on your first visit.
The country could do with a Lord Leverhulme right now, old money was so much more civilised the selfish narcissistic new money.
Great video again Martin well worth the continued membership.
Thanks Andy and very much appreciated
Awesome video, wandering around the ruins of an ancient building, looking around at the foundations and walls that remind brings so much joy and sadness
What a wonderfull and beautifull well house in amazing country. Liverpool castle overlooking the resvoir was amazing.
I admire the respect you have for these sacred spaces.
We'd never know about these places if it wasn't for your crew.
I've always loved history, and you bring it to us very well indeed...Thanks again fella!!
Oh.....to have a time machine.
Thanks Joe. Oh yes to have looked upon that complete house
Totally gorgeous even in the weather. Thanks Martin and James. Blessings to you both 🤗🤗

Greater Manchester is really a great place to live, so much history and places to see and walk
Yeah we are quite lucky David
Hi Martin Reaching out from Bristol. Love this excellent Lancashire archaeology and engineering. Well Done Mate!
Thank you Leroy
Hi Martin & James, a really cool video, I love seeing folly's like that castle and that house would have looked very impressive in it's day. Thank you for showing us these places because without you I would never have the pleasure of seeing and hearing about their histories. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx 🙏💖
Thank you Sue
One of your best videos Martin. I loved every minute! Something special about that Well House!
Thank you Mike
I have never encountered a Wellhouse before. Absolutely engrossing, Martin. Went to Liverpool Castle years ago. Absorbing. Original castle was completely destroyed by Royalists in Civil War out of pure spite as it held out longer than expected. A tour de force, once again, Martin.🇯🇪
Thank you Martin and James for another walk back in time and a another thoroughly entertaining video.
Thanks very much Martin
Love the hinges on the well house door. The house must have been magnificent.
I would have loved to have seen that house Steve
Wonderful as always . He was a fascinating man .
Another great video Martin! I do so enjoy your travels and wonderfully interesting 'finds" . Keep them coming or I'll collapse with boredom !
Another very interesting presentation, thank you Martin and James
Great intro. 1776 Hmmmm that's a special year for me. That house was huge, what a place to explore. The drone shots are fantastic, good job. How much beauty that was built into the well house also the slates on the roof are so thick. The castle was also interesting but I'm with you, the well house is the jewel in the crown.... Thanks for your hard work on that wet cold day.....
Thanks Mike. Yeah the well house was my favourite
Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to still put videos up Martin, ive been purposely storing them up so i can have a good hours worth of outdoors action haha take care, that well house was amazing
Lovely drone work, lovely stonework.
Thanks very much Steven
Love the well-house, wet and all! Another great video and beautiful scenery!!
Absolutely wonderful as always, Martin 💕 Very much in my stamping grounds - except I went on a walk in torrential weather to find the Hall and never found it! 😂. Rivington Terraced Gardens are absolutely beautiful now they are all being restored. There’s a story for you to tell on a visit there, and ruins to find (I love finding the old black and white floor tiles appearing out of the soil!). Really lovely video - thank you, Martin (and James). And the music was amazing 💕
Thanks very much Ani, glad you enjoyed
An unfinished fake castle. How perfect! If I ever get crazy rich, I’ve decided to build a folly somewhere for sure. As for the that spring house, I’d love to visit it. I live near Manitou Springs in Colorado, and they have similar natural spring houses and “old” castles.
@@dfar2303 So feminazis were around in the early 1900s.
I wonder what shade of blue they dyed their hair back then . . .
I would love to build my own folly Sam. maybe a tower
@@djicepole I think you'll find the goals of the suffragettes were different to today's feminists. But as ever, it was and is a fight for equality with men.
What a great video Martin and stonework rules!-you are 100%correct -a charming gem!-would have been supreme to have found the remains of an ice house!-stay safe.....
Cheers Matt. I wonder if there was an ice house ?
Known locally as Rocky Brook. You were perilously close to the Tocholes Treacle Mines
That sounds interesting
This has been a wonderful look at forgotten relics, that castle is one heck of a folly! It certainly isn't medieval as no one cut stones like that before the advent of stone saws, it would have been built using rough cut stones. I wonder what history was flooded when they built that reservoir? Most often they tear down buildings and cut all the trees down to make a clean bottom wiping out all previous artifacts of the people who once lived there. The first film of the forerunner of Time Team was done digging a village that was due to be flooded. Mike Aston said too often local history gets wiped out for the sake of modern improvements and people soon forget what was there before the valley was flooded.
He said “... it’s Well worth a visit.” And kept on going... legend.
The well house is well worth a visit but wear your wellies!
"could do with a bit more milk in it", brilliant, lovely to be outside with a brew. 😍
Not with the brew James makes 😃
Wonderful Martin. Always a gem or three in your videos! My Mum died in 1996. She was a Lancashire lass (well Salford anyway!) and I would have loved to watch all your videos with her. Alas that will never be. I live in Sydney now so there is a bit of nostalgia in your videos for me. The places, the ambience and your accent. Smashin'.
Thanks very much 👍Even I cant make out my accent
Grown up loving those ruins, being a Bolton lad. What gems. You'd love exploring the old coal mine workings and reservoir on Winter Hill / Smithills Moor!
Yeah that would be good David
Soggy Lancashire all it does is rain , the masonry on that castle and well house was stunning , craftsmanship which you rarely see any more .
I agree Mat, on both counts
Love your informative videos, soon as lockdown is over me and the wife are going Manchester to follow the Medlock
Thank you. Its hard to follow above ground but worth it. You will keep getting glimpses of it from the streets. It has a habit of disappearing
That was great. The well house I would describe as "Majestic" The castle is great. Keep up the good work guys I look forward to what you come up with next.
Thank you Robert
Monday morning here in auckland and a nice start to the day thanks martin.
Thanks Tim, bet the weather is better there
@@MartinZero at 2pm clear blue sky, sunny and 24c lol
@@MartinZero no covid too....or brexit....lol
"Ay, tis grim up North"
Love the videos in spite of the mud even though I'm a Southern Softy. My son is currently at Liverpool Uni and I was hoping to take some trips with him in the area before 2020 struck. Maybe next year, here's hoping. You have shown some wonderful places I would love to visit as we really don't have the incredible industrial heritage down here. My area is all about the Neolitic then Roman. But I am sad to see so much has been and is neglected.
Thank you , well worth a visit. Neolithic and Roman sounds great
Lord Leverhulme built some amazing structures and left quite a legacy .
You were very close to where I have caught 2 pike over 20lb . Roddlesworth and lower Roddlesworth reservoirs . It a lovely area up there 🧱👍🏼
So must history in the UK. I just love learning about all sorts of things. And your vlogs are superb.
Thank you Peter
2 seconds into the video and I get emotional as a Lancashire lad.
Beautiful place Eric
Wooooow - my kind of houses 🏘️😍
😃👍
@@MartinZero I'm telling you Martin , this kind of old houses are so beautiful!
Great video again Martin, I'd love to get amongst those ruins with my metal detector...
Thanks Allen, Yes it would be a good call with a detector
Cheers Martin another great video thanks, brightens these dark dreary Sunday nights, it's fantastic what old historic buildings are around our area's, it just goes to show what we have and what we don't see if we don't have a good look around, I really love looking at the old places there is and looking at the history of the places keep your vlogs coming and stay safe Martin
Thanks very much Graeme
Great coverage and narration of a fascinating , beautiful location. As good as a visit Martin. All the early stonework around Melbourne was completed by convicts shipped out from the prison hulks in the UK...Some examples remain almost untouched.
I love The Well House....a lot of water there. Surely there would have been a drain to get rid of all the excess if it was running outside. Thanks Martin, another gem of a video.
Thanks Anne
I walk here almost every day. Martin you legend 🙌 xx
Thanks Natalie, you are very lucky its a beautiful place
I was totally thinking "that's good walling stone" before you said about the Farmers recycling it.
Thank you, very nice video. The well house was charming, so nice it has been cared for, if only people would respect these places then they wouldnt need locking up. 🇬🇧
I think we were Lucky to get in Steve although Connor went last summer and it was open then
A very picturesque part of the world. Something around every bend!
Yeah it was very wet but very beautiful Phil
Rivington is just up the road from me and spent many a day there, a lot of work has been carried out recently (pre Covid) on renovating the Japanese gardens and surrounding paths. Another great video mate.
Yeah it looks great now. Thanks Bill
Brilliant video mate Liverpool Castle dumbfounded me many years ago until the internet put me right on its history.
Love the well-house it’s beautiful. I have a degenerative eye condition and could probably do with a few swalleys of that water. 😎
Keep up the great work my friend 👍
Wonderful find. Many thanks Martin and James. That well house is something special isn't! Your videos are put together with such care Martin. Great photography and brilliant drone footage. Thanks again.
Thanks Mike
That was great Martin...thanks! All that lovely stone work everywhere. I thought I noticed a kind of built in bench i9n the small courtyard in front of the well-house. Between the front door and the two pillars you liked. I wonder if folk were encouraged to sit there, waiting there turn to go inside and get their eyes seen to? Thank god we've can go to Specsavers these days !!! The slow-motion of the falls at the beginning was fantastic as it caught the rain falling too...brilliant effect. And finally, so glad you got another drone, it made both the house, and the castle, layouts much easier to understand. Great stuff!!!
Thanks Mike, yeah the drone really helped in this one
Loved the old well house. The stonework on the structure was fascinating.
Yeah great place Evilla
I agree with the comment further down, I wouldn't know about let alone see these places if it wasn't for you guys. I also love it that you stop for a brew. The drone shot of the house layout adds to it. The noisy gushing stream is great. I wish we had that much water in Oz. Great work fellas, keep 'em coming. I'd be out there with you except it's confortable here in my lounge chair.
Cheers Peter
Oh my gosh, what a gem that well house is! I'd love to visit it myself, but as I can't this is the next best thing. Thanks for such an interesting video!
👍👍👍😊
😃👍
Fantastic old building. You're right it's a great find and behold.
Super interesting..the well house was lovely . Thanks for sharing.
Thank you
Another fantastic video thank you. I can't believe you got into the well house, I must of tried that door a dozen times. And I've read somewhere, can't remember were, something that you mentioned in your video. The well has apparently been a holy well since pre-Roman times.
If you like old halls you should check out Wycoller Hall, Wycoller near Laneshawbridge.
I think we were very Lucky Dave. Although Connor got in last summer it was open. That place sounds good and thanks
It's just amazing at the time and pride they put into making things back then I can just imagine how that whole property looked then judging by the trees there probably wasn't any around when it was built
Martin, I have a problem!
Totally addicted to your channel and wonderful persona. I count the days between your uploads now 🤦🏻♂️.
Sincere thanks for your brilliant work, please keep it going Mucca
Going to watch this one now 👍🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😉
Thank you very much. I really appreciate that
Watching this again while waiting for the new Sunday video. LOVE the tea break music at 7:17......
Great video Martin,a well house and a folly with romantic ruins how great .....and all in Lancashire !!!
Amazing 👍
another great video Martin, loved it!
That was wonderful thank you
Excellent stuff, Martin. I've just cycled in to work, it's snowing like buggery, and I've just thawed out with a brew and your latest video. A couple of really superb sites, too. I've read of Liverpool Castle, but I never realised that it was as perfect as that. Fireplaces that have never seen a flame, and the beading of steps in a tower where no steps have ever been. What a beautiful place. The more I hear about Lord Leverhulme (he had Port Sunlight built to house the workers in his soap factory, didn't he?), the more I like the fellow.
Great video, as always. Stay safe. Thanks! Nice one.
Thanks Brian, yes Lord Leverhulme was a good old chap 😀
Cheered me up, thanks Martin. 😁
Beautiful
Fantastic Martin.
Great video Martin. I did notice how footage from the old Well House gave an ethereal presence as you entered.
Cheers from California !
Thank you and best wishes to California🇺🇸👍
Martin, your presentation is second to none .... Please keep up the good work and thankyou for
your content keeps me entharled ..cheers
