It is tricky finding the location of this "Clayton Dingle" on the old maps. What I do find in the OS 25-inch maps, roughly in the same location, is Sunny Bank Brook. This makes me think that Clayton Dingle is actually the wooded area through which the brook flows. Another very interesting video Martin.

Just stumbled accross your video, its really interesting. I worked as a contractor in the Guardian for a few weeks circa 1994. We were installing a fibre optic network called OTIAN between all the exchanges. At the time the only others down there were a couple of power engineers keeping the place alive. We would enter via Rutherford house, behind the security office at the entrance was a stairway that went down to an access shaft with blast doors and an elevator. I recall in that area was a table with a 3d model of the exchange. We would also access via the shaft under the small building between Goerge st and St James st. This building had a crane built in for lowering equipment down to the bottom. There were a couple of occasions when I would be alone down there and it was a little creepy looking down the smaller tunnels into the darkness. The decor was very 1950's with outdoor scenes on the walls, a pool table and a lounge area with a huge collection of porn magazines. I enjoyed every minute of being there as I find this kind of stuff fascinating.

when you visit historical places like this i'm always disappointed when i you them bricked up or gated off so stopping people being able to enjoy them, also im saddened when i see places or great interest just jeft to fall into disprepair or be reclaimed by nature. it's our history and should be looked after.

Yeah the New Islington name was already in place I remember going to the cardroom estate in the very early 90s just before it started to be knocked down and I took a photo of a row of houses with the sign street sign New Islington on one of those little 70s houses. This got me curious and looking at the 1891 map that road is called was called New Islington then. Urban Splash obviously jumped on this when they started redeveloping the area.

Hi Martin and the gang, I have an interesting C.E.G.B. (Central Electricity Generating Board) pamphlet on how the original tunnels 1 and 2 were converted to carry the then new 400kV Supergrid power transmission lines between Thorpe Marsh power station, near Doncaster and Stalybridge. Originally, there was a lower voltage 132kV line that ran up over Woodhead moors itself, but this was later taken down to make way for the new Supergrid transmission line. As the new line was being built from east to west, temporary permissions were granted for a new line on the larger Supergrid towers to run up over Woodhead until the old tunnels and the new cable system was installed and commisioned. This temporary line operating at 275kV was later taken down between Dunford Bridge and Woodhead at the west end, and new sealing end towers and compounds added them the new underground cables joined up and tested. A fascinating addition to the Woodhead railway line story. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to the rest of Cornbrook, River Medlock, and similar underground culvert videos soon. Cheers Paul

Thanks for the video. I used to work at Gould st gas office and drank in the Marble Arch every day. I also used to frequent the Crown and Kettle. The Peveril was one of my favourite places on a Friday night. It's amazing that I navigate Manchester by the pubs I used to drink. By the way, there is a new pub in First st called the Gasworks and it is bloody expensive. I am now an old fart in my late sixties, and not able to get around as much, so seeing this video has brought back memories from the seventies and eighties. It really is amazing how Manchester has developed and changed over the last thirty years. Thank you very much for this.

9:36 Just like it was made back in the day when things were done properly, with care out of quality materials that were designed to last if maintained correctly. Then serious greed took over and the stuff we see now is cheaply made, lasts for a short term no matter how you treat it then it gets "recycled". As a race we are regressing big time. It now takes 6-7 hours to cross the Atlantic yet 50 years ago we could do it in under 3. Locos used to last decades. Now some dont even outlive their warranty period and those that do are often unreliable and costly to run and maintain.
