RunCam Helmet Camera: My thoughts on the innovative action cam as an airsoft player [Review]

- Many airsoft players decide not only to go to events, having a good time and hitting some opponents - they also want to capture some memories on video. Be it for private purposes or to publish them on CZcams: Action cameras can become some very important part of your airsoft gear.
Some of the most popular action cams in the airsoft community are made by @RunCamFPV. A few weeks ago, the company released a new interesting camera, which is simply called the "Helmet Camera". Let´s find out what makes this little gadget so unique.
First of all, some big thanks to RunCam who sent me this Helmet Camera for free - this my first video ever which is based on a cooperation with an international tech company, and consequently a nice first milestone for my little channel - I really appreaciate this, guys!
However, the review represents my very own oppinion on the camera, I am free to tell you what I think, with all the pros and cons.

This video has given me new ways to record my footage. I was intending to use GoPro but I forget they are big and bulky, even more, they are expensive. The review was on point to the needs. Danke shon

Thank you for the review. I have always hated GoPro's because of how big and clunky they are. When I use to play paintball I ran a R7 Replay XD mounted to the rail of my helmet. I have been considering getting into airsoft and been looking at cameras. I really like this camera expect that it is only 1080p, so it would be a pass. I hope they come out with a 4K version soon.

so that you have basically the same image quality with worse runtime, filesize and harder time to edit? No thanks. Rather up the bitrate, improve the lens, compression algorythm and maybe increase the sensor size if possible. There is no need for 4k60p on such a cam.

Love the form factor but heartbreaking it's stabilization is beat by a gopro5 :(

Hey, do you know if it's possible to change the camera cable in order to make it even longer? I want to hide the main body in the battery pouch

Thanks bro! I did not change anything on the cam, settings are completely factory. I did not notice significant white noise :)
It's not white noise it's wind
The real question is, does the lense take a direct hit or will it be destroyed? The lense is kinda big target while peaking corners.
I never tried, guess it depends on impact power and distance...
Thanks for the video ! One question, is the camera recording straight when you hit the ON button, or do you need to connect in the app to set the recording ?
It records right after being switched on - connecting the app is not necessary :)

Hi, can you help me ?
I got the camera but when i turn it on with an sd card inserted the red light keep blinking fast and when i connect the camera to watch the footage it hasn t registered nothing and the sd card is empty.
I tryed to change 3 sd card but no result, i tryed update the camera firmware but is already the last version; i don t know what to do.
Do you have Ideas or it happen to yourself too?

do you know if the camera is water resistant, like able to record when it’s raining
Hello! I did not find an IPX Rating on the manufacturers website for this camera, so i think it is not water resistant. Have a good one :)
In my case, the microphone is very noisy. Did you change anything in the settings, or why do you not have any noise?
Actually, I wonder why so many people complain about bad sound quality on their helmet cameras, as mine did not have any problems with that. What you hear in the video is 1:1 sound from the recording, not edited. Of course, there is not so much going on to hear in the sample, but some background noise should be noticable in theory... which obviously is not the case here. Strange :D
Anyone else having problem getting the battery out? I just bought one (with extra batteries) but when I tried to remove the battery I noticed it is stuck in there..
You need to give it a certain "hit"/impact (but not too heavy in order not to damage the camera!) Mine was stuck, too, thats why i damaged the insulation. But you can et it out this way :)
Nice video! Bought mine a few weeks ago, and ran into an issue with the battery being stuck inside. How did you guys manage to remove it? Planning to replace the battery but I cant find a way to remove it without breaking the thing. Thank you!!

How many hours of footage can you get out of the micro sd
Depends on the card size you use. Several hours should be possible even with 64 gb :)
i cant seem to get mine to record any ideas why?
The description of your problem is not very specific, so it could be caused by several reasons. Empty Battery? No SD card inserted? SD Card full or broken? Defective Camera? Maybe it´s one of those reasons :)
Looking to get spare batteries for longer events just incase, is it a flat top battery or a normal one?
If i remember correctly, it was a flat one. But not 100% sure. Maybe someone else can help out here :)
@@rummbolt thank you, might just have to test my luck and get the flat ones then, im planning on using the camera for the silo event coming up and i dont know if i'll have time to order the batteries once the camera comes 😅
@@p1xelplayer1 The battery lasts long, you also can use an external usb powerbank to be sure :)

Here in Germany, it's not as hot as in Mexico so i could not test this yet. From my experience, heat has never been an issue - but that's probably not the most valuable information for you 😅
Do you know what Codec does the camera use for the video? I could't find any information about that.
Should be H264 as far as I can tell - H265 would have brought problems with my editing software :P

Just got it, but it only works when connected with a USB. I think it's the battery, but I charged it for 1 hour and it still doesn't work remotely. Is the USB Type C connector only for data transferring purposes or is it also a charger?
My cam works just fine also without the usb cable, maybe you got a faulty camera?
@@rummbolt could be, I messaged the support and hopefully they can sort it out. I got it to work with WiFi and to record when it was connected to the electric power, it says that the battery is at full capacity and the moment I disconnect it, it all shuts down
@@rummbolt How did you take out the battery? Mine appears to be stuck. I wouldn't be surprised if they mistook the + and -
@@VILLAINAIRE You need to give it a good shake, maybe a slight impact on a hard surface. It sits very stiff indeed
@@rummbolt I opened up the whole thing and the battery came out. It had the correct position, but it does not fit tightly at the +, it has some free space, the cap at the back doesn't push it all the way in and it could be that. I'm working on it

Appearently, this is a problem some other users in the comments have as well. Unfortunately, i do not know a solution for this, I'm sorry 🫤

@@atashli found the solution, you need to rollback to the previous version of the helmet cam and you can do it through pc only

Oh wow! The price is decent, even considering that the video quality is not flawless
And you could just 3D print a rail mount that actually fits your helmets, if own/know someone who owns a printer
Yeah, true! A 3D Printer makes airsofting a lot easier in many aspects :D I still like the ideas behind the camera; also for more experienced players or CZcamsrs, it can be a nice addition I think.
@@rummbolt a 3D printer is a must-have to anyone who is well invested into the hobby, it just makes life easier
Also about the camera, I'm afraid that branches hitting it might move the 'arm' and ruin your footage
But the wifi functionality would allow it to be used to peek around corners 😉
@alexreitler I used to have one 3D Printer, too. But because of the smell, my landlord didn´t like it so much, so it had to go :D
Concerning the "misalignment" due to branches or such: I think it is more likely to happen on this helmet camera than on a gopro Style Camera for example. But i experienced the same issue on those cameras as well, it´s maybe just a question of "how likely it is to happen" :)

And thanks for the info, I'm currently looking for a camera (that's why I clicked on the video) to keep memories from my matches. But I think I will stick with the 'old school stuff', as my NVG mount will not be occupied by something else for the foreseeable future

The test was not focused on audio quality, but it is for sure no top class product in this category

God, what garbage and not a camera, such quality was on phones 10 years ago, someone tell runcam what video stabilization is. gopro still maintains the quality bar
Maybe RunCam also reads this and listens to community reactions like yours for further improvements :)
I hope GoPro will read this and consider using this recording switch. Like on the Contour.
for 50 usd (i got it for that price from Aliexpress) it's good enough to record trainings and other stuff not for mass media
