Throttle got hung up on a 250. Before I realized it, front wheel was airborne and I had already gone THROUGH a chain-link fence and bounced my face off of a 4x4 corner of a wood fence.
Local docs refused to stitch up my face because it looked like a fire cracker had went off under the flesh. Had to wait several hours for a plastic surgeon. I still remember his expression when he walked in and said "whoa". He did a good job, external scaring was minimal. Though I am still missing a piece of my eyelid.
      Good times... maybe not.

Almost pulling across an intersection as my view was blocked by a pickup truck. A speeding Jeep Wrangler would have t boned me if I had let out the clutch and proceeded. Incredibly scary moment for me. Patience and awareness are both paramount on a motorcycle.

Scariest thing that's ever happened to me, I didn't even realize was happening. Cross country trip I felt a stomach pain outside of Bozeman, MT. I got nauseous and delerious, took a nap under an underpass and felt a little better so I rode on. Just into Idaho it hit again so I got a hotel to sleep it off. Next morning I still felt it but the mind was clear and OK so I rode to Seattle. The following day hiking the cliffs of Puget sound it hit me again! This time as bad as the first time. Nausea, delerious... We go to the hospital, they do a blood draw and a live MRI. As I exit the MRI a lab coat is shovong a needle in my arm and the surgeon is in the room and says "sir I don't know how you are even awake at this point let alone speaking but you're going directly into emergency surgery for appendicitis. It's only in retrospect now knowing what was going on that 3 day 700 mile journey through that part of the country is now the most terrifying ride of my life but riding it, I just figured I ate some bad food or something.

I was watching the video where you came face to face with a bison and I was on the edge of my seat. It made me think very hard about weather or not I would ride through Yellowstone on my bike. I also have ridden through pouring down rain and what an adventure that is. LOL

Jess, as for personal protection…S&W Model 642 .38 cal, hammerless, 5 shot, double action revolver…and lots of practice. You could throw it against a brick wall and it wouldn’t go off. For bike protection…get yourself a F.I.N. Find It Now gps tracker. I have one on both my bikes and even one on my daughter’s car. I sleep well at night when on the road or even when my bikes are at home in my garage. Be Safe

My wildlife story...I was riding out in the middle of nowhere in Alaska (near Chitina for anyone familiar) and got hit at 70mph by a magpie. They're like a crow and not small and it hit me in the shoulder, killing the bird and causing me to cuss a bit. I felt bad for the bird, but when I stopped, my jacket and helmet was covered in blood, poop, and feathers. I was glad I was wearing my jacket with armor!

Ahh I hate being talked to! Definitely a gtfo moment 😬
Freakiest thing for me was when I ran out of gas in a very rural area, it was my first time out of the city on a new to me bike and it didn't have a gas gauge. The seller told me he fills up every 250km and to restart the odometer when I fill up to keep track, but this was just over 150km when I ran out. I stopped just past a house and a man came out. I was super alone with no way to call for help, no way out. Thankfully he got me enough gas to get me to the closest station and was genuinely helpful, but I was very aware of how vulnerable I was in that moment and filled up every 150km regardless after that!

In 2016 I was on a solo ride from Cincinnati, Oh to CA via US Rt. 50 then returned via US 20 from Newport, OR through Yellowstone, back to Toledo, OH on US 20. When riding through Yellowstone I crossed Yellowstone Lake bridge, traveling beside a bison close enough to touch him. But I didn't. I was on my Harley and he couldn't have cared less. Everyone else was passing him but they were in cages. Yellowstone is a beautiful place.

As a female solo rider, I've experienced the "creepy guy encounter" too and you're right to state that is the most uncomfortable situation a biker girl can get in to (apart from an accident, of course). Better to move on, like you did.
Only, those are moments I will get irritated and certainly very mindful of my surroundings but the most scared I've been was during a night ride in the Spanish mountains, back in 2002.
No guardrails on the side of the road, absolutely no lighting (except for my tiny little headlight) and nothing but steep precipices and tight curves you don't see coming. It would have been a glorious ride by day but in the pitch black it was... well, a lot less enjoyable.

Super enjoyed this video , really enjoy hearing about other biker’s adventures! Yes going across Nevada on Hwy 50 with my daughter on the back of our 96 Goldwing we came to Baker Nev and found a room but refused to stay there , decided to press on to Medford Utah , it was night and the wind was crazy as we started down this road we discovered it was open range so there were cattle just everywhere, finally got to Medford and got a room , the clerk asked if we came from Baker and they said the wind was taking roofs off and blowing trucks around . I’ll never forget that night . Thanks for what you do 👍😎

Was in Sturgis in 2004. Riding through Custer S.P. with my 10 year old son on the back. There was 3 adult Bison and 2 calves in the ditch on the right side of the road so, traffic was moving at a crawl so everyone could see them. Well, they decided to cross the road right in front of me. When the last one came up it was close enough I could smell him. He gave us a look like f**k off but kept on walking. I had already grabbed my sons jacket to toss him off to the side if the Bison had turned. Scary indeed. Thanks for sharing!

  • @ridesar

Stay safe Jess. Thanks for sharing. I've watched many of those episodes on the channel. My closest wildlife encounter on the bike was a cow moose and her baby. Fortunately I had some room and just twisted the throttle to get clear. But when the animal is bigger than you & the bike combined it is... Impressive. Even as a guy doing Adv stuff, my risk assessment when solo is far more conservative than when I am with a buddy or group. Solo travel carries higher risk, even for guys, if something goes sideways. This is especially true in remote areas far from ready help. It is only sane to manage risk differently.

I’ve got advice for you doing my third iba ride. Was going for my ss 2000. Decided Greeley CO to Houston Tx in August first mistake 116° in TX. Let’s just say the ground is not a good place to nap. I look for areas that I can use as an area to take a nap. Let’s say concrete picnic tables aren’t comfy. Laid down on the ground middle of the night. Slept for about a hr woke up feeling things crawling on me. Turned out I laid next to a fire ant hill not thinking and very tired. Woke up quickly got back on the bike. CO state line face was swelled bad. Got back to Greeley got to go to the hospital with an allergic reaction. Did 2039 miles in 44 hrs

Ok. First off....this is your channel and you can post anything you want! Or feel for that matter so don't let the negative comments from earlier persuade your thoughts. I love your content and genuine personality overall. As a 40yr old harley rider with a wife and daughter......i stress to them trust you instincts and PROFILE people! Really...hurting a strangers feelings over getting out of a dangerous situations that's making you uncomfortable.....no brainer. I was born and raised in the hills of east tennessee and have seen the poorest and the most drugged riddled parts around there. Lots of great people and places mixed in between it all as it is and most places around the country. But you have to know what to look for....they way someone acts...the things they say....all have there intentions buried in them subconsciously. Even as a fellow rider i would have never approach a solo female rider unless there was a clear sign of distress. Just common curiosity. As soon as he got out of the truck all your reactions were appropriate. 100%
As for my scariest moment riding....splitting bambi in half at 60mhp 2 up and staying upright was probably it. Still a better day than last time i got caught out in the rain! But that's just me....

I did a solo ride last year, left real early heading north. I eneded up riding through some of the heaviest fog I have ever seen. That caused me to get soaking wet, coupled with very low temperatures, I was borderline hypothermic and had a very hard time controlling my bike. I had to pull off the highway and find a Walmart to get more layers on. Took many hours to warm up

Way back in another life time early 70s was reading bike magazines, man i can do that. Went out bought a brand new Kawasaki 350 S2 two stroke. Never was on a motorcycle before. They delivered it to my home told me how to start it were brakes were and they were gone. Well i got it started and then few minutes later drove it into a fence. After that started to get a little confident lol. When at a stop and then starting i would pull wheels off the ground by not leading forward. Any way 250 miles later crashed it in a curve going to fast broke my leg dislocated my shoulder all this when i was on a permit.

My personal favorite was the guy that checked into the room next to me in Carson City wearing an AOS mask, with a plexiglass face shield over it, a fisherman's hat, and long hippie hair. The hair apparently helped seal the sides of the shield and the hat sealed the top I guess. He proceeded to unload half a dozen large tanks of oxygen, plus a couple of other tanks with other color codes, into his room. Then he unloaded a cardboard box full of household cleaners. For the encore he Windexed off the door handles and trunk lid of the car. I told the guy at the front desk and he said I was his eyes and ears, and if I "heard anything suspicious" to let him know and he'd take it from there. What was I exactly going to "hear" prior to the mushroom cloud??? I called the Carson City P.D. and said I don't know what the deal is here but you might want to check it out. I don't know if they showed up or not. I was beat and went to sleep...should have gone to a different hotel I guess but everything was booked except for $400 rooms. He came out the next morning and put everything back in the car. Thing is, he did have California plates so that explains a good portion of it...

Bears in TN where people stopped blocking the road and was walking up to the momma bear. No protection no where to go.

I don’t take motorcycle trips alone. For a female I feel like it’s a very bad idea for a lot of reasons. Scariest thing that’s happened to me on a motorcycle was last summer in Brookfield MA I was riding with a friend she was a bit behind me and as I turned a very sharp corner there was a black bear in the middle of my path on my side of the road and he or she was confused on which direction to go. I feel lucky to not have gone down trying to avoid hitting it. He was off in the woods by the time my friend got around the corner. Had to stop and take a breather for a while I was shaking and pretty freaked out. Riding for five decades and that was the scariest thing I can recall.

All good learning experiences that make you a better rider and traveler. As for "paranoia", I don't see it that way. I see it as due caution in your position and well done. So, scariest things on a ride... like going through Texas on I-40, seeing the sky overhead turn from cloudy to storms and hearing tornado warnings on the radio... but they were being announced by county and I had no idea what county I was in! BTW, that ride taught me about why waterproof gear... isn't; especially helmets and gloves. Or being in Southern California on Highway 58 heading west to Tehachapi in September when it unexpectedly started to rain and then snow. I had to be somewhere and couldn't turn around and go back down the hill to a hotel so I wound up following a semi (not too close!) so I could ride in his wheel tracks. Final one - on a trip down U.S. 93 in eastern Nevada when our group came around a corner and just about ran into a mama elk and her baby (who looked like it was darn near as big as any of our bikes!) and we had a standoff - Mama wasn't going to move until she was good and ready. Fortunately, Mama decided we weren't worth running over and walked away. Keep riding, keep learning and hope to see you out on the road!

    Good subject.
There are at least two negative comments about your cold and wet, and cold riding experiences. As someone that rides motorcycle, downhill skies, whitewater kayaking & rafts, hikes and does other outdoor activities I find their comments ignorant and annoying. Those experiences were hazardous. Hypothermia is dangerous. It slows reaction and has other negative effects on our riding. Also joints get stiff when cold. I have seen a motorcycle dropped when a rider's knee was too stiff to move because of how cold their knee was. And I have heard similar stories of other near drops. Being cold is hazardous not just uncomfortable. People that say differently are ignorant of it hazards.
A stressful experience of mine was traveling with a novice passenger in windy cool weather. The ride to the concert at the Gorge amphitheater two days earlier was sunny and warm, almost hot. The return trip was very wind. To keep my passenger from getting even more stressed we got off the interstate and made frequent stops. She was also getting cold. (The waitress at first stop telling stories of semi trucks being blown over by wind didn't help.) The wind was really bad. But what was concerning me more was possibly hitting snow in Snoqualmie Pass. The slow travel was pushing our crossing of the pass towards sunset or later. Rushing her would have made her more stressed. I also didn't want to tell her my concerns for the same reason. We crossed Snoqualmie Pass shortly after sunset. It was raining. I think the temperature was pretty close to freezing. That was Memorial day weekend 23 years ago this weekend. Just for reference Snoqualmie Pass recieved some snow at night two days ago. So snow is possibility Memorial day weekend.

Better be safe than sorry. I am a guy, not riding a motorcycle but I have had some moments where on solo travels , have definitely had heart in mouth. Like doing a Subway Transfer in Berlin, late at night , in was from appearances a very sketchy area, I was hyper vigilant, did not finally relax, until I had actually reached the door of my Accommodation. Or getting of the train, in the centre of Paris and seeing fully armed Soldiers ( Paratroopers ?) patrolling the Station, and me having an Oh my God moment. Or camping in the bush in the middle of a Storm with branches and stuff falling from trees all around, definitely a restless night there.

Jess, don't get sexist, men get the same from unwanted attention from undesirable or should I say sketchy characters looking for an easy mark. Whether to mug, harm or kill. Best thing is to get the heck out of there. If you do stop, make sure there are other people around and if it is at night be sure you are in a well lit, heavily traveled area. Yes, there are times we need to get to ourselves to regroup or collect our thoughts and plans but do that at a coffee shop or cafe... heck even a hotel/motel lobby even if it is not where we intend to stay. Good subject matter and keep up the great content. Stay safe man or woman!!!

My scariest moment happened in the middle of the Nevada desert near Eastgate along a deserted highway.
I was racing to get home at sundown, hoping to beat a thunderstorm. Even told my fiancée to keep dinner warm.
Just past my high beams, I saw some shadows in the road. By the time I slowed down from FJR 1300 speeds, I rode through a herd of a dozen cattle.
Having a cow tail, adjust the mirror while overheating my brakes was the scariest moment on my bike.

I would have also been terrified with the Bison. It was great that the SUV moved over and allowed you space to move behind/to the side of it giving you some protection. I would say my 3 scariest moments occurred on the same trip coincidentally doing my own version of an iron butt for a charity ride. First was at 5am and rode over the crest of a hill to 6 wallabies below the crest so had to emergency brake and luckily didn't hit any and lucky i didnt get rear ended by my partner who followed in the car. Second was about 5 minutes later, where another driver saw us coming, moved to the middle of the small country lane and deliberately high beamed us, blinding me completely and attempted to push us off the road (we were very visible, I was wearing high vis and led light up tutu, plus my partners car), and the third I had another wallaby run in but this time it actually hit my side mid jump and I instinctively kicked it and managed to keep the bike upright and steady and only minor bruising to myself but my bike suffered some injuries. My partner didn't realise I hit it until I pulled over, all he saw was a spinning wallaby 😅

Last Fall, I was about an hour and a half south of Rock Hill South Carolina and road into the worst storm I have ever seen. I was on an Electra Glide and couldn't see twenty feet in front of me. I've never driven a car in rain that hard. I just followed the tail lights of the car in front of me. I was a drowned rat when I made it to Rock Hill. About the guy in the truck. Always trust your instincts. You were right to leave. 👍

I was on my Scrambler and pulled into a community park, and drove down to a secluded part of the park and I think I drove up on a drug deal. They were trying to get me off the bike but I kept going.

We got backed over at a bridge under construction near Harrison, OH. We pulled up behind a van as they waited for the traffic signal to turn green and allow us to navigate the bridge. As we pulled up we made sure to stay left/ near center so the driver would see our headlight in their mirror. As we as stopped and waited I'm guessing the driver decided they'd back up and try to trigger ther traffic sensor again. The reverse lights came on and by the time it registered to us what they were doing they backed over our Honda. They seemed totally oblivious to us screaming at them and blasting the horn at them. They ended up leaving ther scene. Luckily we got the plate number and the state patrol ended up picking them up as the you also local to the area. They ended up being twice the legal limit on alcohol. It has made me extra vigilant since that day. Been a relatively uneventful last 30 yrs of road riding since.

My buddy and I met some of my friends at a camp in the mountains of Pennsylvania. The next day we're riding 79 south towards Pittsburgh and got caught in an absolute deluge! We were doing 55 in bumper to bumper traffic and the only thing I could see was the taillights in front of me. I just remember thinking if something is lying in the road I'm a goner! Luckily we made it to an under pass and let the storm pass.

Getting rear ended by someone with no business driving a cage. Didn't drop it. $3000.00 damage. Just came from a bike blessing. Ironic yet I know that saved me. Pay attention people. Leave an escape route

That last scenario would be uncomfortable situation for an unattractive large male like myself, let alone you. Glad it all worked out. I'm lucky, in the few odd situations I've been in that were uncomfortable, it helped to be big, ugly, and on a less than desirable bike for stealing.

Did you contact the helmet supplier, to address the wet inside issue ? They are a big international supplier and your experience is important, maybe, just maybe they would listen and fix the issue, I'd like to think so, if not, they are going to lose !
