  • This MALFUNCTION had dangerous consequences... The final episode of "Jess Goes West" is here!! I was shocked and deeply upset to discover a major failure in a critical part of my riding gear. This has since been remedied in recent weeks. Documenting this trip has been one of the highlights of my riding career. Pushing my limits and striving to find a happy balance in my mental health and travel skills.

Love your persistence, Jess. Yes it’s best to stop when you can’t see and stay dry. Was stuck in a miserable rain storm about 15 years ago and my trip had an unfortunate 4 hour addition to it when the rain forced a bridge closure. Had to turn around, backtracked 2 hours through the worst of the rain again. From that moment it changed almost everything I did to prepare for long rides. Glad you arrived safe. As always, “Keep scootin’!”

Especially on a motorcycle it's better to take a break because your back hurts and it's a different style of road trip. Then just getting in your Toyota RAV4 and doing a hundred miles. But if you're doing a long long road trip in a car or motorcycle taking a 30 minute break is always good

When I am not riding my bike ( Which is rare) I always ride 3 to 4 car lengths behind a biker to literally watch his/her 6. 9 out of 10 riders understand my actions and give me the Victory sign when I pull away. Be that guardian Angel! Protect that rider… Sometimes YOU are that rider.

Agree! Solo female riding at night on a busy highway, tractor trailers, in thunderstorm, impaired vision with fogged visor, then stopping on highway under an over pass. Just my opinion, way too much. Watch some youtube videos, only takes 1 idiot, 1 mistake to cause significant harm & death. Got to watch out for the ever present 'get-there-itis'; it can make otherwise smart people do goofy things. Ride safe.

Back in the day I rode a 1976 Liberty Edition SuperGlide (kick start only) which held 2 1/2 gallons of usable fuel before going into reserve. I learned to stop every 100 miles since the SuperGlide got 50 MPG's. I rode that motorcycle for 10 years, putting 96K miles on it, with just routine maintenance. With my current 2007 Fatboy I still stop every 100 - 125 miles to refuel, and take about a 15 - 20 minute break. Riding in the rain is a real pain for sure, glad you made it safely. I am fortunate to still be on two wheels at 71 years of age. I plan to put a Frankenstein trike kit on my Fatboy in the near future. Wishing you the very best on your motorcycling adventures.

I make it a point to stop every two hours. I just did a trip to the Islamorada in the Florida Keys from North Carolina and I stopped for gas every 118 miles (+/-) and did 825 miles going down in one shot and 831 back north in one shot. Those little breaks every two house were a god send and made the ride very tolerable. No pain, no discomfort and I wasn't toasted when I arrived at my destinations. The trip down and the trip back both took me 15 hours. I don't think I'll do the same mileage when I go to Sturgis next year, but I'll probably cap it at 500 per day....... maybe. Oh and I also used a Camelbak and having that water was a very welcomed addition to the ride.

With an ADV or dual-sport bike, you can stand up occasionally, which really makes things nice. Cruiser seating position always gives me backaches.
I carry some towel paper soaked in Rain-X in a Ziplock bag. And I usually pretreat visor (outside only!) and camera lenses with Rain-X before every ride, even if it's not going to rain.
The Ziplock is for when you keep cleaning the visor or lenses, you remove the Rain-X and I can then reapply. Makes a world of difference.

I felt your sadness when you said "Jess Goes East. Time to head home." I know you were ready to go home and eager to see Jordan, but it means the end of an epic journey to fantastic, few away places and you're sad that it's coming to an end. I totally get it and I was sad with you.
Jess... please lace up your boots tighter. If you drop your bike, your ankles will thank you. Oh and NEVER use a gas station cleaner, either the tool or the fluid. Use plain water and microfiber cloths. The ammonia in the cleaner will ruin plastic over time and the squeegee and cleaner thingies will probably scratch the fuck out of the plastic. Trust me on this.
I will ride in almost any rain or weather, except icy roads and if I can't see. You have to be able to see. Sorry that helmet totally sucked for you, but I know you have already upgraded to a Shoei Neotec II which I hope is working great. Although I know you probably paid a small fortune for it. Shoei's aren't cheap.
Any port in a storm. Good move to go for the hotel.
That was nice of you not to hug Jordan in your soaked gear. lol.

Stopping on the shoulder is dangerous too. You don't want to get off into wet grass and mud when it's raining. Under an overpass the paved part of the shoulder is sometimes wider, you're out of the pouring rain, your lights reflect on the walls (at night), drivers are somewhat more alert to see that you're stopped and off the road.

Not fun when the visor leaks like that at all. We ducked into a pizza shop in Vermont to wait it out and get on the back side of the storm. The kids in the shop let us stand near the oven to dry out. Needless to say they were well compensated that day. Looking forward to your next adventures. Enjoy the cruise!

  • @locomotiveengineer4779

Sometimes we have to press on and not let the rain stop us, but other times it gets too heavy and we have to stop, even if it's underneath an overpass. Many say stopping underneath an overpass is dangerous but if you don't like riding without a visor, I can see why you'd stop. Now get that Iron Butt stuff submitted so you can get that certificate.

Good stuff for stopping on time Jess. In the Netherlands we have a "rule" which is really more a good habit for yourself an other drivers or riders it says like every 2 hours you drive/ride take a 15 mins break. This to prevent getting tired in your sights etc. Granted, I don't do this whilst driving a car all the time cause I can drive longer without feeling fatigued or something. But if I take a longer one way trip, say 3 hours or more i'll have to stop and either eat, drink or pee anyway, kinda like an alarm clock sometimes lol.

Seems fair and logic. I wouldn't either, i'd probably use visor cleaner stuff for the windshield or just soap where you wash the bike with also or something. But what I approve is stopping on time whether it be at a gas station to stretch, fuel up, drink, eat or toilet break or waiting out the rain under a overpass for safer travels.

I am even starting to feel the cold ... so rule of thumb is the temperature as to be the same as my age lol... yes I am a warm weather rider now days lol. Btw 1k is to commended . On a trip with good weather it's a long run. You earned that patch. This might be a silly question. But do you submit any of your adventures in to HOG for them to put in the magazine ?
Well good run... keep the breeze in your knees and wind in your hair...and above all the rubber side down.

I ride with my husband, separate bikes. We stop every hour or so. Most times just a quick 10 mins. Stretch the legs, take off the helmet, talk shit about whatever just happened and hop right back on. It's amazing how refreshed you feel. We ride for hours. Once we pushed it to a little over 2 hours and we both agreed it was a bad idea lol
Even if we stop for 5 mins, we like to stop. No riding at night if we can help it. He doesn't care but like you, astigmatism and low visibility is not my jam lmao! I have a 2021 Road Glide special in billiard red "lady rose" and he has a black 2022 road Glide ST "brother Blade"

Jess I love your content! Been watching for along time. Worrying about you burning out. Your a tough women rider. You handle that big Harley a true champ. I'm turning 63 in a couple of days and have three bikes. I've been wanting to tour on my FJR 1300 for years now, about the time you started. Hope to meet you one day.

I recommend a helmet with a photo chromatic visor, they are so awesome, no need for sun glasses. I have a Bell Race Star DLX which I love other than the fact it is impossible to drink out of. It is carbon fiber and super light.

Jess i would never clean my windshield with a gas station squeegee. My friend's buddy did it to his windshield and car's use them to bath their car's. Long story short it scratched the crap out of his windshield. Get some bugslide and a microfiber towel and use that on you're windshield and helmet face shield. After you do it witch will clean them very nice it will be easier to do it the next time as the bugs don't stick as well after cleaning and coating. You also can use it to wipe the bike down and works very well on motor as you spray it on the black and leave it on it will dry and blow off. Just don't use it on the seat and grips and anything else you don't want slippery.

The problem with North America is that is most beautiful on the West Coast and beautiful on the East Coast and interesting in between, if you take the slower routes. I find the make time routes to be a little numbing, so your breaks are totally understandable. If you have time and choose your back highways carefully the middle of North America has a great deal to see.

you're killing it Jess. yes those modular helmets are funny in the rain I've been told. I'd never buy one. my Shoei RF1400 has been pretty solid under the rain. it's not as "convenient" as being able to open and close your face to eat or drink, but I don't get wrecked in the rain 👍

  • @Havanorange
    @Havanorange Před rokem

When it's raining hard enough, it's not even going to matter which helmet you have. Any helmet is going to get that inner visor fog one way or another, because enough water gets in through the vents or from underneath. So you'll need to open the visor and put on some glasses to be able to see. When I remember, I carry an extra pair of safety glasses in my chest pocket for that, or for if I want to ride visor-up to get more air.

if you are riding and not enjoying the ride, then what is the point of risking your life for something you dont want to do?
In a car you can move around, change positions, switch hands...
On a bike the only break your get is on secondary roads stopping at intersections, you get a few seconds to stand up
