- Hi everyone! In today's video, I will be unboxing A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, Folio Society Edition. Yes that's right! Similar to The Cosmere leatherbound books by Dragonsteel, @TheFolioSociety edition of A Song of Ice and Fire is one of my most coveted special edition. I've seen this edition hovering around the net for years now, but I've never seen it in person. And let me just say, nothing top the experience of seeing it in person. The artworks by Jonathan Burton and the overall production value are just immense. Thank you so much to AdiRaven, one of my patrons, for giving me this gift. I will cherish it!

Traditionally, just the top side of a book was gilded (in this case sprayed) because it would protect from dust coming from above. In this case it doesn't really matter since it's inside a slipcase anyway, but that is the tradition.

Wow! Truly stunning and such a kind gift. I recently got the Folio Society edition of Neverwhere. I’ve have others of their books but Neverwhere is my favorite of mine. You have sure tempted me though. ASOIAF could not be more beautiful.
The Folio Society edition of Neverwhere looks stunning. If I'm a huge fan of the book, I would go for it, no doubt! And yeah, this is most likely the best edition of A Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire I've ever seen! 🤩

Beautiful books and that map is deserving of a frame. I’m finally going to read ASOIAF in 2023 and may have to consider investing in these editions.

That edition is SO BEAUTIFUL! I have been eyeing the Song of Ice and Fire Folio editions. But I know myself, if I get one I have to get them all. I recently purchased my first Folio Society book. One of their new editions this year is The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. The text is in red or green. Red for Fantastica, green for our world. I wish I still had my red/green edition from childhood, but I do have a later red/green edition. The illustrations in the Folio edition are gorgeous. The edges have Falkor the Luck Dragon flying in pale orange and white and all 3 edges are decorated so. I own thousands of books, but only in the last 5 or so years have I been able to start getting special editions. I also have the Dragonsteel Way of Kings and I did the Sanderson Kickstarter that will start arriving in January, thanks to my husband. I recently moved and am looking forward to displaying my special editions once I start organizing the bookshelves.
You're not wrong... I'm already thinking of getting the next book in the series hahaha! The Neverending Story published by Folio looks so good, too!! And I have a copy of The Way of Kings Dragonsteel edition; it's one of my favorite books and special editions of all time! Like you, I did the 4 secret novels Kickstarter and I'm waiting for my first delivery in January! :D

you dont get dust on the bottom and the sides of the book if stored outside of the slipcase. the treatment on the top pages is for dust protection.

Folio books are things of joy and beauty. I have recently bought Something Wicked This Way Comes and Rebecca, and both are absolutely stunning. Secondhand bookshops do sometimes get older Folio books and I was lucky enough to get a copy of The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad still in its cellophane wrapper, for £3.
Oh my god, it would be amazing to spot a secondhand copy of Folio Society books that cheaply. They're indeed super beautiful! 🤩
@@PetrikLeo They are around - at least in the UK. However, they tend to be older books. I have picked up some relatively recent ones (Rumpole, for example), but the joseph Conrad was a bit special.
I’ve had some of my Folio ASOIAF books for a few years now, they’re still as pristine as they were when I bought them, I’ve read through each once then had them on my shelves.

@@PetrikLeo If you’re looking for another good read and set from Folio I would also recommend The Farseer Trilogy. A beautiful addition and it looks real nice with the blue of the ASOIAF editions.

Nice! I have been purchasing books from Folio Society for years, and they produce amazing quality books. I do want to the Folio edition of ASOIF, but I have made a promise to myself that I will not buy any more ASOIF books until GRR Martin complete the series.
I really would love to buy more books by Folio Society. I hope I can afford books published by them someday! As I said, it's not cheap for me to buy their books based on where I live! :')
I am never going to try and tell someone else that their enjoyment of a book/series, or the joy they derive from a special edition of a book/series, is or isn't "worth it." Personally? I would never pay any amount of money for something by Martin; not a favorite of mine. But you dangle a special edition by C.J. Cherryh, or Glen Cook, Steven Erikson, Andre Norton, or Roger Zelazny (to name but a select few) in front of me and I will (and have) pay/paid substantial sums of money for series that many readers do not enjoy. And I am extremely happy with said purchases ;-)~ I hope that you are at least as happy with any and all special editions that you've bought or been gifted with!

They're worth the price. I asked Folio Society and they said they will continue to reprint them if they sold out, so you're good to take your time on them! :)
I love the Folio Society editions of ASOIAF, but it didn't cost me quite as much living in the UK. Don't read the brochure, Petrik - you'll end up wanting to buy more ! ( if you do ... I'd recommend Neverwhere and The Neverending Story - both beautiful editions )
ps.I once read that some publishers only spray the top edge of a book because that's where dust collects, and this helps to hide it.
I haven't read the brochure yet... Too scared of the repercussion hahaha. But yeah, I saw the shipping fee is so much lower in the UK, you can even pick them up from the store. And no $50 custom fee! But yeah, I hope one day I can get more books in ASOIAF published by them.

Bro ... 🧿 I'mma leave this Nazar bead here because my envy might hurt you. Man even though I haven't even bothered picking up physical editions of the asoiaf, those folio books looks so insanely good. But I'm afraid I'd want every single one and that I'd never be able to finish the collection because of GRRM.

Thank you! And yeah! I think so, too. Some have mentioned I should do this because they want to see my reaction. Maybe next time I'll combine them unboxing and flip-through together. For now, I think, after my reread, I will do a review of A Game of Thrones, both the book and the edition, with a flip-through video! 😃
Someone could tell me why this edition has 2 books for every book on Ice and Fire series? And which edition is better (this one or the 20th anniversary edition)
By making it two volumes, the book is less heavy and more comfortable to read. As far as production value goes, this one is above the 20th anniversary edition in almost every way. It's much more expensive, though.

They are really nice, but the pictures, sometimes a picture will be off a couple of pages. So you have to flip back a page or two to see the image that follows the text. Its annoying for such an expensive book.
Yeah, you're right. I checked and I'm confused why the images are not put RIGHT on the text where the events happened. Weird. xD

I rather have 1st edition. Which I do. I think it depends what kind of collector you are. Booktube seems to focus on special editions, but it’s not for everyone.
I love special editions so much. Actually, come to think of it, I never care about first edition. This one I have right now is second printing. But my edition can be 10th or 50th edition, as long that I have the artworks and high quality paper etc I'll be happy.
