  • I am finally the proud owner of a Amstrad CPC 464 (just in time for its 40th birthday)!
    I wanted some decent games to try, so looked no further than Amstrad Action magazine to help me by looking at the ten highest rated "MasterGames" they ever reviewed. To be honest, they are all blimmin brilliant too!

    I loved this! Head over Heels was the first game I ever completed on any system (at about 75% though, I could never do better than that!).
    I also remember a game called Duel where you played a wizard that had to fight his brother. You went around a maze collecting herbs, which in different combinations gave different spells. So bloody difficult but great fun!

    I still have my old amstrad cpc 464 with green screen, and it still works great after 40 years. I gave it a good spring clean and even played some Turrican 2 last week to celebrate its birthday. So many hours and fond memories I don't think I could ever part with it ❤

    Great video, for most of those games I had moved from my cpc onto the 16bits.
    The games I remember, so many would be earlier, are Renegade (and Target Renegade), exolon, Cybernoid, Gryus, Elite, ikari Warriors, ATF, Amagedon man, and one I discovered much later: Chase HQ.

    4:29 No Joke... I think I genuinely used to pull that face when My Parents bought me my Amstrad CPC 464 for Christmas ... It wasn't the Computer - OH NO! My Dad and My Grandad both GOT SODDING HOOKED on the Amsoft Fruit Machine Game, The Wild Bunch, and Harrier Attack... I COULD NOT GET ON MY OWN SODDING COMPUTER!!!!
    It was even worse when I upgraded (?) to an Atari ST and I bought PIRATES! - The bloody high score table was just full of E TEACH... My Dad being a History buff ... And Yes, He completed that game SO MANY F**KING TIMES as Kings Counsel ... I was lucky to make Baron!!!

      Chase HQ is actually superior on the Spectrum, although it doesn't look as nice. Chase HQ on the CPC is closer to the arcade game, but the gameplay is shallow and its physics are cartoony. Chase HQ on the Speccy feels much more like actual racing.

  • @BottIsNotABot
    @BottIsNotABot Před 2 měsíci

    Some really good looking games there. Shows what the system could do, and that there did appear to be a lot of lazy ports from the Spectrum. I remember playing Freddy Hardest on a friends CPC 6128 and being ever so slightly jealous that my Spectrum didn't look or sounds this good!

    The Amstrad was brilliant if the game was written directly for the machine as you Showed with Savage.
    The machines strength was its colour palette especially the oranges, so lush.
    Games to look at if you want to see it at it's best are Renegade, which now has an updated version, Gryzor, Trantor the last stormtrooper and the Dan Dare games.
    There was an Arcade conversion of Slap Fight called Alcon in it's other region's name which is stunning.
    You getting a nice little collection of retro stuff Stu, the Amstrad looks like its been looked after.
    Another well put together video and love the editing especially the text introducing each game in the amstrad font with the typing noise. Little things like that are fantastic and add to the overall presentation 👍

    If you want more (better) suggestions for CPC games to cover check Xyphoe's community; you'll end up with more suggestions than you know what to do with.
    I don't think many of these would be in my personal top list, and Amstrad Action did sometimes massively underrate some real games (Dr Destructo is easily one of the best games on the platform for example)
    Some of these simply haven't aged well also. The Freescape games were revolutionary at the time, even Doom didn't have that level of 3D in terms of being able to fully move around objects in 3D space, but now you can simply take that for granted the games are left with very little to offer. Simpler games, which just got everything they did right on the other hand were sometimes overlooked at the time; personally I can spend a long time playing Beach Buggy Simulator for example (and it doesn't look like Amstrad Action even bothered to review that one) - admittedly it has no sound fx, only music, but that was the case for many games.

    Towards the end of the CPCs life review scores went to hell. I remember Amstrad Action gave Final Fight something like 93%. Golden age of CPC gaming for me was from about 88 to 90. Early CPC games were primitive and after 1990 nobody really cared. Standout CPC titles for me were games like Batman the Movie, Robocop, Renegade, Gryzor and my favourite Rainbow Islands. Games which actually used the CPCs capabilities and didn't move like treacle.

    @Yesterzine Před 3 měsíci

    That's a slightly depressing list tbh, just for the number of them that are better on other machines. The CPC had great exclusives that apparently just didn't get as much love from AA.

    • @SebsPlaceYT
      @SebsPlaceYT  Před 3 měsíci

      It's interesting that Amstrad Action laid it on quite heavily about Spindizzy being a CPC game and that it was a breakthrough moment but as you rightly point out, didn't back this up with top end scores of other exclusives or games written for the CPC first. I do think a lot of these games are equal to or better than other 8 bit versions on the whole though but I agree with Rick Dangerous. It's OK, but it's openly mean to the player, fiddly to control and offers very little that a million platformers before it did better.
