With so many iconic dance sequences competing for a spot on the list, I'm not surprised that one of my favorites was missing. And perhaps it's a stretch to call it "great" but I absolutely LOVE the beautifully choreographed "traditional" dance performed by Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in The Sound of Music. Seamlessly inserted into the story, it nevertheless moves the plot forward and is, for my money, one of the sweetest dance routines ever put on film.

That is not true at all, that it was done "without rehearsal". The Nicholas brothers may very well have been the greatest dancers of all time, but even for them there is a 0% chance that they could have done that dance without rehearsing it. And they never claimed they did. What they said was they didn't rehearse the jump splits on the stairs because those were too dangerous to do over and over again. Other people said they didn't rehearse the dance at all. The Nicholas brothers didn't say that. And me saying that is in no way dissing the Nicholas brothers, that dance scene is the greatest dance scene I've ever seen.

Of course it wasn't done in one take, it just isn't possible with film 🎥 because of the shots. Very really is anything filmed in one shot! Or one take! & Yes they rehearsed working out the routine. You have to! Even Donald O'Connor rehearsed & didn't shot his scene in "Singing In The Rain" his "Make Em Laugh!" routine is one of the most difficult and physical routines ever done! So while these guys could do this on stage in one go, you can't on camera! Even on a sound stage. That's what makes them spectacular! Knowing that someone doesn't need to be made to look better, they can do it without the extras! I love them all!!! And special kudos to the Nicholas Brother's!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 But here is a fun fact: if you want to see how damn good all the Black dancers were from that era watch "White Night's" because Geoffrey Hines does a number with most of the dude's who were still around! The beautiful ballet dancers in the beginning, in their soft long pink tutus and flowers in their hair. The Men lifting her across the floor seamlessly towards the camera. It seems simple, but it’s not. As a former dancer I can attest to this. All the subtleties in the movements and arm placements. I am rarely passionate about commenting on youtube but I truly cannot believe you entirely missed the Cyd Charisse number with Gene Kelly in the very same movie (Singing in the Rain) which is SOOOOO much better than the rain scene. I notice someone else mentioned it below (very wise :) ) and right now has 248 likes. It is probably the best dance scene of all time to probably millions. From my view, Cyd Charisse was the best dancer of all time (and Gene Kelly right up there with her). She did a similar number with Fred Astaire in Bandwagon. Again, just stunning to watch. Also I'd add the tango scene with Salma Hayak and Ashley Judd from Frida, as well as the Antonio Banderas number (also tango) from Take the Lead- (Wow!! ). The gym dance scene in West Side Story- I'm glad to see it there but what about I like it Here in America was every bit as good? Jerome Robbins was an amazing choreographer. And another that probably a lot of people don't know about is where the incredible Ann Reinking dances with the little girl in All that Jazz. I would place all of these in the top 5 for my book of truly gorgeous choreographer and performance. :) And thank you to the reader below who pointed out Mariam Lavelle. I have never seen anything like that ever- and in heels. I hope people check them out.

The Latin couple's dance in Saturday Night Fever is one of the most underrated dance in movies. Also, although America is the best movie dance ever, the dance in the gym is more important to the story.

So glad you framed Liza in your title, my favorite scene. Bob Fosse exudes sexuality. All these dance scenes do in a way. The Nicholas brothers tap dance is sheer perfection. All done in ONE TAKE! I can hardly wait for your up date featuring Fergie, Penelope Cruz, and All the dance scenes from NINE. Somehow you didn't give enough of CHICAGO dance scenes.

I knew, interviewed and worked with Fayard Nicholas in the last decade of his life. He was an extraordinary, light filled, human being. He told me he taught Michael Jackson how to do the Moonwalk. I also asked him how did he rise up from those amazing splits? He said, “well once you’re down, you just come on up!”
    Obviously, it worked for him.
    God Bless him.

One of the most UNDERRATED dance scenes in the movie 'TAP' is when all the greatest tap dancers, AND dancers of all time, come together to show Max how to really get down on the dance floor. Dancers like Sandman Simms, Jimmy Slyde, Sammy Davis Jr and Harold Nicholas of The Nicholas Brothers were maybe 80+ plus years of age and they showed they still got it!! A must to consider for UNDERRATED dance scenes in a movie.

I remember when I was once a Rum Tum Tugger understudy in, “Cats,” in high school which I practiced the dance to the point where I know the steps from memory. I am not a skinny kid, I am chubby. But when I auditioned for the part, the instructor said that even though I didn’t be the one who performs, my dancing was really, REALLY good to not have me as an understudy. My first time on stage was during my high school’s play production of, “12 angry men,” which I auditioned for because my younger sister was in the tech crew, who built the set.
