I watched Borg and McEnroe duke it out so many times in their primes. What a treat to see them together again and playing so incredibly well! Thanks for posting this celebration of the joy of a beautiful game.
Borg: 6 French Open titles and 5 Wimbledon titles. Borg is a legend. James Blake is an excellent tennis player, but not in a league with any of the other 3 on the court in this match.
I honestly think John mcenroe was better than Bjorn borg in terms of talent, I mean he was just so volatile, yes he didnt have the hardest serve, yes he always argued a call, but nobody play so beautiful at net like Mcenroe.
Not sure. I'm basing this on him being very fit before he left in 1986 3 more ? I'm 1980 he says he got tired to lose the fourth set at Wimbledon. So maybe that's 1 there. But would he have gone on to have the same results against Borg in the next three slams he played him in? In 1982 he had a poor year, but I'm not sure fitness was his problem. In 1984 be didn't lose the French due to lack of fitness In 1984 he was supremely fit. In 1985 he carried over some of that fitness, but was distracted by then. If he hadn't been, yes he would have moved as he did in 1984. Wimbledon 1985 - He would have beaten Curren? , but Becker? Maybe. But he wasn't training much in 84, remember. Perhaps some weights on legs (squats). His fitness came from all the doubles and singles wins, and maturity. I guess, If he'd focussed on fitness in 85 as his form was dipping, he would have beaten Lendl at the US Open . That's 2 total so far. In 1986, he concentrated on fitness, but too much. He over dieted. In 1987 he was off the rails, 88 similar. 89 a good year, and perhaps it's here where he could have done more fitness. But he got tired of the tour again. In 1992, his final year, he was finally nearly as fit as he was in 1984 and serving wise it was similar delivery and speed to net. And it showed in his results, but he still didn't get a grand slam. I agree with the idea that had fitness been at the forefront, especially after age 25, and had he had access to the knowledge that you can be great into your mid to late 30s, like the current players do, then he would have made different choices. If he had done, yes he would have achieved more up until 92 and beyond. But it didn't go like that and fitness wasn't his problem, it was leisure activities, love and family that were the problem. He took things too far away from tennis for the time, because they had less money and no real team support at the time to compensate with physio, analysis, coaching, strength and conditioning, psychology, training blocks etc,, but he could have stayed focussed instead. 2 more grand slams on fitness training based on his actual lifestyle , another 4 more if he had changed his lifestyle, and 5 more had he had the budget for coaching . I think. So you're right - hypothetically.
I liked this match. :D Here's my 2 cents regarding this for fun exhibition match- The marks of a champion: Ecstatic to play against fellow legends, smiling, but serious right from the start. Plays to win, hangs head when losing. Blake...well, he got serious towards the end, but he was goofy at the start. A sign of why he, despite being technically a great player, was never as consistent as the other 3. He is happy enough to be AMONG the best, but doesn't show signs of wanting to actually BE the best. Federer was as serious as one could be in a one set exhibition match, though a guy like McEnroe can get into your head even if you're a 13 slam champion. He is such a big presence on the court, and still has a bit of a doubles playing aura. If you dont hit a good one, you KNOW he's gonna do something with the ball. Pushes you to be aggressive potentially making mistakes. Borg was constantly showing his anticipation and reflexes the whole match, the sign of why he was a singles slam champion so many times, though his serve has always lacked for the doubles game. Federer and McEnroe have equal doubles serves. What McEnroe lacks in power and ace ability, he makes up for in angle, spin, and lefty-ness. If it had gone to a second set, I would have expected better serving and net play from Federer, raising his level, and Borg doing the same. Would have been a 3 set match at a slam for sure. Fun stuff. :D
Blake was a heck of a player and better in doubles than Roddick. it´s a europe vs usa kind of match so Blake is a nice choice, there is no american player of his stature in the pro tour. it does makes sense.
MrCappon1111 There should've been Sampras or Agassi or Connors. I don't know how you ignored all of them when you said "there's no american player of Blake's stature". Blake is no where close to Roddick who rose to Rank 1 and also won the US Open.
***** if you observe it´s a senior retired legend (Borg-McEnroe) with an active ATP player. at that time Blake was the best american active player. and he was a monster player. it´s kind of a Mixed Doubles Europe vs USA. pretty cool.
sundown005 ...then you turn to your team mate, one of the immortals in the game,...and yes he's bowing to you...great gestures of mastery, skill, sportsmanship, respect and acknowledgements.
This match was in 08. Blake was at or near to his top rank ever, which was #4 in the world. Number FOUR. Some of you noobs seem to think he was he was just some rank and file nobody who got this gig what, because of his complexion? He beat Roger that year at a pretty significant event - the effing Olympics. I think the idea is to have two "legends" (legendary but OLD guys) and two active ATP top talents. Would it have been more fitting to have Nadal instead of Blake, yes, of course, or maybe Sampras or Agassi (if you ignore the idea of pairing active and ancient players) but maybe they couldn't or wouldn't make it to this exhibition for any number of reasons? Blake was a good enough, if not ideal, alternative and as for actual playing level he fit right in at this stage of everyone's career (in doubles at least, he would have CRUSHED Borg or Mac in singles at this time).
How many stupid comments I read. To make balanced teams it was obvious don't let play another "legend" with McEnroe .... since he's been considered by the world the best double player of all time. Peter Fleming (The player with which he formed one of the strongest doubles of all time) declared that "the best double team in the world is John McEnroe with anyone else".
Sure, but Peter was actually way too humble there, since he was a great player himself (and reached the Wimbledon final in 1986 without Mac at his side!).
I’m not going to watch the entire match… but two GOATs versus Mac and who????? Blake was a fine enough player, but as in any early Gen 1.0 version of Sesame Street: “ One of these things is not like the other.”
Connors with McEnroe never liked each other. McEnroe once said in an interview that all though he respects Connors as a player, he is a huge asshole and has to control the court.
Don.- There is a confusion here. McEnroe won a record eight year end championship titles overall, the Masters championships three times, and the WCT Finals, a record five times. Also, he won 7 doubles.
what happened here?, Borg, McEnroe, Federer, I think the indicated tennis players had been Connors, Sampras or Agassi, instead of Blake!!, come on man!!, maybe Jim Courier, Michael Chang, at least Aaron Krickstein!!.....
I watched Borg and McEnroe duke it out so many times in their primes. What a treat to see them together again and playing so incredibly well! Thanks for posting this celebration of the joy of a beautiful game.
Then it wouldn't be usa
Caleb Downing ???
Borg still looking like a rockstar❤️.
3 legends and James Blake
Borg: 6 French Open titles and 5 Wimbledon titles. Borg is a legend. James Blake is an excellent tennis player, but not in a league with any of the other 3 on the court in this match.
hahahahahaha you are cruel!
MrPernell27 Never. If you just now a little bit about tennis you know borg. James blake comes way behinde him.
He beat Bjorn Borg and Roger Federer ....
yea the idea was to bring Nadal but he failed to appear
Who the hell is giving these legends thumbs down ? Can those people play tennis ?
hahahaha mortal kombat music! GOTTA LOVE IT
John McEnroe a legend...love his commentary at Wimbledon great fella x
legend
BB is always the Best!!
Bjorn Borg, you dumbass...
Best ever
Agreed. My favourite player of all time.
Also a very nice and humble guy, met him very early at a bakery on a Swedish island a couple of years ago. Actually stayed and talked a bit of tennis
Began looking at this, thought I was just going to watch just 3 minutes, ended up watching the full match being highly entertained.
Brilliant!
Campioni di altri tempi bello vederli in forma
Borg was the most elegant player I think I`ve ever seen,he just glided and floated over the court....just so elegant.
The most elegant double handed backhand I've ever seen.
I agree it was a special treat just to watch Borg play
I honestly think John mcenroe was better than Bjorn borg in terms of talent, I mean he was just so volatile, yes he didnt have the hardest serve, yes he always argued a call, but nobody play so beautiful at net like Mcenroe.
@@producedbysin6508 yes what an amazing net player ! He won the match
John, you did it one more time but Bjorn's class is amazing!
If Mac had taken fitness as seriously as a touring pro as he did as a senior player, he’d have won at least five more slams.
Not sure. I'm basing this on him being very fit before he left in 1986 3 more ?

McEnroe's net game is still quite impressive!
38 grand slams on this court.......
And James Blake
I liked this match. :D Here's my 2 cents regarding this for fun exhibition match-

like the way you read it.
John....fantastic player!!!!!
Kicking ass
That commute from Douglaston to the UWS for prep school wasn't easy. McEnroe embodied NYC in a way few ever have. Too bad he didn't run for mayor.
I didn't even see the ball but I enjoyed it anyway.
Sampras-McEnroe vs Federer-Borg it would have been more correct.
Yes
McEnroe is best doubles player of all time perfect game for double
This was cool. Nice to see Blake here among these legends.
JOHNNNNNN YESSSSSS!!!!!
What is Blake doing among these legends?
yeah he's a bit outclassed here lolol

Mac didn't get the memo that sleeveless shirts went out of style in 2003.
and he has wimpy looking white chalky arms that never should wear sleeveless in the first place.
+Gumball LastRally The only two players that looked cool in sleaveless were Del Potro and Michael Russell.
mrbobevans What about Monfils?
Rafael Nadal ♡
Mac still serving well..
Old McEnroe always seemed to have rather strange facial expressions as though waiting for someone to tell him to SMILE.......innit!!!!!
When Björn Borg himself bows before you... 23:54

Seriously the most funny thing I've seen in ages.
Must have been great fun!
certo che vedere Jhon è sempre tanta roba
This foursome has a combined 38 Grand Slam titles. But if you remove James Blake they have 38 Grand Slam titles.
さすがのフェデラーもボルグとマッケンローの前では霞みますな。
Bad camera angle for doubles....can't see the whole play. Should have kept it high, like they did once in a wile.
should have replaced Blake with Nadal.
Or Jokovic, but it wouldn't be US vs Europe then. This generation doesn't have any male US stars.
They should have brought in Andy Roddick.
Yes, Roddick would be the best option.
Or Roddick at least.

Agree
Le riprese nn consentono di gustare al.meglio lo spettacolo che resta cmq interessante. Grazie.
I love Borg
What's happen at 20:04?
31 slams on one side, against 7 on the other.....
What year is this?
spykiss72 Federer has 13 grand slam during the game so it was between late 2008 and early 2009, but I think in 2008
sorry for my bad English
Borg's backhand looked strong vs Blake.
I can see the stars, not the ball;-)
No balls were used in the making of this video.
Borg era un fenomeno
skip to 10:00 for start of play
Thanks
Most surprised the stadium isn't full!?
4 champions, 2 eras..... when was Balakey ever a champion?
Borg walked away at 26
Think of all the grand slams he would have won if he played as long as they are playing now
Borg and Fed -the two greatest of all time?
The three best I have seen in past 55 years were Borg, Laver and Federer. John McEnroe comes ever so close though. A genius.
No sir Djokovic is in there kid

I dont understand Blake being here..he never won a single grand slam title.
The others 3 are well deserving.
You idiot. McEnroe has played exhibitions alongside ATP players who never went within a bull's roar of winning majors. Many times.
Nothing to say! They still are real tennis players. Not as those hypersonics of this time...
Not fair.
Is McEnroe holding a wooden racket?
McEnroe magic ≧ Federer magic

Great tennis but terrible camera work.

Squint harder then lol
Brothers some persons comment against blake , i think this is rong, why are you insult good player .
I think McEnroe is also out of place here. Fed and Borg much much bigger than that baby complainer.
Well, who won the match again?
We all have our favorites, Never a fan of John. He was too much of a spoiled baby and whiner
Skip to 10:15.
Americans vs Swede that’s why

Blake wat an embarrassment
WTF IS BLAKE DOING IN THIS GROUP ? MUST HAVE BEEN AN EMERGENCY LAST MINUTE REPLACEMENT FOR RAFA...

It's more like: two teams of 60 and 40 yr. old players, and McEnroe using cheap mind-f*cking techniques, not uncommon for someone from NYC.
