They have to over-exaggerate to get things to show up on camera. How many times have I heard a TV show say a character has freckles, but when they're on screen, you can't even see them? Pink eye is generally just that, redness in the eyeball itself. But that's not going to show up on screen, so they made the whole area around the eye red, so it's visible. I know it's possible, but I find it far more unlikely that Amy was able to keep the pink eye in one eye. Both times I had it, I tried, but it inevitably moved to the other eye.

You typically see it most commonly in children (since they touch everything and aren’t as clean as adults), but then their parents get it, and it just spreads like wildfire. Put it this way, pink eye spreads faster than Covid.
It's funnier that way. Penny is the most beautiful, glamorous, sexiest, well dressed character on the show. And everyone else is already envious of her looks. So that just makes the rest of them even more resentful. Because if Penny did have pink eye it wouldn't really matter. She has nothing to lose. While Amy and Raj are screwed. And Howard and Bernadette have to have it because they are patient zero.
