    On my driving test, I was asked to park on the left on a road with pull-in parking areas marked “Residents’ Parking Only”. I chose to continue further up the road to find a more appropriate parking spot. The examiner asked me to explain myself and he was happy with my explanation. I didn’t receive a fault for the incident

    Another place never to park is in a space reserved for charging an electric car. These cars need these charging points to continue their journeys.
    Imagine yourself on an urgent journey and you suddenly find that you are low on fuel, you pull into a garage and find only one pump working - but there is a car parked there so you couldn't fill up - and the driver was nowhere to be seen and so could be there for 10 mins or 10 hours.

    Something I learned back in my driving lessons are dont park in the same way as someone else unless you know you are allowed to. In my mock test I was told to park up in an industrial estate. There were 2 cars parked up on the pavement so decided to do the same. Was told after I should of parked along side the kurb. From what I remember if a car was stolen you wouldn't copy them on the way they drove / parked

    Once many years ago I was given a friendly reminder by a police officer that it is illegal to park at night facing oncoming traffic and I have never done so since. He said it didn't matter whether your lights were on or off. It is in the Highway Code too: Rule 248 states; 'you must not park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space'.
    It seems however that it is one of those rules that is not often enforced, when I look around my locality, but in any case I wouldn't wish to be the cause of an accident or leave an excuse for an insurance company to dispute a claim should my parked car be hit.

    • @hikaru9624
      @hikaru9624 Před 4 lety +1

      Much like how it's illegal to reverse onto a main road. Bet many people have ruined the back end of their car reversing out of their drive onto the main road.
      It seems like a silly rule that night time parking though because no matter which way you're facing, if you have your lights on (low beam obviously. Why would you have your bright lights on when parked?) You're gonna dazzle oncoming traffic regardless of which lane they're on. Still that's the law so it's best just to obey it (and yes I do see the safety aspect of this rule).

      That said I know I'd pull over to my left and park up, if where I want to park is on my right then I'll just find somewhere to turn around or do a 3 point turn if possible then pull over on the left, but that's me and I just prefer doing that...if I haven't got the option of a car park that is.

    One point which got my attention was the parking on the kerb to allow room for a fire engine to get through and also allowing enough space on the pavement for a wheelchair user to pass by.
    My friend uses a wheelchair and is constantly having to deal with inconsiderate people in that regard. I wonder if maybe you could do a shorter video on that particular topic, because I imagine that would be a great video to share all over social media and be more digestable for those who don't have time to watch your longer videos for example? Parking on the pavement isn't illegal but driving on them is. So unless you can teleport, please don't advise people to park on pavements. Pavements are for pedestrians, not cars, it doesn't matter how much space there is. If you can't fit on the road, then you shouldn't be parking there at all.

    Ashley, you could say something about parking in a clearway. In Sheffield, most of the roads that contain tram lines are designated as clearways (for good reason, as parking on a tram line would cause serious disruption as the tram wouldn't be able to get past). But the clearway also extends about 10 metres or so into many of the sides roads. This catches lots of people out - there are no yellow lines on the road so it looks like you can park there, but if you are the wrong side of the circle clearway sign then you are parked illegally. This is a cash cow for Sheffield City Council as it seems to be a favourite place for the traffic wardens to patrol!

So basically I stay in a village and work in a shop on the main road, and because of people parking on the islands, buses and other big vehicles can’t get through. I would also like to mention, I am vice chairman of a group called, Ayclffe Road Management and School Safety, (ARMSS), we campaign for safety outside of schools. Each school has Mini Police ( pupils) in uniform and we still have the problem of drivers stopping on the school entrance markings, quite often these drivers give people abuse when approached, but photographs are taken and sent to the police. One group of drivers who are the biggest offenders are taxi drivers, there answer when told they can not stop on the school entrance markings is usually I’m a taxi driver I can stop anywhere, which of course they can’t.

    In Edinburgh city centre, many of the pavements have cellars under them. They are not designed to be able to take the weight of a vehicle. Some years ago whilst speaking with a director of the then Highways department, he mentioned that the previous day there was an accident on one of the bus routes and the bus company mentioned they had to use the pavement to get past. This meant inspectors had to be sent to check every cellar on that section of road.

      I can help you a little bit here! When on single track roads anything that looks like it could take a car (including the weight of it) safely is a passing place, this can include other people's drives as that might be the only space you have to pull into for some distance, ideally you shouldn't use other people's drives but you might not have a choice sometimes.
      Also if you come across someone on the single track road and what passing places that are there are on *your left*, who ever is closer usually yields and reverse back to the passing place. Although not law it is generally the rule and it's rather rude to force someone to reverse a long way when you have a passing place just seconds away from you.
      In short just be considerate to others when driving on single track roads...and done expect lorries to fit in tiny spaces.

    Loads of really great tips, thank you. Question- is it ok to park in a bus stop when you know there are no buses running?

    • @joebaker4116
      @joebaker4116 Před 3 lety +1

      Unless expressed by a sign, no.
      Some bus stops or stands (more likely) may have a yellow sign (much like the single yellow signs) with a small clearway circle at the top. This will read, "No stopping except buses between 7am & 5pm" or similar. Other stops, while not served by an active timetable are also safe pickups for coaches and other PSVs that may be running unpublished contracts, services and private hires.
      Where I work in Cambridge, we operate coach routes for workers. Some of the stops are not served by bus operators (the timetable board may say, no services operate from this stop or, school services only) but our runs are still registered with the council where we use these stops and often wait several minutes before moving on. These stops are vital for keeping the coach in a safe spot so we don't have to stop and wait elsewhere, blocking traffic and making it hazardous for other road users; sometimes there's no option but to sit in the middle of the road.
      Another stop we use is in a small town with a double parked, busy, poorly marked high street. The bus stop only has a flag pole and no road markings so, people park on and opposite it. Many mornings I have had to stop in the middle of the road (centerline running down the center of the coach) and load 20 children and process their fares. This understandably brings the town to a halt and is exacerbated by all the cars essentially wedging me in through poor forward planning. 10 mins later and some persuasive directing through the windscreen and we can get going again. Nearly always passing a lorry who is laughing at the ridiculousness of the whole mess.
      The same stands for private hires, I will always try to liaise with the group and arrange to pick-up from a bus stop or just past, if there's one nearby and I'm not obstructing a local service. It's just safer.
      If people stopped parking in bus stops it would save a lot of hazardous situations during busy periods, reduce accidents (I've seen a few, even had someone hit a coach by the driver's side as they went round but didn't anticipate the length and just drifted into the side of me at pace) and improve traffic flow greatly.

    • @joebaker4116
      @joebaker4116 Před 3 lety +1

      @@MK-1973 I think with waiting you can be flexible.
      Rule 243 states, "You must not stop or park at or near bus/tram/taxi stops."
      This would also infer waiting. If I decided to wait at a bus stop I would always keep an eye on what's coming behind. That way, if a bus does come along, you've seen them in good time, can move on or do a lap of the local area and return; by which time the bus is likely to have moved on.
      But of course, this is all situationally dependant and if a bus stop is the only suitable place to wait, I cannot help but ask why? Is the area surrounding the stop single (in hours) or double-yellow or is it that all other areas are occupied by parked vehicles. If it is either then ask what kind of hazard will I be posing to other road users? Would it be better to wait in a side street?

I have never encounted one of my pupils doing it on a test as of yet but if that did happen in a test, I have no doubt that would result in a serious fault right away. All went well and we carried on, later he was messing with his clipboard and it fell and hit the dash, I did another emergancy stop, the examiner asked why I had done that manouver and I replied you said at some point you would tap your clipboard on the dash, instigating the command of an emergancy stop, he laughed that it had fallen out of his grip, but commanded me for stopping.

It makes it impossible to see the other muppets flying around, either on their side when I’m creeping along to see if its safe, or on the wrong side, oblivious to anyone else who might be coming against them. And if everyone else is on one side, park on the same side; we have one obnoxious tw@t who likes to park on the opposite side, which takes out three spaces (as others have to leave space for moving vehicles to negotiate the slalom) and forces everyone else to do the slalom around his car.

    What I'd challenge at 11:18 is that really, should those drivers not instead heed some of your earlier advice in the video, and just not park opposite each other - full stop? One on the road, one elsewhere, perhaps further down. It becomes such a grey area when we talk about leaving space for wheelchair users because people are fairly clueless when it comes to spacial awareness around them. Often people will think it's fine to park on the pavement but the road is still too narrow to allow an emergency vehicle through. Again in that case, just park elsewhere? Many of the examples in this video are just as disabling for partially or non-sighted people walking with guide dogs or canes/sticks. Be good to see grass verges covered in a video like this, too - if it's not a road surface, don't park on it.

    I would like to also see a video talking about road users having little to no respect for pedestrians. A lot of drivers were I am from have no respect for them, so they do not yield for pedestrians or look out for them.
    As both a road user and a pedestrian (I do drive a car but I also do a lot of walking and use public transport), I cannot understand why people with literal death machines put the lives of pedestrians in danger. I have have been hit by cars before from behind when some guy sped out of his narrow enclosed driveway and into the main road. Another time I was forced to go onto the main road because some goons parked their huge cars on the pavement as if they were parking bays. So I had to sprint on the road to get back on the pavement before getting hit. I could not just stand there and wait for the traffic to clear because I would have been there all day. Another time a guy zoomed passed me using the pavement and what I was holding scratched his expensive doors badly. He stopped, got out of his car and got pissed and threatened to kill ME despite him driving on the PAVEMENT to avoid traffic. Now I have to not only be careful of being attacked by people while walking on the pavement, I have to worry about being hit by a car too.
    So, a video talking about why people are so oblivious would be nice. Thank you for the great videos, Ashley.
