  • Wells Cathedral is set in the medieval heart of England’s smallest city and is the earliest English cathedral to be built in the Gothic style. The current building was erected between the 12th and 15th centuries and is a significant landmark in Somerset and the South West.

I’m so glad that this cathedral survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries! The scissor arches are the most beautiful and unique solution to the problem of the weight of the tower comprising the crossing and the roof. How the master mason/architect could have come up with such an ingenious solution considering that he was dealing with primitive tools boggles the mind. I’ve never seen decorative motifs painted around the ribbed vaulting before. Is this unique to Wells Cathedral? Thank you for the wonderful video.

Thank you for your comments Monica, I'm always in awe at how they built these Cathedrals without the equipment we have today. As to the painting of the vaulting I believe it's not unique to Wells.
