  • A major incident has been declared in Somerset after heavy thunderstorms caused severe flash floods and mudslides across the county.
    Entire villages have been cut off with people ordered to leave their homes on Tuesday as water levels reached 4ft-high in the worst affected areas.
    Parents of children at two primary schools in the county were told they should not go to the school because of flooded roads, it was reported on social media

    Thank goodness they all got a Government Alarm on their mobile devices telling them floods were expected. Otherwise it could have been bad for these residents.

    This is the norm now. The climate is all over the place. All or nothing weather, insufficient action on creating appropriate infrastructure. Think of the benefit if there were systems for gathering and storing this sort of excess for future droughts.
    Last year the south of England was on fire. This year plenty of rain - but up in Scotland they have water table problems because of a lack of rain.
    There must be a solution that benefits all. This government is not interested in practical solutions, just ideology.

      These video clips are actually Devon though Somerset also had a big flood. The flooding shown was a result of approximately 70mm to 100mm . The intensity was the biggest issue. Land management was part of the issue. This was the biggest flood to hit the area in 50 years. The devastation in both these villages is horrendous.

    Farmers need assistance (financial and technological) to create a water management system .. this has been going on for decades. The eco-agenda i suspect has been discouraging preventative action

    • @DuanRussel
      @DuanRussel Před rokem +4

      i think the eco agenda would be very much in favour of water management systems as long as they are natural. Farmers need to give up (or be paid for) more of their land to introduce more regular tree lines/hedgerows to disrupt flow, as well as land for seasonal ponds/flooding.

    Flood barriers should be erected all along risky areas, in this day and age that really wouldnt be difficult or too expensive, it may hurt the local aesthetic but surely for the people living in these type of areas it would be better than a flooded home

      The whole of the UK looks like that. It's not the drainage that's the problem. It's more water vapour in the atmosphere creating heavier rain storms.

    • @bluegold21
      @bluegold21 Před rokem +2

      Nope. The west and southwest regions of the islands usually take the majority of energy from Atlantic weather fronts. So they are suited for this type of weather. It has worked so well that the southeast of England is actually considered semi-arid.
      But these events are becoming all too regular and far heavier for every locale on the islands. So when the West does get it more often than not it's now going to cause at the least severe disruption.
