  • When inventor Lonnie Johnson took a simple squirt gun and ramped it WAY up, he had no idea what a hit it would be. Since the early 1990s, the Super Soaker has soaked up more than $1 billion in toy sales. But Johnson hasn't stopped there. Correspondent Mo Rocca reports on how Johnson, a former engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, continues to make a big splash. Originally broadcast on May 21, 2017.

This is actually a great lesson for struggling inventors. If you have good ideas that are hard to monetize, find a way to turn one of them into an inexpensive toy that can potentially be worth millions. If you're successful, you can then pursue more serious projects that you're passionate about without struggling.

The Super Soaker 50 just might be the greatest toy ever invented. I still have mine. My friends and I had legendary battles with our toy water guns back in the day but it was the Super Soaker series that we all ran out to buy (or begged our parents for birthdays and Christmases) that made some serious, well organized water battles.
Thank you Mr. Johnson for these excellent childhood memories.
