  • This is a 90hp Evinrude E-TEC 2008 model with 8hrs of use, bought it with 8hrs on it. Got it tested and it was all good when I bought it. Was winterized, Had it sitting completely sealed in the shed and only just hooked it up, etec service agent said he'd have to check it properly because it wouldn't strt after he wired it up. He said he's pretty certain it defiantly needs 3 new injectors at approx $500 each (can guarantee that's what it is etc etc experience etc etc arrogance etc) and wanted $200 to check it over.
I decided to take it home and hook it up, started several times and ran pretty rough before stalling and then had to wait a while before it would start again. I noticed the fuel pump was really hot.
My cousin "auto electrician" checked it and found it was a fuel pump, $180 later and it runs perfect!!

Yep as you said we inspected the old fuel pump and it was most likely the old fuel in the pump. With the new pump I haven't had any issues, runs like a dream.

I had a 90 hp Evinrude when I was a kid back in 1964. Ran that motor on a 17-foot Thompson, skied with it, fished with it, camped with it. Changed the fuel pump diaphragm every spring, the lower unit lube every fall. Sold the boat and motor in 1984 and it was still running like new, despite who knows how many thousands of hours of use. Today's outboard motors are just too damn complicated, which is why they have so many problems.

Don't be like he said it was just the fuel pump. I fish professionally up here in canada and am not sponsored by evinrude in anyway but it is the only motor I will ever touch anymore. We bought an etec the same year our neighbor at the lake bought his merc four stroke and the dealer has already done 7 grand worth of work on his merc. Yes it was covered under warranty but a motor that's 3 years old and dealer maintained is pretty bad. There are more etecs in our tournament series then other brands combined!!

A tip. If you ever get a problem with the high pressure fuel pump it is not sold as a separate spare. Have to buy the evaporator also and it get crazy expensive. But, you can buy the fuel pump to Johnson Ficht and it is the same. Only a different electric connector. Much cheaper :)

Where did you find a fuel pump for $180??

I have this engine. Whilst parked over the winter season, the hydraulic tilt sensor triggered the tilt ram to run full up and continued to run until the batteries went flat. Cost to repair. Between $500 to $1000 for the hydraulic tilt ram, and one new battery. Warning , always disconnect your batteries if the boat or engine is going to have an extended layover.

I had a similar problem, I found my tilt switch jammed one morning, not sure how long it was running for, was a corroded tilt switch on the cowling.

it overheats because the emm the brain is water cooled along with the high pressure pump/vst and injectors. its never a good thing to suck up mud any way it will destroy your water pump poppet valve and thermostats

I have a etec 90 down in south Florida. Switching to Yamaha. I've put over 4 grand into this turd. I bought it brand new with less then 5 hours on it in 2009. Just to much work. If you're looking to buy a etec keep looking cause it's not a good motor. Runs strong and hard but has a lot of starting problems and fuel system problems... trust I've been through it all this this turd

Hi i got the same etec never had a problem with mine
Your problem sounds like your putting poor quality fuel or gas as you call it
Put high octane in it clean out vapouriser and dont forgetvto blow out the tube on fuel system that collects the shit
      Then it will be bombproof

I've had my E-Tec for over 3 years so far and not even a hiccup. I know guys that have had problems with Mercury's. I know guys that have had problems with Hondas, and I know guys that have had problems with Yamahas too. I know a guy that had a 225 high-output etec that popped. Evinrude put a new powerhead on it and hasn't had a problem since.

Just saw your video , and you can have the injectors serviced coupled up and electricity pulsed and flushed.about 60 dollers each. This is for references, how it helps

Direct injection engines isn't good as a normal injected engine

    • @deerlakediver5554
      @deerlakediver5554 Před 5 lety +1

So just what do you consider "normal injection"?
      Single-point injection?
      Throttle body injection?
      Port injection?
      Multipoint fuel injection?
      Sequential fuel injection?

@Al Yaz I haven't found that to be the case. I've got a 2017 150 that spends more time in the shop than in the water. Not very happy with it.
