  • Hoka’s Speedgoat series has long held the crown as champion of the trails, especially over mixed terrain and those long distances. So I was pretty excited to try the Speedgoat 5 on some of North Devon’s most beautiful and technical coastal trails. With every new iteration comes changes - have Hoka hit the jackpot with the Speedgoat 5? Is it still the king of the trail? Let’s find out!

Great review ! Always amazes me how the ride and energy return is on these shoes after wearing other trail shoes!

You're right - the energy return is impressive; I tend to run in Salomon trail shoes and whilst the traction, protection and weight are usually pretty good the energy return is always lacking.

Yet another quality review Lee! in my opinion you can't beat a pair of speedgoats. I love the 4s so I am sure I will be picking up a pair of the 5s at some point soon. The updates do make a lot of sense so I am sure I will love the 5s. I am going to be getting a pair of the new Icebug Arcus when they release in the next week or 2 I am hoping that shoe will perform similarly to the Hoka ATR. They are also a very sustainable and vegan shoe. I hope you get a speedy repair on the go pro mate! 🤞 Keep up the great work Lee! 😎🤘

Cheers Ben - the GoPro has cleared UK customs once I sent them a digital copy of the form I stuck 4 copies onto the outside of the package. 🤦 I haven't heard of Icebug but I have heard a lot of good things about the ATR! I think there was a shoe called the ATR Challenger that people were raving about a little while but couldn't seem to find it in my size.

@@TheVeganRunner glad to hear you're getting the camera back mate. Worth looking into the Arcus. All of the Icebug shoes are sustainable and vegan a lot of their shoes are suited to fell running but the Arcus is a highly cushioned road to trail type shoe. Should be interesting. Yeah the Hoka Challenger ATR 6 is a great shoe too really enjoyed wearing those. 😊👍

Just had these arrive in the post today Lee so good to hear your thoughts on them! I've only tried them on in the house so far but like the updates from the 4 so far

Ah that’s great - think you’ll get on with them well. They were perfect on Woolacombe Dunes this morning 👌

I wore these with grippy salomon socks and my feet didn't hit the front on steep descents 👍

      That’s a good shout - I’ll check those out, thank you 👍

I’m a long term SG user and initially I loved the sg5 and still do on short distance but have found that in anything over the 20 mile mark there’s something not quite right. I really notice how restricted my toes are and they seem to go a little numb(my feet are not wide). Never had this with any shoe before. They also feel less stable than the sg4.

That’s interesting Lewis - my experience is the opposite, but I’m coming from the SG3. Rachel has just bought the SG4 in a wide sizing, and enjoyed her first run in them yesterday - particularly the flexibility, but she won’t be going near to 20miles in them.
