- Original a track from the LP/CD The Human Menagerie [1973].
Live @ Birmingham (Live with Orchestra & Choir) is a live album by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, featuring the Orchestra of the Swan and Chamber Choir. It was recorded live at the Birmingham Symphony Hall on 24 November 2012, and was released on both CD and DVD in 2013. A DVD version of the performance was also released at the same time.
Their first single, "Sebastian", was an immediate success in Europe, although it failed to score in the UK Singles Chart. Their debut album, The Human Menagerie, was released in 1973. Although the album was not a commercial success, the band attracted a growing following in London.
For many years, Steve Harley had considered performing the first two Cockney Rebel albums - 1973's The Human Menagerie and 1974's The Psychomodo - in their entirety, with an orchestra and choir. In 2011, he began planning the one-off concert, and had originally considered the Cadogan Hall or Royal Festival Hall in London for the performance.
Cockney Rebel and Steve Harley, the soundtrack of my generation. A charismatic brilliant songwriter and a great performer. RIP Steve.
Ditto, and some…

A very sad day, losing steve ,this song will live with me for ever as one of his greatest achievements ,true Harley fans will understand where iam coming from .
Oh i do
Oh I understand I’m 69 and still love his music. Rest in peace Steve you are always in our hearts. ♥️
He’s not gone, he’s here in this song and many others. We all have to go, it’s what we leave behind that counts..
His best song in my humble opinion.
I totally agree
Another brilliant musician has left us, thanks for your brilliant music
Rest in Peace Steve Harley 😢
Steve was a Genius, R.I.P 😢
What a song, what talent, he was amazing. Sleep in peace Steve. The world is not the same without you!
A true masterpiece of the 70’s
A truly beautiful and great song, written and performed by a brilliant musician. Thank you so much, Steve. RIP.
Rip Steve....The artists who left us this great music from the 60's and 70's are dying out over time. :(((
But their music and songs will be forever.
C'est la vie mon ami.
A masterpiece in music-history. RIP Steve
I had the pleasure of meeting Steve Harley he was playing in a pub in Leeds years ago I asked him if he could sing Sebastian he did a memory I'll never forget he will live on in the memory of all who loved him.
RIP Steve, thanks for the music.
I always liked Cockny Rebel. RIP Steve. 😢 Thanks for the music.
This makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. I could listen to this all day. R I P Steve and thank you for the music.
Steve Harley F**cking brilliant
Saw the first gig they did supporting Man at Ewell Polytechnic. If I wasn't with friends, I would have left during Mans appalling performance, and probably been able to catch the bus back to Tolworth instead of walking. Rebel absolutely outclassed Man. New. Fresh. No lead guitar solos. Clockwork Orange suits and bowler hats. Fantastic. The only band I've ever seen more than four times, and each with different line ups. I've only got the best of CD now, but it's still refreshing to give it a spin now and again. Another parting of a great talent. Not many left now. 🍨
An absolute masterpiece by a wonderful and talented artist. Forever part of of the tapestry of my life 💚
Ein Lied für die Unendlichkeit ❤
I miss Steve so much. Was a fan from 1973 to the present day. Was at this amazing gig in Birmingham when the first two groundbreaking albums were played in their entirety. What a performer, what a songwriter, what a man. ❤
Ein wunderbar schönes Lied. Ich kenne es schon ewig. Es spiegelt Einsamkeit, grundtraurige, tief verwurzelte Erfahrungen wider.
Out of this world
WHAT AN EXTRAORDINARY PIECE INDEED....JUST MAGNIFICENT

I remember the day this number was played for the first time in the seventies.
Without doubt a masterpiece!!)
Yes, an underrated masterpiece.
I agree with u. Still a masterpiece!!!
I had the honor of seeing Steve live at the Burg Herzberg Festival (Germany/Hessen). At the moment he remembered the former Cockney Rebel bassist Paul Jeffreys, who, along with his wife, was one of the victims in the Lockerbie attack, the full moon rose behind the Herzberg main stage. R.I.P. Steve
Steve's best song imho
Must be a great experience to listen to that Song live with full orchestra. Very good Arrangement.
Like a fine red wine he improves with age. Bravo
Makes me cry ... so beautyful
A Closer Look generally and Sebastian particularly have lived with me since I bought the album as a callow boy aged 15. His passing is very sad but his music lives on.
You were a legend steve harley.
Remember seeing you for the very first time live at hammersmith odeon in 1975.
Made me a fan for life ,saw you live numerous times then and now when you were touring.

I too was there and saw him at Hammersmith Odeon in 1975 and fondly remember right up in front of him as we all sang along to Come up and see me ( make me smile )
That made a big impression on me hen when I was a teenager

I love this song, one of his best (Thanks for some great years Steve RIP) ☘️🇮🇪
Such as sad way to learn one of the great ones past away. I remember hearing this song the first time, many many summers ago, and never stopped loving it. The horror of growing old, all your heroes fall away too close to each other...

I love this song. He accompanied me throughout my life.
And again we have lost a really great one. Rest in peace, Steve.
R.I.P Steve Harley
Was ein "bestes" Stück !!! Mehr Worte braucht es nicht !!!
A very haunting and beautiful song, rest in heaven, Steve Harley❤❤
I bought this on a 12" single when it was first released and used to worship this song, perhaps even more than everything else he did. Perhaps not, I love everything he did, almost. However, the way he has grown into that song surpasses by a mile, even its original self. I don't think I can think off the top of my head that I would rather see any other song performed live above this.
bedankt STEVE voor de fijne muziek ik ga je optredens missen
RIP Steve Harley.
Oh my god. Only wonderful.
Rest In Poetry Steve Harley
RIP Steve💙

Best song in all of music existence.
A very sad loss. Thanks for all the music Steve.
I don't wanna believe that he is gone 💔
An amazing poet. Who would put the words Bowery Saloon into a song these days? Who even knows what that means?
Cockney Rebel put the Glam into Rock with an intellectual Parisian demand. RIP Steve 😥
