- This is the 2020 Subaru WRX STI. And its the highest spec 2020 you can buy. It has a turbo, 310 horsepower and an unrivaled AWD system in its class. It's had a few updates for 2020. James and Thomas jump behind the wheel to see if it still holds up in light of its upcoming refresh. Because at $47,000 CAD, it's got some stiff competition. Watch and enjoy. SUBSCRIBE!

Super fun filming with y'all, thanks for the donut! I was trying to think of what my favorite part was, I think meeting Tux was the highlight (Thomas' cat). Also, nailed all 3 digits of pi. 👊You guys should come to Idaho sometime!
Do a joint tour thing before I move out of Boise!
The out sourced the position of Jason, tsk tsk, I even come with a tuned WRX
Oh what part of Idaho?!?!
You even live in a boring state to!. :)
Please make an yearly compilation of all the intros!
Traded my '15 STI for a Tesla Model 3. Dumbest move of my adult life. I really enjoyed my '15 STI and drove her spiritedly for 50,000 amazing miles and with zero issues. I think I'll hold out till next year for the redesign. I sincerely hope the STI will remain true to its roots.
Edit: Didn't wait till next year. Proudly sold my Tesla for a '20 STI. Too much uncertainty with what's coming for STI.
Edit again: WOW! Am I happy I followed my heart and bought the 2020 STI. The end of STI as we know it has arrived folks... If there is a car you're on the fence of buying, don't delay. EV generation is upon us and the days of ICE vehicles are numbered. Enjoy them while you can! Life is too short to sacrifice your happiness...
Seriously? From a STI to a Tesla? What were you thinking!?
Ben Ten Dumbest fucking move man. You’d think me being in tears the entire time driving to sell my ‘15 STI would’ve been enough of a sign not to let her go! Dumbass me ignored those emotions.
Never do that again, lol... JDM for life, subiegang!!!!!!
Dang wow , I wanna do what you do for a career to afford a 20' STI
I'm in a similar boat, need to decide if I'm buying a 2020 or waiting a long year for the next one....just to potentially be dissapointed.
in the beginning, I was like wait...did I click on the wrong video? 🤣
me too
Same
Well I did click on the wrong video cause based on the thumbnail I thought I was clicking on a straightpipes video.
Indeed twas I as well
I paused the vid and checked on the title...
James: "getting in an Sti, it's not gonna feel like a racecar"
Me, in my '08 toyota yaris, with 69hp, 150k kilometres and a dead clutch: "obviously"
They test so much fast cars that they are used to it. For me sti would feel like rocket lol
Turn off your ac going up big hills. Get half your HP back
Engineering Explained cameo was great.
I expect more Tesla complaint next time though!
Yeah need more of EE and less of these msm normie review douches.
was refreshing the page thinking something was wrong with my internet lol

Wait till everyone complains about the new sti and misses the ej20's and ej25's
as long as they keep a manual anything will be a breathe of fresh air! lol
This is so true it's not even funny.
@@darrylpage3404 No one is going to miss an ej257
That's why you buy a forester GT, with an EJ20
Andrew Clark FA engines sound like a tin can civic. I drove my buddies stage 2+ so yeah I know compared to my STi
For as much shit I used to talk about the STI, after i had traded my STI in for a F80 M3, I still find myself tempted to go back to the STI. Power aside, the refined EJ motor, 6 speed, true AWD, it's simplicity, raw driving experience, driver focused feeling and it's hydraulic steering really brings back my joy and experience with the early 2000s late 90s JDM cars/ driving style; which is nearly impossible to find now in modern cars today, except with the STI.
This cars simplicity and raw driving experience are going to be missed now that everything is electronic, robing us of what true driving experience is about. We may not see it right now but give it time, all of us who complained about the STI being "old" and "needs modern updates/ tech" will eventually realize the "old" & "outdated" feeling is what true drivers will crave, not a car that does the driving for us with its 20+ ECUs. We will all realize we were wrong for hating on the current STI and resent what we complained about.
Once this old school STI is gone, it will take time for us to realize and wish there was still a driver focused sports car that retained that "old" 90s/ early 2000s JDM driving experience and style.
Hugh Vupy Damn man, now you starting to get me looking for a Subaru WRX STi too
That’s what I’ve been saying all along, people are craving for an old 2J Supra and a basic NA NSX.
People who complained never actually owned both the WRX and STi to make a comparison. I traded in my CVT WRX and drove my buddies Stage 2+ WRX and was just too boring compared to the true DNA and theatre of a beast that is the EJ STi
You type like all the STIs are going to disappear. Theres a million of them dude, you can relax.
at least you didn't trade for the upcoming f90 m3, I swear I can see that grille during sleep paralysis
sunburst LOL a million of them! Not many good ones left, the 2006+ are absolute boring to my eyes and besides all of this you in the USA only have EJ25s. I have a EJ20 2003 STI and it’s starting to become quite rare if you want a stock one with low miles just like mine , their price will rise real quick I’d say specially now that subaru announced the Ej20 final edition
The fact that it has hydraulic steering and a manual makes me want it even more
I know some people will bash on this car but the WRX STI has this sort of charm that stands out from its competition
It’s a good all round car that is good on track and the dirt
Dont forget the wintertime🙂 its a monster
Dont forget the RAW feeling when you drive. That today with all the computer in car it doesnt exist anymore.
What’s there to bash? Legit question
@@dfjdskf9234j4fisd just the car being on an old architecture and some people will say it's an outdated car
"And shifting is fun!"

@@JohnDoe-wi7eb no, i want snow.
What snow tires do you use?
This is good to know since I live in Chicago and I’m thinking of getting an sti
That intro is just gold!
Love to see Jason Fenske on this channel!
Recently ran across a used 2021 sti with only 3k miles. I immediately jumped on it since Ive wanted one for a while. Love driving it as my daily.
This is one of the best review videos I've seen. Clean, simple, and to the point.
This is so classic, watching Throttle House and Engineering Explained collaboration just made me so giddy inside... like a little kid watching a favorite cartoon on Saturday morning so many years ago. Well done guys!
When manual transmissions are a dying breed there's a special place in my heart for the wrx/sti, just cannot bring myself to dump all that money into such an old design. I'm holding out hope that 2021 refresh will be the one for me.
I just bought a 2020, no regrets
It will have a manual for sure only
Not worth the pricetag
No ragerts
Jonathan Pontel $35 grand is not bad
At this point I’m so done typing comments about how good your intros are because I know I will run out of creative praises to say before you guys run out of creative intro ideas. You win.
That tho definitely is the kinda classroom, classmates and professor I wish I had in college
I think it’s so interesting how personal preference plays such a big role on someone’s opinion over a car. While some say this car isn’t as engaging and fun as the type r or focus rs, many reviewers in England for example said the sti is such a characterful and analog experience and it’s amazing on back roads..... that’s why it’s important to really test drive a car before you choose one, that’s the best way to see what you like
Great video though guys! Like always!
That was a quality intro. I love when these interesting youtubers get together and collaborate. It definitely makes for good entertainment.
THIS is your best intro yet. I have thought it on some others, but this takes the cake!
Omfg at the beginning I thought my CZcams app glitch and was for reason playing a engineer explained video but showing ur channel
BEST INTRO YET. Love Engineering Explained.
This video is so enjoyable that I keep coming back to it over and over again
Loved the intro
Loved the STI review
Adored the outro.
You guys are kick Grass!
just wanna say that I only stumbled upon this channel two days ago and it is now one of my favorite car review channels on youtube.
Also, I always wanted an STI but its pricing never really drops in my country 😢
Haha welcome . These guys are the best! Glad you found the community
Now go binge the rest of the vids from them. They are hilarious.
They dont go down in prices on any country
That's in every country buddy. Subies hold their value way to fuckin much
Welcome! Come for the intro, stay for the car review. 😉
This has been my fave channel for a few months now. Keep it up guys!
Loving the collabs these days fellas. Keep up the great work.
I love the banter they have when they're in the car together!
You guys are killing these intros! Well done! I have a 2012 STI hatch - which has been a great car, especially in the winter. I knew when I bought it new back then that the engine was old. It's 7 years later and not much has changed there. Subaru needs to seriously up the power. 80 more hp would be good for a start. Better fuel economy would be nice too.
Mr. Fenske's special appearance was awesome. Good video again, Throttle House!
Is it just me or the video quality has improved dramatically? Esp the shots from inside the car. The scenery outside almost feels surreal! As always, great vid guys!
I bought the '19 in March and adore it. Your review is spot on! it is a modern take on what made me love driving in the 90's and is a jack of all trades. but...It does have a lot of road noise that needs to be droned out with an aftermarket exhaust so you enjoy the deafening roar. Well done gents!
How's the car doing now? I got my '19 right at the end of 2020 with 9400 mi on the clock. I'm at 38k now, and it's still doing great. Upgraded the brake pads, put Motul gear oil in the trans and diffs, tires, and oil changes every 3-4k. And the necessary muffler delete :)
Funny how true this title ended up being. RIP STI!
Love my 2020 STI. Here in Canada I was driving up quite a steep hill on a snowy day, no one was able to go up the hill but me. I still can't beleive how amazing the traction is. Always loved subies, i still cant beleive i finally bought one 😁
This is an amazing car for the winter. I bought one 4 years ago. It puts a smile on my face every time. Simply awesome. It does what you ask of it. Control with confidence.
I bought the 2015 when it first came out. Track days, snow days, long road trips, and 80k trouble free miles. Family car. Track Car. Commuter car. U name it, this car does it. It’s a do all car. My son took it to college and he’s enjoying it as his daily driver. I love it !
Just got my 2020 STi, loving it since I've wanted one forever.
How much did u get it for? With and without tax? Thanks !
@@Haylem $40000 in Alaska, no taxes here.
@@fedkat8821 yikes... I found one for 37000 base, and another one for 36.5 right with packages. Hoping tax isn't too much
ive gotta say since the beginning with the e46 and videos about swapping the diff - been a fan - videos are PRO level now! and entertaining ! awesome job!!
You guys always have the best intros! Love this channel
I have owned 2 of these in the past and it’s the best car I’ve ever owned… definitely looking into one now a days
"I just drew an EJ engine".... the OMG that intro, LMAO
Best car reviews period!!! You guys are so much fun.
Yes what a cast! Absolutely jumped out of my seat when i saw all 3 of yall on the video.
So three years later and yes you should have purchased the 2020 STI 🫡
Holly crap, Engineering Explained and Throttle House collaborate! Two of best channels working together, NOICE!
Do more work together guys!
PS: Blake Caliper, hahaha!
This aged well =)
i love you guys, no bias, these are the reviews we need
Some really good filming and editing guys! Great job
Finally! As a 2019 STI owner I was hoping you were getting a 2019 but this was worth the wait! Great opening joke about the EJ! Had me laughing!
what do you think of the engine? as it dates back to 2004
@@Justin87878 Being it uses port injection, the gas milage is horrible. Other than that I have no issue with the engine. I wanted to buy one before they are gone forever. I'm leaving it unmodified so I shouldn't have any problems.
@@Justin87878 engines out of the type ra 2018, zlightly bigger heads, but otherwise, "the same" though there are definitely differences. Lot of people say it stayed the same but if you take one out from am 04 and compare it to a '19 = good bit of differences.
@@CarStory Thanks for the info. So I know I would avoid the STI ever... my friend ended up getting a CPO WRX and he was satisfied with it so far. Will see what the next generation looks like.

Ok you guys have solidly positioned yourselves as the intro kings by now! That was great! 😆
Cherry blossoms had significance to Samurai warriors in Bushido. Sakura continues to hold special importance to the Japanese.
But to ignorant Canadians and Americans it's funny.
Ya hard to take any reviews serious when they shit on the car's background, history, and/or culture. (These guys aren't the first to be completely ignorant in that matter towards Subaru)

I can't believe I just came across this one since I've been a Throttle House & an Engineering Explained fan for awhile. Two thumbs up... 👍👍
I have to admit the EJ20 is a great engine especially for the WRX STI

i come for the intro's and stay for the reviews. Bravo lol
Just picked up a 2019 STI back in July (ordered it in late April), and I love it. Been wanting one ever since they debuted in North America, and finally went ahead and grabbed one this year.
Was debating waiting for the refresh, but since just about everything about is is a big unknown at this point, I went ahead and picked up the current generation. Would feel uncomfortable buying the first few years of a STI with a new engine, and on a new platform, anyway. Better to wait a few years to see what kind of problems pop up, and hopefully give Subaru time to address any issues.
And now you're even happier you did, what with Subaru canceling it. I love my '19 as well. It's nice to own a piece of history like this car.
"End of the Line, Pal" Oh if they only knew at the time
Bro these intros always make me smile
Bought my '19 STi and I love almost everything about it.
You had me at, “this is the last iteration...”
Cherry Blossoms represent change in Japanese culture. So when they made a newer version of WRX back in the day, they put some cherry colouring on it. 8:59
You guys have the best intros!
I love my 2017 WRX STI Limited. Best car buy of my life! Excited for 2021!
Last of the EJ's will be a collectors item ..
Yeah for people who collect engines with spun bearings and cracked ringlands
I love my 15 STI, but.... it needs revamped hardcore!! The Tomei TI exhaust is a must for any STI owner, I have it on mine and fuuuuuuck. Perfect sound.
I've got an invidia exhaust and it sounds amazing. I've gotten compliments on it from people with the tomei ti
Best intro. Winner of it all.
You guys make the best car videos!
Knock knock
Who's there?
EJ Engine 🤷♂️
Lol. This comment is giving me flashbacks and cold sweat because one of my rod bearings went on my STi
Yup, one of my bearings just went out, no fun
Suhhduhh - Damn dude, I’m sorry to hear that. Did you have any mods, were you driving aggressively when it happened, and how was your oil level at the time? What’s your next move?
Mine happened two years ago. Was stage 2, and hit 140 on the highway, then got off and next thing I know, the devil was knocking at my door 🤦🏽♂️. Dealer covered me under warranty, thankfully. I’ve heard of guys just driving normally down the road, stock, just to have a rod bearing go on them. Dealer took a month to get to my car so had to rent one all that time before they could give me a loaner, then they scuffed the whole face of one of my door handles smh. Terrible experience
Interlution Matthew is right, EJ20 don’t knock... You guys never had it, such a great engine ! Have a 2003 Blobeye STI Type UK PPP 🤙🏼
I have 2016 stock sti with 65,000 miles , i use 98 octane and motul engine oil, car runs smoothly and no issues, if you gonna use low octane fule and cheap oil then you will hear the knock knock sound
I bought a new 2019 STI two weeks ago.. I am gonna keep it forever
moe malik no you wont
It will either be totaled or sold in 4 years. Whatever comes first.
Same. Traded in a 15 WRX. Super stoked and night and day difference.
moe malik your STI won’t last 100k miles
A K yes bro, we’re jealous of the car with the 30 year old engine
Very enjoyable review guys!!
I almost thought I miss clicked the video.. Read the name again, and I'm like why is Engineering Explained ... OOOOOOOOOHHH THIS IS 🔥
Some cars in that price range you mentioned like the Merc are just a whole different audience though. The driving experience is very numb in those cars, the WRX has always been a more raw experience. And even though these new ones are far more refined than what they used to be, they seem almost deliberately less so than their competition. And that's OK.
For a second, I thought I clicked on the wrong video.
That was actually great acting at the beginning by EE. I had to watch it a few times. Very funny!
I love how CZcamsrs got together and make something like beginning of the video
As the owner of an 09 STI hatch I can't imagine buying a 2020 sedan. I mean WHY? For an extra 5 horsepower and green brake calipers? Good God man, we've been waiting forever for a new gen STI. Its at least 5 years overdue!
