In my country (a european one) that has started to fade over the last decade, but in the US it probably declined even sooner. Up to the late 2000s it was very common to see news stations talking about alleged correlation between playing shooters and being a sociopath or potential school shooter. Also pointing out radical minorities that happen to play videogames was very common to push the theory that it is a nieche hobby for losers, outcasts and racists. Nowadays it's easy too laugh about, so sarcastically calling someone a based gamer can be like jokingly calling someone a racist when it's obviously not the case.
