  • Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more!
    IMPORTANT: Since the filming of this video, candy paint has become available in spray can format.
    This video shows a new technique that I came up with for painting a form of ghost flame with spray cans. Obviously you can achieve superior results using proper spray equipment, but this is still a fun an interesting technique to try out.
    Hopefully this technique will open up some possibilities for ghosting effects for anyone who is restricted to doing their spraying with cans.
    The paints that I use in this video are made by Rustoleum. Other brands such as Krylon, Tremclad, Molotow, or others can be used as long as you can find a translucent colour that meets your needs.
    Candy paints, which are completely transparent, are now available. House of Kolor carries a high quality version. They refer to them as Kandy.
    You will be able to achieve superior results as demonstrated on the reverse of the panel if you become proficient with an airbrush and paint gun. The back of the panel was painted using AutoAir and PPG paints, as well as a Devilbiss paint gun and Iwata airbrush.
    The process for achieving this kind of effect with spray cans involved creating a high contrast image using a dark background and light foreground, or the opposite. Next you paint over it with a semi-transparent colour such as the rustoleum metallic paint that I used in this video. I chose the racing green colour, and used it as the background as well. You can also just do your image in black and white and then go over it with your top colour.

    Thank you for your feedback. The company that I work for purchases this dibond in four foot by eight foot sheets. We use it to make signs and other things. I cut sections off of those when I need them for painting. The same applies to aluminum and steel.

    Rustoleum's colorshift paint is designed to go over a black base. It would create an interesting effect in this situation, but if you mean to use it instead of the green it won't be much of a ghosted effect. It doesn't really show up over white.

I sometimes don't wear one when filming portions of my videos when I'm trying to explain things while spraying, but I always encourage others to use protection. I used to assume that people already knew that, but I've started harping on it more lately.

      @BradAngove  Před 10 lety

      Nice airbrush choice. I use dibond (sign material) typically. Sometimes I use pieces of steel or aluminum too. The dibond is sold as airbrushing panels at some places. That's funny about the christmas boxes.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  Před 8 lety

      I really don't think you would be able to get a passable true-fire using this technique. It would require many very expensive paint cans, and you would have difficulty getting the appropriate detail for that sort of effect.
      I use a flexible cardboard sheet to direct my paint. Poster board tends to work quite well.

    For the one with the gems shift color
    You have a black surface then layers metallic?
    Then a transparent gem shift? And then metallic again?
    Or do I miss something?

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  Před 9 lety

      If you're looking to do a ghosted gem shift design you would leave out the metallic after. Start with the black, put on your metallic, then use a gem shift colour as close to that as possible to create your design.

      maybe you can do a video and try it out. see if it would turn out how ive got Pictured in my head.

      @BradAngove  Před 7 lety

      I don't really have the resources to do that at the moment, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work exactly how you described it. Just be careful to note the difference between a paint that glows in the dark, and a paint that becomes luminescent because of heat.

    • @crystal5322
      @crystal5322 Před 7 lety

      is there a big difference in the two. ?i dont really know to much about different paint i figured it was all kind of the same .kinda like glow in the dark toys. you can warm them up in your hands and they glow.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  Před 7 lety

      That must be a different kind than I'm accustomed to. My glow in the dark stuff kind of absorbs light and then emits it. It's not based on heat unless I'm mistaken.

    @Brad Angove do you have a video that explains how you're painting the flames? You go into super speed mode without explaining what you do with that cardboard.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  Před 7 lety +1

      I don't have a video explaining how to paint the pattern. I simply use the cardboard to block paint from hitting certain areas, thus creating those curves. If you want a thin line, you can get it by spraying at an angle against the cardboard, and letting the paint deflect down onto the surface.

    I now have the balls to try the tailgate on my expensive truck. Cool video bud,thanks for sharing

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  Před 9 lety

      Honestly, it will be difficult to get a good finish on something that large using spray cans. It can be done, but for something as expensive as a truck it is probably worth looking into some proper spray equipment. Either way, I'm glad you found the video helpful and I hope the tailgate project goes well for you.

      Well my father in law owns a body shop. So if I mess it up I will stripper it down to metal and pay him to make it but again. Lol

    Cool, as a beginner I would like to do the same type effect ghost smoke as you did, like the other side of the board that you did with a air brush. Where I live it is a small town and very Limited on any type of art equipment and it would take me 2 hour rid to the nears city, so I know wouldn't be able to find the the paint you have mentioned where i live .so if I go to a hardware store and try to find something as close to the receipt, what will it be by your professional view, or what would MacGyver use beside chilling gum and duct tape.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  Před 10 lety

      The stuff that I use is available online if you're interested. I've never found paint at a hardware store that I would put through my airbrush, but maybe you could put some enamel through a small paint gun if you thin it a little with paint thinner or mineral spirits. I believe MacGyver would use a car battery, some paper clips, and a penny or two.

    Interesting!! I'm having a friend of mine airbrush flames on my bike. To safe money he's letting me do all the prep work on the tank. Do you suggest sandblasting or aircraft stripper. We tried to use the base under the old paint but it's splitting everywhere now that the art and clear is all done. Using cobalt blue but seeing light blue dots appearing as well. Advice for me ???

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  Před 9 lety

      Andrew Blackwell Normally I would just sand back the gloss and paint over the old job. If you've got to take the paint off because there are problems with it I would go with sandblasting (only if the tank is metal of course). If the parts are plastic you can't really use sandblasting or aircraft stripper. Both would ruin it.
      If the tank is metal, you can sandblast it and then prime it and have your friend airbrush it from there.

    hello I know you do a lot of spray paint videos and I will be using one of your ideas the chameleon paint job on my Jackson rebuilt but do you have any videos on rewiring I'm putting in new pickups and replacing all the wiring with wire harness and I was wondering if you had videos on that thank you I'm also going to be installing a Floyd Rose where there was not one so some of this is going to be real new to me and videos always help me out so much

      My most recent video actually includes me replacing my wiring, but I didn’t put out much info on that aspect I suppose. I’ll go more in depth on the next one.
