The New Precision Guitar Kit Hardware Test Fit
It is a good idea to get in the habit of doing a test fit for your hardware when you start a new guitar kit. This matters more for some aspects of the hardware than others, but regardless it's a good practice. It is even more important if you are doing a thick automotive style finish, which is what we have going on this guitar.

    Hi Brad, I realize this video was done quite some time ago now, but I was wondering if you had previously raised the grain on this alder body before sanding with 320? I have a similar alder body that I plan to stain with a water-based stain and wasn't sure if I needed to do this before applying the stain. Thanks for all the great content!

    My brother and I used boiled linseed oil in his music store in the EARLY '70s. We applied it to guitar fingerboards. I probably rubbed it in as much with my fingers as using a paper towel. It worked great. Never had a single problem with it and am seriously considering going back to linseed because I have not found a fingerboard oil yet that twangs my strings. They all brag ... but no body darkens or strengthens rosewood or ebony like linseed. And boy ... is it cheaper.

    Hi Brad, loving the content. Can I use this oil-based Minwax wipe-on method over solvent based car paint or is it only suitable for wood finishes? I want to avoid the hazards of 2k spray if possible. How long should I wait for the base colour to harden? I’ve read potentially 3-4 weeks to allow it to fully harden.

  • @Tonetwisters
    @Tonetwisters Před dnem

    My brother and I used boiled linseed oil on guitar boards in his Tallahassee music store, back in the EARLY '70s. Worked quite well and we never had any problems with it. I generally just use Four ZERO steel wood to clean frets and board at the same time (masking tape over the pickups). Wipe it off well. Apply oil.

    Rustoleum back-of-can instructions suggest a couple of medium coats from 12" away. That will result in NO discernible hammer effect - just a matte silver look. They ought to have said a heavy coat from 8" away - but so many people would have trouble applying that with no runs that the manufacturer has probably figured, supplying instructions for the wrong finish effect was the lesser evil. I've a feeling this is one type finish that is actually better rolled on from a can, because a sprayable formulation will necessarily have to be thinner which doesn't lend itself to this effect.

    So, I got a butterscotch blond squire Tele. I am going to paint it like a Page Dragoncaster. That is the plan anyway. I sanded off the body after fully dissembling. I still like the Butterscoth so I just sanded the gloss off it. Next, I was going to stencil the image and paint it on, and then seal it. So, I have Deco art Americana Acrylic paint for the dragon. My question is if I wanted to seal it with wax free shellac would it seal that paint? Is the acrylic ok to use. First repaint ever. quite an endeavor. But i got a image in my head. it won't be exactly like the page one but that is ok. I want it to be mine. Thanks.

      That should work. The shellac might wrinkly the acrylic a bit though, so test them on something else first.

    What would be the steps if the neck I’m trying to finish is an open grain wood?

      It depends on what you want for your finish. You may want to grain fill first before you start oiling/finishing.

    Did you end up leaving the texture on this guitar? I did a black crackle with sort of a neon green underneath with a can of 2k clear and I kinda like the alligator skin look. Been debating on leaving it

      I did end up leaving it. I like it that way.

    Looks amazing, Ima try this for my custom guitar build. One question, do you let the gold dry before you wipe off the soap?

      Yes, I try to use a paint that dries to the touch quickly so I don’t have to leave the soap on too long.
