There's a cost to keeping your body running. For every five breaths you take, one is paying for your brain, one is paying for your liver, and another is paying for your muscles.
On average, your body spends about 1,400 calories per day just keeping you alive, even if you're doing nothing else. This helps explain why we tend to avoid unnecessary physical activity.
For our ancestors, finding food could be incredibly difficult, so they didn't waste energy. Today, even though have energy sources ready at our fingertips, we still naturally protect how we spend that energy.

I think too many modern humans are also energy savers. I would also say that if you want to see what our ancestors physiques looked like, look to those humans who are around today and live in more primitive cultures. They aren’t Jacked. They don’t look like Greek Gods. But they are generally lean and quite fit and strong.

The range you see differs, the Hadza are generally fit and lean, with the occasional jacked dude.
They are also a prime example for our ancestors.
Adding to this, the presenter forgets that there were a lot more animals around, small to large. There literally was protein around the corner in many places of the world.

Nah. 100% depends on the exact culture. Sure, they ain't fat, but "fit, strong and lean" are in no way dictated by living hand to mouth. Almost ALL, in the past, were terribly malnourished compared to modern man. The opposite of fat is not fit, it is death by starvation.

Regarding optimal dose of exercise, if someone is sedentary a small amount of exercise is hugely beneficial. In fact, a small to moderate amount is BETTER than diving in with some epic effort. The returns to exercise volume and intensity diminish and ultimately become negative. If you aren’t fit, you are going to benefit massively from just a little exercise - big return and small investment. Then you can do more later. The Marathon may present itself as a natural next step eventually, but no need to worry about it unless you find it a motivating North Star.

Nothing motivates me like music, with or without a positive message in the lyrics. I like especially Latin music e.g. samba and mambo. You may find it takes more effort to remain still, than to move in rhythm. You can expend any amount of energy you want. The music also occupies your brain in a pleasant way, allowing you to either forget, or focus on other things -- which is completely obvious, and why we listen to it in the first place. The way our brains process sound is so fantastic. It's just vibrating air, after all, yet we get so much out of it.

Totally agree- if you really don’t do ANY exercise then sure a little is better than nothing. But come on, the average person really should be doing AT LEAST 2-3 exercise sessions per week. Doesn’t have to be as intense as CrossFit or long distance running- just playing your favourite sport to get your heart rate up is enough!

3:05 - When you understand that human beings use their own saturated fat stores during lean times, you will begin to see how important fat is in gaining enough calories through a minimum of "food". After that, any movement is important for the brain and the circulation of fluids. I simple walk will more than take care of your "exercise".
And why do we need to "exercise"?
That is a question only the individual can answer; however, I have seen enough of life to understand that we "exerciese" in order to:
    1. Lose weight - won't work long term because our bodies are not designed to peel off calories during a hunt.
    2. Guilt - This is the emotional issues that the individual might face related to food.
    3. To eat more of our desired foods - see number one above; this will fail eventually because your body is much smarter than your conscious self. It will reserve/conserve/adapt to stay in "balance".
    4. To feel great - YES! My original answer above suggests that movement, no matter how slight, is good for the brain and fluid distribution. Just walk. We humans were designed to literally "walk down our prey to death". No animal on earth can outwalk us. Look it up!
We are awesome animals who need a good supply of fat to keep our metabolisms rolling along. You may waste your jaw muscles "chewing the cud"; however, fat just slides down the gullet, and get put into circulation very quickly. It is an excellent source of energy and Vits. DEKA.
    Be well!

One way to tell whether our ancient ancestors were heavily muscled or not is to look at the bones. Heavy work that builds muscle makes bones grow and more dense. In the days of hunter/gatherers my guess is there was alot of leg development from being on the move and a more moderate upper body from fighting, hunting, climbing and building. Lean but not muscle monsters that we see in gyms today. Those bodies are useless for anything other than what they do in the gym and for looks.

    • @Maximus-kx3kg

@@Maximus-kx3kg I was saying that alot of the muscle guys build in the gym is useless, unless you're lifting for a sport, or to stay strong for whatever reason. I used to be one of those guys. Got huge in my younger days for wrestling, football and shotput in highschool. I used to spar with a friend who turned pro boxer and I kept my exercise routine going for years after highschool. But as time passed, my life changed. Had to care for a sick parent, worked crazy hours and got pretty burned out. Later went back to exercise, but the days of lifting huge amounts of weight were over for me. Old now, but I still try to stay fit. And I've realized that the work I put in the gym was really a waste of time. Still pretty strong for an old guy, but I can't lift up cars anymore.
One thing lifting heavy did to me was cause alot of arthritis and pushed my blood pressure up. Still have arthritis, but the blood pressure is good. Being too fat or too muscled up makes the heart work harder to push blood through all that extra tissue. In fact my left ventricle was thicker than it should have been. That's called athlete's heart. Not good.
Anyway, people can do what they choose, but all that extra muscle people put on today can be very damaging, if taken to extremes. The most important muscle in the body is the heart. Work to keep that strong and healthy. Everything else will take care of itself.
      Cheers. Happy Holidays.🙏

Thank you Dr. Lieberman. This is prudent advice. I especially like the part of not looking to athletes as a standard by which to measure the adequacy of your activity level. Far too often the lay public looks to athletes, and are so amazed by an athlete's physical performance, that the public assumes they must be the picture of health. With that misguided assumption about athletes, they try adhere to an athletes dietary and exercise protocols. Many times, athletes are actually not healthy, despite their impressive appearance, and such extreme levels of performance work to the detriment of longevity and long-term quality of life. When studying longevity and quality of life at a population level, the longest lived populations are not known to produce Adonis looking specimens that can approach world record numbers on sprints and lifts. They are all, however, at least moderately active, have sensible diets devoid of junk food, live in tight nit communities, sleep well, have low levels of stress, and get plenty of time outdoors.

Because we have massive portion sizes compared to them, we also eat lots of processed foods with a poor nutritional value to the amount of calories they give, which also means you will feel hungry faster because of nutrient deficiency. And nevermind the sweets and junk food we eat.
If you kinda just lived normally, doing chores, work, do some activity outside you find fun, you can be very healthy, but it means actually eating healthy and focusing on low calorie nutrient rich foods, and just eating less. Focusing on water too. Upshot is if the food is rich, you will feel hungry less.
Only like a fifth of your calorie expenses is exercise typically. Maybe up to a fourth with particularly rigorous exercise.
This should tell you something. If you want to lose weight or improve health, the gym is helpful absolutely, but it’s not the smoking gun. Changing your diet is significantly more important. Several times more.

Just go out there and move around a little; make yourself a little tired. Walk immediately after dinner. Swim in the morning if you're lucky enough to have the opportunity, or just have a good all-over stretch when you rise for the day. Can't climb up stairs? Okay, but you can go down them maybe. You'll be amazed what a little movement does for your sleep. (Nope I'm not an expert, I just do all those things and they help me a lot; hope they do for you too.)

Interesting breakdown. Any exercise 'burns' only roughly one third more calories than if you were sitting down. Exercise also leads to increased appetite and more food consumption. Moderate exercise for fitness benefits, healthy continuous healthy eating plan (not short-term diet) for health.
Also hard-core fitness generally leads to poor health outcomes eventually. E.g. professional cyclists with later on heart problems, professional tennis players with buggered joints later in life.

The most important thing is being healthy; whatever it takes to have a healthy body, should be done without fail is the be-all and end-all. There are many fat people living for longer years, while the skinny ones die in earlier years because of not living a healthy lifestyle. Obesity is itself not an issue at large but the way someone spends their lives in the long run, though having a heavy body is not ideal. Energy exerted must reflect energy taking in so as to exert it. Thus "diet" is critical. To think of prehistoric people as muscle bound idiots is superficial logic. A body builder is able to achieve their bulk because they maintain a diet conducive to doing so. Absent that dietary intake then working out would become counterproductive as their exertions would lead to their burning muscle.
So these primitive people were as strong as their diets allowed and as smart coincidentally as the same facilitated. By harnessing fire man was able to achieve higher caloric assimilation since cooking food allows for easier digestion and absorption. Their varied diets helped them to maintain muscle mass - yet the inconsistency of a hunter-gatherer lifestyle would also mean they lacked a regular intake of that diet. That would limit their ability to develop and maintain muscle mass. A few "alphas" who monopolized available food might have been strong = but most of the ground would be less so.

Love videos like this. They always omit crucial info like the fact that nonhuman bipeds had massively more dense and thick bones indicating that they had much more muscle mass. They were jacked. Like gorillas and chimps. Their feet indicate that as well. No arch is consistent with such body weight.

    • @micaelat3734
      @micaelat3734 Před rokem

Babies don't have an arch. The arch is developed through walking and provides the springiness of our step.

    • @gabademics9184
      @gabademics9184 Před rokem

@@micaelat3734 why did you bring up babies other than to deflect from my point? Non human bipeds were biomechanically different. Their toes were generally the same length, forefoot shortened and widened, and ankle shifted 12%forward, and no significant arch! In any foot or prints we have on record. They didn't have a springyness to their walk. They were not built for it. We interbred with neanderthals and other flat footed bipeds. The people today who have flat feet almost all have problems walking. It's an example of a derived trait from hybridization that is detrimental.

He's not wrong but his answer is incomplete. The human body has adapts to the needs of person. This is why bodybuilders will eat 20 meals a day to allow the body to not need any fat stores. Africans ancestors would have been built like marathon runners to be able to maintain chase or a prey but even for their size they would of been muscular. Being jacked is also relative no one today would argue that a knight, a viking, greek phalanx or a comache were not fit. These cultural used a variety of training and did not have optimized diets. They may have not been ripped to the bone like athletes today but this modern look is very unnatural and usually involves synthetic drugs.
