Absolutely true, and please don't let schools say they teach personal finance. THEY DO NOT. We need classes that talk about budgeting, what debt REALLY means, how taxes are calculated and how tax brackets work. Things that make teenagers more prepared for adulthood.

I didn’t learn anything about personal finance until I actively sought out to take a class in college. It’s ridiculous. I vividly remember my high school counselor looking down on me because I chose to go to a junior college (for 2 years before transferring) as opposed to choosing to drown in debt by attending a university right away.

My son is 17 and has finished all AP math at his HS yet he lacks basic financial knowledge. I wanted him to take a personal financial class his senior year. No surprise, but there is not one offered nor at the community college. It would be fantastic if you could put together a course! I am in my 40's and learned this all too late. I don't want this to happen to my kids. They are being set up to fail. Thank you for taking the time to invest in today's youth. They are our future. We need to set them up to succeed in this world. In my middle school, every other Friday we had a group of professional men and women, who came in split us up into boys and girls, and teach us about professions, how to be responsible men and women in society, how to manage finances, positive role models that majority of kids need. They cut the program next year due to budget cuts but yet everybody on the board got a big raise. These people do not care about our education and our doing better, they want stool pigeons to follow and listen.

About to start a personal finance unit for my 12th grade Econ students next week. I'm no "expert," but I feel like I know enough to give my students a solid start. But I agree, they are hungry for it, and we don't teach enough. Arizona legislature is currently trying to push a new bill to require a full semester of personal finance, instead of just one unit of an Economics class. I am here for it.

This video is so true for probably 60% of the population now yes if you’re going to be a doctor or a lawyer, a pharmacist something that truly does require lots of education you may need all of high school, but take me all I ever did was work in manufacturing I did not learn one thing in high school that actually helped me out with any job I ever had. I would’ve gotten more use out of going ahead and starting work rather in a fast food or whatever at 14 or 15 and just completely skipped high school where I could’ve maybe learn more about what I was interested in, but for me, high school was nothing but a waste of time but yet everyone was so proud because I graduated high school and none of that education did a darn thing for me

In the state of maryland you are required to complete at least 1 semester of a financial course in high school.
I was teaching part time and they asked me to proctor the class (press play on the video and grade assignments based on the curriculum rubrics). It was Dave Ramsey's financial peace university for high schoolers. It changed my life. Vinnie is correct: school is meant to keep you stupid.

I took accounting in high school. It gave me the basics of balancing a check book and practice in the stock market. I've never balanced a check book in real life. Furthermore, a simulation is drastically different than in real life, but it taught be basic stuff about money and it is used that further enticed my hungry to learn more in the future. And that is why it is important. As an adult I now know my limit. Some people go way too far before they understand something needs to change.

Parents must first have good money habits so they can be an example for their kids. Talking about money, budgets at home with your kids, teaching the value of hard work (Work Ethic) and saving (Living beneath your means). Dave Ramsey probably has the best overall lessons for the AVERAGE person on debt and general money habits. Just simple "Get out of debt" "Stay out of debt" lessons. The public school system is forever broken, you can learn anything on the internet now, you do not need a class in school.

In my opinion, another huge problem in America we taken an 18-year-old graduating high school with no real life experience and tell them to pick a job that they’re going to have to do the rest of their life pick a career we call it with no life experience is a 18 year old to truly know what they want to do with their life so in my opinion, what we should be doing starting around 1415 instead of kids doing nothing all summer. How about the job shadow people to truly halfway learn what that job takes what you have to do to make it in that job what type of education you truly need, maybe when they do turn 18 at least a little better decision on what they may actually want to do that way when they do go to college or try to get a skill set they’re not going in completely blind and they at least have somewhat of an idea of what they’re going intothey’re not going into that for decades, trying to pay back the student loans in a job that they hate in my opinion. This happens to way too many people in general.
