    My apologies if the music volume is loud. A company called HEXACORP LTD must have bought the copyright to a free song I was using through the video editor app. They in turn are now trying to steal all monetization from any video that had the song in it. I was forced to dub over another song through CZcams, and am not able to control the volume.

    almost everyone, local or from away, who lives and works in Canada's far north gets a northern living allowance on top of a pretty healthy wage. So rather than government subsidize the freight costs on the goods and supplies they are shelved at a "true" cost. However that living allowance makes up the difference (mostly). While cost of living is an issue its not as bad as a superficial look at the shelf prices would have you think.
    Plus the current system keeps lots of cash moving within the community.
    My wife and I did this very trip this past June...in a 14 year old Nissan X Trail pulling a teardrop trailer...you could do it in a Toyota Corolla if you were prepared to throw the Toyota away after...so go, you don't need a ton of vehicle and gear.

    • @simpleoverlander
      @simpleoverlander  Před 5 lety

      Metaxa Anabeer Thanks for the info. I wasn’t aware of much of that.
      Cool that you were able to experience it as well. And you are right about not needing much gear to do that drive. A spare tire will probably get you there and back depending on how one drives. I saw a lot of locals just in cars, and even helped some when they had 2 flats at once and only one spare.

    • @metaxaanabeer
      @metaxaanabeer Před 5 lety +1

      @@simpleoverlander Oh yes, a spare (or two), tubeless tire repair kit, some Slime and a good 12V compressor are mandatory. Helps to have a star wrench and a good bottle jack as well...the vehicle supplied stuff does the job but proper equipment is so much better. Plus do not ever drive past a fuel stop no matter how little you need.

    • @ywgmb35
      @ywgmb35 Před 2 lety

      @@metaxaanabeer Also, due to the exorbitant cost of groceries up there, people in those communities try to get as much food from the land as they can. The natives and Inuvialuit are able to hunt and fish as much as they want year-round, which is fair, but I believe even the non-Indigenous residents are allowed to catch a few fish per day. I would definitely do so if I lived there, and I would only buy condiments and side dish ingredients (veggies, etc.) to go along with the fish.

    I went up to Tuk in 2018 and again in 2019. In 2018 there was a bad soft spot about 10 miles out of Inuvik. This past summer there was a soft spot near Tuk, but it was not nearly as bad as the 2018 soft outside of Inuvik. The soft spot outside of Inuvik was solid this summer.

    • @simpleoverlander
      @simpleoverlander  Před 4 lety

      Gone Retired When I went the sides of the road were all soft so driving down the middle was the best option. Getting over for oncoming traffic or passing traffic was a bit of a challenge. The worst part of the road for me was between the MacKenzie River and Inuvik

      Dean S No toe dipping, just my hand. That was enough for me. The prices were crazy for visitors. I’m sure the locals make do, but needless to say, I didn’t make any purchases. Every vehicle was just caked in mud. There is no point to ever clean them I don’t think. Never saw anything like it.
      Even when I was hundreds of miles away from the Dempster, people would see me and say “You were on the Dempster, weren’t you?’”

      The most typical suggestion is June to late August to avoid wet and nasty weather on the Dempster. I did this in the 3rd week of August and it was really nasty for 3-4 days with a lot of rain, sleet, and snow. I have videos showing those 5 days I took to get there, trying to wait it out for nice days in Tuk. My patience paid off and got 2 cold but beautiful days there. It was supposed to rain again the day I left.
      Anything before or after that period will most likely be cold and possibly wet, which makes for some really dirty driving with a very bumpy road.
      Go as soon as you can. With this new road to Tuk, the traffic is increasing greatly every year, and it will take away from the solitude you can feel being out there.
