How to Determine Proper Tire Pressure | Chalk Test

  • ⬇️MAIN TOPIC:
    This video shows you how to determine proper tire pressure using the Chalk Test. If you put larger tires on your Jeep, you should use the chalk test to determine what tire pressure affords you even tread contact with the road. This would ensure even wear, and that your tires will last as long as possible.

    ⬇️TIP:
    Rotating your tires and checking tread depth with a tread depth meter will ensure that you are getting the longest life out of your tires.

    I did the chalk test long ago, marked a tire before I took my car to the dealer for service (do myself now) for oil change and tire rotation. I get the invoice, says perform tire rotation $29.99, yet the tire I marked (inside wall) with chalk was still on the rear passenger side. I say to the dealer manager “are you sure they did a rotation”, he says “yes”, I say “see that chalk mark there ? I put it there when I dropped the vehicle off this morning”. Then the “Oh, let me make sure they did the rotation, sorry” and took the vehicle back and did the rotation, as I looked through the window between the waiting area and service area. Thieving pricks.

    Great video. While this works for most tires I found that the Milestar Patagonias that I run are very hard to chalk test and get full contact with the ground. Come to find out they are designed to run more on the center of the tire than the full contact of the tire. Helps reduce noise for that design. Anyone using Patagonias or looking at getting them do some extra research and rotate them every 3000 miles.

      @CheaperJeeperTV  Před 3 lety

      On stock wheels on a stock Sahara JL, that would work. If you go to oversized tires, I'd recommend the Chalk Test to ensure proper inflation, so your tire tread wear will last longer. Cheers.

  • @DUNEATV
    @DUNEATV Před 3 lety +1

    Some issues...the tire pressure warning will be on if you run the tires at 30psi. You will also decrease your fuel mileage and it will adversely effect your vehicles handling especially at freeway speeds. Don’t think the trade off is worth running them slightly deflated...

    Should the chalk test be done on warm or cold tires since that will affect pressure PV=nRT

    • @CheaperJeeperTV
      @CheaperJeeperTV  Před 3 lety

      In the morning, when the tires are cold, the air pressure in the 4 tires would be consistent and even. You can use the cool tires to determine which pressure in the tires gives you an even wear patch. The temperature variations in the course of the day may not be significant to worry about. However, as seasonal temperature variations occur, you may want to deflate(summer) or inflate(winter) the tire pressures to maintain the tire pressure you determined during your chalk test to maintain the even wear patch. I hope that helped.

  • @erik13ha
    @erik13ha Před rokem

    I think you might have used the tread depth gauge incorrectly. You definitely should reset it for each measurement. For resetting, I think it's supposed to be fully extended instead setting it to zero. This should reduce the impact that your finger might have pushing on the gauge. Also I have BFG TAKO2s, and I have to inflate them to max pressure to get them to wear evenly.

      Hey TargetOz,
      It’s not a silly thing to mention at all. I guess by the time one drives to a mall parking lot to do the chalk test, the tires would be warmed up anyway. It would have been a good thing to have mentioned in the video though. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Cheers

      @@CheaperJeeperTV Another question if you don’t mind, once you air down or up to get even “chalk wear” how do the tyres go for wear in the long term? Obviously if you run under inflated tires they wear pretty quick but over inflated tires is that just as bad as under inflated for premature wear?

      I’ve only run under inflated a few times off road. Not enough to cause significant wear. I also do a five tire rotation of the tires every 5 000 miles. Even though I have a lot of miles on the Jeep, the wear on my tires seems very good. I still have lots of tread left. I don’t overinflated them as that would cause increased wear along the centre of the tires.

  • @mikesters3532
    @mikesters3532 Před 3 lety

    With the chalk test, it needs to be understood that this is subject to change with outside temps. What was a good chalk test when you completed it, will change if it’s 80 plus degrees outside and sunny and you go for a drive. The tire pressure will increase substantially while driving, ultimately ruining the chalk test. The chalk test is really a baseline.
