    WOW!!!!! This is unbelievable!!!! I was Born in Stony Hollow and remember watching the freight train go by when I was 4 years old. I have lived in this area all my life and never knew the Glenford Dike existed. I cant express it enough, that THIS TRACK SHOULD BE RESTORED FROM KINGSTON TO ARKVILLE!!!! There is no need for anymore walkways in this area (we have enough of them). If this track was restored and it ran dinning cars it would generate much needed jobs and revenue to this area. THIS IS A NO BRAINER!!!

    Just listening to the tracks, they are in better condition than I would have expected. They must have put in decent roadbed back in the day. The rail looks light so I would have expected greater deterioration. Good look on your efforts. Thank you for the post.

    2022: cherish this video. The state and county pulled the tracks west of Basin Road, and CMRR only operates now to Stony Hollow. But most of the track has been rebuilt from Westbrook Lene to Stony Hollow, and it’s a very fine ride. Hope is to extend to Basin Road.

    I have seen the subway and RR cab ride videos, but this was even more enjoyable! I love the rustic areas of that region of New York. Never really been to that part of the country, but rumor has it that New York State is one of America's most beautiful spots! I was concerned that the speed on the overgrowth might have been too much - wasn't sure about logs and large stumps on the rails (underneath the greenery). I assume the conductor and engineer are totally familiar with the territory enough to travel worry-free!
    Great presentation - Thanks!!

    Try getting the trail community to back the idea of restoring train service to the Woodstock Dike so trail riders can leave the car behind and take the train from Kingston Plaza to the ART and back. I'm sure that if CMRR got their support for that idea it could be just what gets Ulster County and NYCDEP to agree to allowing CMRR back on the reservoir lands, even if it's just for that short stretch at West Hurley. A train service from Kingston Plaza to the Ashokan Reservoir, with trains departing every 2 hours daily from 9 to 5 during the busy summer months, would be a huge asset for Ulster County and would only benefit the ART!

    Great stuff here and wish I was closer to help out as I have become a big fan of the speeder running and want to get one just to do this as you did here. The line looks in great shape with some drainage work to be done at the crossing at least. You people have to fight for these rails as it appears no one would object to volunteers working them...but I can assume without knowing the current state of affairs that some want this as a hiking trail...and that wasn't what it was used or built for in the first place....

    Very nice scenic trip, would have loved to have taken it myself. Keep up the good work of restoring the railroad. One of these years we hope to make it back again from North Carolina. Still don't see where the big issue with the trail is, there would be plenty of right of way to save the line and still have the trail. Keep up the fight, many historical lines have already been lost.

    This is beautiful! I would drive from OHIO, to ride these rails! I go up to Cleveland, every September, to ride on the CVSR. Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. They have routine passenger service through the national Park. They saved that railroad! Every September, they invite NKP 765 steam locomotive, from fort Wayne, Indiana. To run steam excursions, for a week. It's awesome!
    With enough people and hard work. Anything is possible. Would be great to see the same thing for your railroad. With regular train service...ticket sales could take care of operations and regular maintenance. As a non profit, you would be surprised, how many donations come in on top of sales! People love railroads, especially steamers! They bring in the crowds! PS...best of luck to you and all volunteers.

    Now that was a great ride! Here in California I have seen tree trimmers' trucks with flanged wheels (even the chipper!) As I watched this I was thinking about all the good work a tree company could do, to help- clear the rails. All they would need is access. The unit I saw was from the ASPLUNDH company, and it had Midwestern license plates. That says to me that they really get around.
    Also, I see the BNSF maintenance trucks also fitted for the rails. (One ton pickups, heavy maintenance trucks, electrical, etc.) Will you be organizing to that degree? I have been an arborist since the 1980s, so these are the kinds of things that came to mind.

      +Michael Dougfir There are some of us who enjoy clearing old roads & trails in the region, with polesaw/chainsaw/brushcutter. Would only require transport to the jobsite if distant from public road. Bit of work required there, and that wee speeder would handle the transport.

      +PascackValleyRailfan The ROW is intact, with some undermining washouts, up to where the Boiceville Trestle was wiped out by Hurricane Sandy. There has been a fair amount of "mowing the lawn" by the CMRR to keep the track passable for work equipment. A lot of the rail and ties in this segment was replaced by Penn Central (or Conrail) before it was placed out of service. The line was never abandoned.

    • @harrisonbalduf3290
      @harrisonbalduf3290 Před 8 lety

      No it does not. It continues on for another 5 miles to Shokan, and then an additional 5 miles on to the site of a trestle which washed out in Hurricane Irene. The trestle's restoration is covered by the FEMA funds.

    • @harrisonbalduf3290
      @harrisonbalduf3290 Před 8 lety

      Actually, the only thing that might be obstructing that track when the video was taken was vegetation now that I think about it. There are additional videos covering MP 11 to 16.3 (Glenford to Shokan) and MP 16.4 to MP 21.3 (Shokan to Boiceville Trestle).
      The .1 mile gap was a crane, caboose and flat car since moved eastward down the line.
