One of the best written characters in any game I’ve played. He was a villain but for the right reasons. Every vile act he comm he did for his people. No matter how vile or how ruthless he was in the end it was all for the land he loved and the people in it. Even if he had to become a monster his people despised he would become that monster if it was for them. He truly had the blood of a lion run in his veins and the will of unbreakable iron. I never been so conflicted on how I felt about a character. In the Libryl arc he is mentioned as this menace. In the Crossbell arc he appears as larger than life itself. A behemoth of a man. A unstoppable force. And in Erebonia he is flushed put entire. The true personification of a necessary evil. He was willing to make himself that evil. Even his greatest opposition in their final moments they do not address him as Chancellor nor his Excellency. They address him as “your Majesty”. I honestly am gonna miss him. He was foreshadowed and hyped up for so long I do not know how President Gramhart is gonna live up to him remotely. Just an awesome character. Truly.

Reminds me a lot of (Persona 5 Royal spoilers)
Takuto Maruki (who I made my profile match, at least for now). He's not evil, but he's your opposition. He wants to create a perfect world, where everyone would be happy. An ideal world.
The phantom thieves (you play as) like this idea, but want a world they make for themselves. The real world. The whole point of the game is destroying the corruption within the higher-ups in society, whether it be their pervert teacher, an artist who steals work, or wannabe Jeff Bezos. But Maruki is different, he's not corrupt, he's far from it. The game gives you an option to give in, triggering the "bad" ending.
His theme is called Ideal and the Real, and the bad ending has a remix of this theme over the credits.

I didn't appreciate this theme as much before, but this is actually an awesome theme that suits Osborne incredibly well. The surface level of the track sounds very composed/calm compared to other boss themes, where in those tracks, it is made to sound very grandiose and even overwhelming at times. On the other hand, this theme doesn't feel like it has those moments, even the chorus/climax never feels like it goes beyond, sometimes even slowing down. However, lingering fierceness is present throughout the entire track, as if a flame is burning ferociously without ever faltering. Osborne is an intelligent and authoritative leader that is known for his cunning and strategies, but even below all that, he is an extremely strong person with such an indomitable will that he was able to completely resist Ishmelga's curse to the very end, despite it being right over his shoulder.

And besides, we don't even know the power of the Grandmaster or even if she could hope to measure up to Osborne. Keep in mind what McBurn said when he first saw Ishmelga: "I guess there is something out there that can utterly overpower me." McBurn wouldn't have said that if the Grandmaster too could defeat him in a fight.

But the Anguises will make the wishes of the Grand Master come true, which is what Vita and Maribelle where aimming to do. Just on different sides and ways, plus our beautiful Grand Master is the biggedt mystery in all of Zemuria. She is older than both the Lion Heart Emperor and the Steel Maiden combine. Her knowledge and wisdom knows no bounds. And all of which that has happen is all in her plan. She allowed everything to go the way it did because she saw it to be the benefit of her plan. (Including the betrayal of the enforcers.)
I cannot defend the Grand Master and her power, is she strong enough to completely annihilate the Steel Septerrion? Who knows, but she is obtaining and breaking each Septerrion that exist. And the power that is the Aerol which can grant wishes may be enough to wipe the floor with the other Septerrions.
Lets also not forget that even without the black work shop Ourobors still has plenty of brains to build powerful weapons. Professor Norvartis and possibly Professor Epstine himself. If Mcburn full power is enough to go against Rean in full power+Valimar with all Knights absorb. I say he has a fair shot against Ishmelga, and remember Ouroboroa has plenty of other weapons to combat Ishmelga as well.
There is just so many more unknowns about Ourobors and what exactly they can do. I personally M waiting on Enforcer 3 and Anguis 4? (Sharron mentioned that two of her Assasin buddies got recruited as a Anguise and another as a fellow Enforcer.)

*Could* the Grandmaster end up being more powerful? Yeah. Hell, Gilbert could end up being stronger than Osborne and we just don't know yet. Anything could happen if the writers want it.
But no, for now you can't be sure that the Grandmaster could handle Osborne in battle. There's no way of knowing up to the date i'm uploading this comment.

Osborne's plan was to go along with Ishmelga's wish to conduct reverie till the very last moment where he'd eventually betray it and probably commit seppuku like rean does in the normal ending. There's a reason he's explicitly shown to start the final reverie prematurely - and that's precisely because he did NOT wish for maximum destruction and chaos, all he wanted was a chance to fuck up ishmelga. There's no way to really fight against him UNTIL you finish off the reveries and most of the things that happen in the game are unavoidable. It is also arguable he went to annex the regions like he did to prevent most of those from getting the same treatment as Hamel.
So no, a very misunderstood character imo. He did not desire destruction but was kinda forced to take up that path because of the curse. And I do not believe he was under the influence of the curse, he was probably in control the entire time. Just didn't let ishmelga know that is how it was.

Although then again, maybe it'd make it sound too silly, and I feel like I've heard the clang behind the percussion in some CS song before which only adds to the idea that this is more appropriate (it's that kind of subtle near imperceptible (to my ear anyway) clang).
EDIT: I realised that we weren't talking about the same thing, but I still wanted to make this point: I was listening to another song and I was hearing the clang as well, I realised that it's present in the 'The Final Choice' where the leitmotiff originated and it's also present in leitmotiff usages of that signature song such as in the Heimdallr theme from CS1 and it's generally much louder but it still makes me think of a train.

  • @pondrthis1

All these comments about how Osborne was so clever seem to be missing the point. He just threw together everyone strong he could find, and fate/Ouroboros threw him the Argent Awakener as a freebie. The fact that Teo Schwarzer raised Rean to be an amazing leader and a selfless individual, able to unite the country/Bracers/Church behind him and Valimar, had nothing to do with Osborne. The fact that the Auric Awakener was a dedicated genius was just a lucky find on Osborne's part, initiated by that Awakener. He did groom the Vermillion Awakener, but that didn't pan out very well in the long run as he was relatively weak, and the Palatinate Awakener was just hired with mira.
He surely would have done better with Cassius Bright as an Awakener, or even Sara Valestein, than Rean. (A Dominion would have been amazing, but the church probably has ways to break Divine Knight pacts and seal them away again.) And if the Rivalries took any longer than they did, his timing of Operation Jormungand could have led to the true start of the World War. It was riskier than it needed to be.
Fittingly, Ishmelga, the stewing hate of humanity, was doomed the moment St. Lianne fell in love with Dreichels. An immortal awakener of such might would have _eventually_ ended Ishmelga, without fail.

    • @cipher-one
      @cipher-one Před rokem +10

You're missing the entire point if you somehow think that someone else could have taken Rean's place. The reality of the situation is that no one could. One half of Ishmelga went into Osborne and the other half went into Rean. To kill Ishmelga, you'd need to unite both halves in addition to combining the power of all seven Divine Knights as it's during said fusion where Ishmelga himself is at his most vulnerable along with his Awakener. One way or another, Rean was gonna get involved and all Osborne could do was pray he became strong enough when the day comes as he at least knew that he could count on Teo to raise him right.
Also, Sara is a no go because she's not an Awakener candidate whereas Rean is. DKs are very picky when it comes to who pilots them, as Sara has been teaching at Thors for a few years and visited the Old Schoolhouse multiple times but not once did Valimar's trial open up to her or anyone else for that matter. Divine Knight trial grounds also only appear within Erebonia's territory, so Cassius can't really be brought in as he's from Liberl and essentially Persona Non Grata in Erebonia outside of special circumstances. Lianne also couldn't do shit against Ishmelga either. The most she could do was follow Osborne's plan to eliminate Ishmelga by using Ouroboros' own plans for themselves.
To begin with, it's also very unlikely that Cassius and Sara would even agree to Osborne's plans because of how morally questionable some of his actions are. His plan to eliminate Ishmelga involved hurting a lot of people. As Bracers, that's something they would have been wholeheartedly against. Sara by herself wasn't even a known Bracer until fairly recently either. She only gained her fame as an A-rank during the events of Sky when Cassius went to Erebonia to assist the guild there during the Jester's incident.

Nothing against Michael Sorich, but he made Osborne sound too raspy. If Osborne was gonna be recast, I wish he was played by Richard Epcar. Because what made Osborne memorable, aside from his personality and goal to end the curse by playing 5D chess, but how deep his voice was. He always had this Darth Vader like presence to him, and his voice in Cold Steel 1-3 helped reflect his intimidating and charismatic nature.
