The biggest problem with DCS combined arms at the moment is that ground units use health bars. They don't have internal or external systems simulated. It's pretty gamey and not very simmy atm. I do believe ED is working on this though as it's relevant in A2G as well.

The real dream in DCS is ARMA 3 style missions but with DCS aircraft, the tank games vehicles (not just tanks but APCs, MRAPs, MATVs, etc), and infantry. How cool would it be if you did an airport assault style mission in DCS with aircraft handling targets, armored vehicles rolling in, and then infantry clearing buildings and securing the objective (inside and outside). Anyone gets hurt you have CASEVAC birds on standby. I know some of this is already possible in DCS but they can greatly expand on it with more fidelity.

Seconding the GHPC recommendation-It's super fun, you owe it to yourself to check it out if you like tanks at all.
Yeah I feel like the potential of Combined Arms is really underappreciated, but first DCS needs to take a major leap in the sophistication of its ground units-I've been playing DCS since 2010 back when it was literally just called "DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark," being blown away by the idea they were making a SECOND aircraft one day, and as far as I can tell the way the ground units work is unchanged from those days (at the very least, and probably from LOMAC before that).
CAS is such a huge part of DCS that making the ground units of both sides feel much more intelligent, reactive, cooperative, and alive without the totalizing need for mission design or RTS micromanagement could really kick the experience to the next level. Infantry especially need their own new simulation mechanics to let them be more than decoration to make it look like your mission has people in it. I'm sure there's a clever way to implement this without breaking legacy missions & campaigns.

Really appreciate this explanation and take on one of the more divisive modules in DCS. I think CA is a great addition to DCS and would like to see it updated. If there's a question of dividing limited dev resources though, I think I would favor focusing on dynamic campaign and performance improvements before putting effort towards CA.
I wouldn't mind seeing CA get some love before another module gets introduced though. We've got plenty new aircraft on the way that are probably months to years from release, so I'd rather see CA get attention than another new module announcement. Just my two cents.

Updating combined arms to even the ARMA level would be awesome and would open the door for ground vehicle modules. With the advent of AI for DCS, there is no reason not to have armor modules. Especially when the Comander Ai comes along with the dynamic campaign. I for one would pay full model price for an M1 Abrams, or a Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Having all the other tanks with turret, tracks, and engine that can be individually knocked out would be sweet. It would also make attacking tanks a better experience from the air.

Combined arms is great, but the real problem is it brings servers to a grinding halt, to the point where you can get banned for taking control of a ground unit. We have our own dynamic pvp campaign. We use CA for all the ground moves and construction sites like FOB, antenas etc, sam placements, helicopter logistics, capture and control of zones. It's the most important module and it's a shame it's in a so bad underdeveloped state. The AI pathfinding is horrible and the UI is very cumbersome but it gives us a dynamic scenario where you need to scout using sensors to see what the other team is doing.

A module that holds a ton of potential if they had the manpower and will to put time into further developping it. I am a true believer that Combined Arms could change for the much better the future of DCS if like i said it was developped further. I do love my DCS for the simulation of flying, but i also do love every now and then to control a vehicle and go out on a mission while the war continues, when combined with multiplayer, you can litteraly call in airstrikes with laser pointers etc, the feeling you get getting on coms with whatever CAS aircraft around and guiding him on a target you have visual on and seeing the target being bombed from the dude you communicated with is extremely satisfying.
Combined Arms clearly has no need to go too much into the details of vehicles, especially the interior, i know a bunch of people would love that, but if we want to stay realistic on a scale of development time, the best compromise would be to only model some sort of proper sights for gunner and keep the usage of the vehicle like it already is, as in, either driving from driver view, from gunner view or 3rd person.
More could be done but i'm not gonna mention everything here, either way, DCS would benefit a lot from really insentavising players to use the module more often and create a good cooperation between air and land units.

  • @ChickentNug
    @ChickentNug Před rokem +1

If DCS would pay the GHPC or Steel Beasts devs to make a fully in-depth combined arms, it would be amazing. I understand that in-depth vehicles could cause performance issues for aircraft, but I think it could be pretty easy to minimize. If you just show aircraft low-quality models to represent where combined arms assets are located, it shouldn't affect other players at all, right? As long as all of that rendering is client side and only done by the players controlling the vehicles it shouldn't be a problem.
I'm sure performance for combined arms players themselves might not be great, but you can do the same thing with aircraft and just lower the quality of stuff going on above ground. All they need are to use the radar and stuff anyway for air defences, they don't need to be able to see pretty airplane models lol
I think high fidelity ground vehicle models with clickable interiors would do extremely well and would bring a lot of tank nerds to DCS. People already spend like $80 on shitty premium warthunder tanks that have almost no realism to them and I know for sure that more realistic models in DCS would do extremely well and they could charge full price for them. The workload would be pretty low for ED if they contracted other dev teams to work with them on this and it would add an entire other side to DCS

As a guy that often plays the role of either JTAC, Ground Force Commander or have to juggle both jobs at once it is painful how bad the "RTS" portion of the module is despite it's humongous potential. It is pretty much unplayable, at most a tech demo level to be honest. If not for the joy of pilots able to interact with a live JTAC or JTACs able to interact with live GFC and support a live ground battle instead of some simple AI prompts it would be nothing but a chore.

I regret money spent on CA. If you care about ground armored combat, you get SB. There's simply no match. GHPC is a bit arkadey, but can be fun.

I always find it interesting when people compare GHPC and DCS. GHPC is more closely aligned with IL-2 (which, incidentally, has its own tank DLC that is more detailed than GHPC) or Flaming Cliffs 3 in terms of fidelity. The most apt comparison for me would be Steel Beasts Pro - that is the DCS of the tank sim world, with clickable interiors and everything.

I bought Combined Arms back in like 2012 or 2013, something stupidly long ago, and you're saying it has potential in the FUTURE? FFS, this is already a decade into the future. At the rate it is going, it MIGHT be cool 15 years from now. But it is more likely ED will be out of business before then, or will have moved onto their next game that they can milk unfinished modules for, for the next 25 years.

    early days yet lol
The 2 reason i don't have it is not compatible with VR an i only use vr and the fact that literally everybody says its not worth it don't buy it . ..........

DCS has a lot of potential, unfortunately it hasn't made any of it in the last 10 years. It's gotten nicer, yes, but under the hood it's actually rubbish. ED starts everything and finishes nothing. Combined Arms, FA-18, F-16, Super Carrier, the Radarmodel, Flightmodel, Damagemodel, Weaponeffects, AI's, ATC, Dynamic Campaign... only promises but nothing is finished. The list only gets longer with each new module. The community has to build practically all the content, and the simplest idea of improving the editor to support/help the community has not been implemented by ed for over 10 years. I've lost my trust in ED and believe that F4-BMS/Microprose or even Microsoft will pull this off rather than ED.

Good video Andre, no one talks about the great potential that this section of the DCS has... In my opinion, we all like more dog fights, bombing missions; but… why not make this spectacular simulator… “THE ULTIMATE WAR SIMULATOR” ??? I know that the ED guys have a lot of work ahead of them and updates to do and it is logical that they give priority to fighters; but hopefully, watching this video and at least... make the cabins, interiors, of land vehicles a little more "attractive"... "IN THE FUTURE... 🫵🏼😁" Hug mate!
